The problem with slavery is that its too emotional of a subject and people tend to virtue signal alot when their arguments dont hold. Slavery is bad, correct, but not all slavery was American chattel slavery. That image of slavery dominates the understanding of how we see slavery. Most slavery were wet nurses, indentured servants, could buy their way out of slavery, had access to education, and even after being freed, can have healthy relationships with their masters even taking loans and/or being apprenticed by their former masters for a trade etc. We have to look at each form of slavery by itself and be honest in our approaches. Its a throne subject but an important one

Slavery in any form is a terrible thing. We can rationalize it as long we are not the actual victims. Wen should entourage others to comment on different aspects of Islam. If it is true religion it will withstand any test. as far as slavery goes, Islam forbade it in Surah Muhammad (47:4). Prisoners of war were slaved in those days. Islam forbids buying another human being. Islam did abolish slavery. Also it gave a code of war prisoners. Recently nations signed a treaty to regarding POWs. If you read 47:4 in Quran, it dictates the same rules. Only this rule was declared 1500 years ago.

The Essenes were the first organized group in history to reject slavery "all together". If they were connected in any way to the Ebionites, there could be a chance the Ebionites also rejected to either buy or sell slaves, like it is done in the Hadiths. It looks like to me that Essenes and Ebionites possible are by virtue the most by ideal form of religion ever, being the first ones to condemn slavery, even before the 18/19th century.

In his last sermon on mount Arafat, and before he died, prophet Muhammad gathered all the Muslims, at that time and asked Muslims to treat every human being equally.
He said: “All mankind is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also, a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves.
Prophet Muhammad’s sermon was the final ultimate word on the topic and identified that ALL MANKIND are equal and that inequality is morally wrong.

sometimes people today look at the past with a view of the day. the issue of slavery in the past is a necessity created by humans. Therefore, God sent a prophet to change it slowly with the rules adapted to the times. the prophets certainly acted on God's orders, what was not ordained by God would not be conveyed to the people. that is why at the time of Jesus PBUH / Prophet Isa (as), the Bible did not condemn slavery strongly. then when the Qur'an was revealed, Allah SWT regulated what had not been regulated, canceled and perfected the moral and legal rules when Isa (as) was sent because there was no more prophet after the prophet Muhammad. The Qur'an is the legal and moral foundation for the abolition of slavery.🙏

At one point, the author mentions that the Prophet ﷺ had fifteen slaves. In a rebuttal of that claim, I present Surah Ahzaab, Ayat 28 and its explanation below:
(33:28) O Prophet, tell your wives: “If you seek the world and its embellishments, then come and I will make some provision for you and release you in an honorable way.
(33:29) But if you seek Allah and His Messenger and the Abode of the Hereafter, then surely Allah has prepared a great reward for those of you who do good.”
One of these incidents is reported from Sayyidna Jabir ؓ and appears in the Sahih of Muslim and elsewhere as well. It is said there that the blessed wives got together and asked the Holy Prophet ﷺ that their sustenance allowance should be increased. Abu Hayyan explains it in Tafsir al-Bahr ul-Muhit by saying that the victories of Banu Nadir and Banu Quraizah after the battle of al-Ahzab coupled with the distribution of spoils had generated a certain improved economic wellbeing among common Muslims. At that time, the blessed wives thought the Holy Prophet ﷺ would have also set aside a share for himself in the spoils. Therefore, they appealed to him jointly saying, "ya RasulAllah, the wives of Cyrus and Caesar are laden with all sorts of valuable ornaments and dresses and have maids appointed to serve them while you see how hungry and ill-clad we are. Therefore, some liberal treatment in our case seems to be in order now."
When the Holy Prophet ﷺ heard this demand from the blessed wives that they should be treated at par with the life styles of kings and the worldly-wise rich, he was grieved about how much they had missed to appreciate the worth and value of living in the home of a prophet of Allah. On their part, the blessed wives never thought that their submission would cause pain to him. It was simply because of the wellbeing of common Muslims around them that they had also thought of the same for themselves. Abu Hayyan says that the description of this incident after the battle of al-Ahzab also supports the likelihood that this very demand of the wives became the cause of the choice of divorce given to them. According to some Hadith narratives, following the event of having a honey drink while at the home of Sayyidah Zainab ؓ which will appear in detail later under the commentary on Surah At-Tahrim, 66:1-5, in Ma’ ariful-Qur'an, Volume VIII- a situation created by the mutual sense of importance among the blessed wives became the cause of this choice of divorce. If both of these happened close in time to each other, then, it is also not remote to believe that they both could be the cause. But, the words of the Verse of Choice (1) are more supportive of the understanding that some financial demand had become its cause - for it was said in this verse: إِن كُنتُنَّ تُرِ‌دْنَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا وَزِينَتَهَا (If you intend (to have the pleasure of worldly life and its charm - 28).
With this knowledge, why would one think or infer that Prophet ﷺ would own slaves?

Allah allowed slavery at some level but treat slaves with respect and humanity, that happened to Bilal MAPWH, which he was slave but excel at the end of his life he was a scholar and governor in Damascus, Islam allowed the freedom a choice for slaves protect their right the best part slaves in Islam can pay for their own freedom and thier owner were encourage to free slaves with love. Islam is very practical religion Islam, Islam are not shameful about slave , instead embrace them with greatness & kindness. Rasul allah himself had slaves , treat them with dignity and give them choice & finally freed them

The Qur'an considers emancipation of a slave to be a highly meritorious deed, or as a condition of repentance for many sins. The Qur'an and Hadith contain numerous passages supporting this view e.g. Q90;13. In chapter 2 , verse 177, God says most emphatically:
    Surah Al-Baqara, Verse 177:
It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards the East and the West, but righteousness is this that one should believe in Allah and the last day and the angels and the Book and the prophets, and give away wealth out of love for Him to the near of kin and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and the beggars and for (the emancipation of) the captives, and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate; and the performers of their promise when they make a promise, and the patient in distress and affliction and in time of conflicts -- these are they who are true (to themselves) and these are they who guard (against evil).
    via iQuran
Muhammad encouraged manumission of slaves, even if one had to purchase them first. Traditional biographies of Muhammad give many examples where Muhammad's companions, at his direction, freed slaves in abundance. Abul Ala Maududi reports that Muhammad freed as many as 63 slaves. Meer Ismail, a medieval historian, writes in Buloogh al Muram that his household and friends freed 39,237 slaves.
It was a practice and tradition of Muhammad to release from captivity those females who would face the risk of being disgraced or humiliated as a result of being held as captives or slaves, and those who came from respected backgrounds that were known for their philanthropic contributions to the general masses, regardless if their charitable deeds benefited Muslims or non-Muslims.

Morals get extrapolated from our limited understandings, we can't infer morality through nature or the observation of phenomena. Brown was being a pseudo intellectual, in some other video he made about Slavery. Saying slavery is an absolute moral evil, by itself. Can't see that being true. Islam puts limits on slavery, though. Better off freeing slaves. And if Muhammad owned slaves, then that's tricky. Since it would make owning slaves Sunnah, and most likely would validate it . Under Islamic law. So it's very paradoxical to think about. Most Muslims don't agree with Slavery I think, hopefully.

Subhana Rabbi al A'laa. Slavery predates Qu'ran, Bible and Torah. The Qu'ran regulated slavery and by far encouraged to release them. The legal status of a slave is not equal to western ideas of slavery. How they are treated is far different than what we know of slavery by Europeans.
Slavery, Now can only come about in an islamic sense is through War. With regards to war, we do not pursue this course initially, we enter war when there is no other logical choice.

Why don't we speak about slavery in Mauritania , resurrected slavery in Libya ; the racialization of slavery in Islam , like in the slavery in the west. The problem is, we can defend the Quran and Hadith but what muslims practiced is far from what the Quran and Hadith suggest. You will find more brown and black people , than any other group Enslaved in many Islamic civilizations and subtle justification for it in many accepted books by Islamic scholars. I think Johnathan Brown book and speeches have great points but what muslims practiced and still practice became a lot like what Europeans practiced. This must be exposed and dealt with not ignored or glossed over. May Allah defend the oppress. May we do better.

Interesting topic. This is example of how Quran deals with issues in the society tactfully depending on the severity of the problem. In the case of slavery, there’s one direction i.e. towards their freedom.
It is interesting also to note how Quran gradually prohibits drinking of Wine/Qamar which was rooted in the society through 4 separate verses.
Verses on prohibition of killing of infants (pagan practice) & Aurat in the Quran are different as they are for immediate implementation.
We have to remember that the pagan arab (Jahilliah) was chosen as the place for our last prophet not by chance but on purpose.

    Just wanted to add something.
Slavery is by defenition the owning of another person and treating him in an inferior manner which includes torturing, abusing, beating, etc.
When we look at what Islam permits about having a slave or a servant:
First, no one is allowed to hit his slave by any means and if he did that deliberately or by mistake then he should free that slave.
    (Sahih Muslim 1657)
Second, it is prohibited to call your slave by "My slave" instead you must call him "My son", "My boy" etc.
    (Sahih bukari 2552)
Third, if you have a slave you must feed him from what you eat and dress him from what you wear and not bear him something that he hates and don't overwhelm him by things he can't do and you should help him if he's overwhelmed
    (Sunan Ibin majah 3690)
Fourth, as mentioned in the video, Islam always encourages people to free thier slaves there's not a single verse that encourages having slaves. The propeht freed many slaves and so did his companians.
We can say that the relationship between a man and his slave in Islam is the same as a boss and his employee, he can't hit him, he can't call him names, he must help him etc.
(Surah Al Nisaa 36) , clearly states that you must treat your slave by the best manners.
There are many other hadiths in which Gabriel told the propeht to tell his nation to treat the slaves in the best manner.

I think that there is a hige misunderstanding of the coted verses. First of all there is a confusion in defining slavery which is definef in the Coran as. عبدا مملوكا for male and امة for females. There os also another word for people captured in war اسير in arabic. But the problem became more complicated for ملك يمين which has many meaning. according to Mohamed Chehrour, this word has many meaning but in any casw means slavery. It means in some cases a relashionship between man and women which is a marriage but without any financial responsabilities and the other meaning is for a person working for somone (called employee in our days). So be careful to this word. If you are interested I can give you more detail about this subject l.

What do you mean that there is a universal consensus that slavery is not to be practiced today? It can't be practiced because there is no real Islamic state but if there is then no one can say that slavery can't be done and if a consensus happened then it's worthless since that doesn't count as an ijmaa, an ijmaa only counts when no scholars before this generation opposed the opinion that got a consensus on(a dead scholar's opinion isn't dead). Saying it isn't to be done is just really conceding to western wants and is like making haram what *Allah* has made halal for us. Also jonathon brown isn't the best to trust on such controversial issues as his mindset is affected to a very high degree by the west. He made many shocking remarks like one about supporting gays' right to gay-marry. He also showed things like nationalism(or patriotism) to, of all countries, america. There are other problems with him so he isn't to be trusted on these things.

The way Islam dealt with slavery is, in my opinion, a sound evidence of the divinity of this religion. Islam came in a time where slavery was so deeply rooted in the social and economic construct of that world that any abrupt prohibition of that phenomenon would literally demolish those constructs. In a world where nearly half the population was enslaved, a mass freeing of slaves would have created a massive crisis as hundreds of thousands of individuals who relied on their masters for food and shelter will suddenly find themselves having to start from scratch with no one to support them. Islam made sure to encourage the gradual draining of sources feeding slavery by means you have already mentioned in your video. There’s also the psychological aspect of being born into slavery and how some slaves would literally rather spend their lives enslaved if given the choice. So Islam made sure to free the minds before the bodies, in a way. A comparison between the Islamic experience and the American one in freeing slaves carried by Mohamed Qutb in his book "Suspicions About Islam" may be quite interesting in relation to the matter.

He was addressing Amr ibn Al ‘Aas (Umar’s governor over Egypt) over a Coptic Egyptian who traveled to Medina and complained that Amr's son lost in horse race to the Egyptian but instead claimed he won and procedded to beat the Egyptian saying he was the son of nobles.
So Umar sent for Amr and his son Mohammed. When they arrived in Medina, he held a short trial to ensure the accusation was true. When it was confirmed, Umar then handed the Egyptian his staff and told him: Beat the son of nobles (Amr's son) and he did.

And a god that allows it should be questioned. These video is justifying slavery which is disgusting. If islam discouraged slavery why did the prophet had slaves? Why did the muslims enslave millions of people in their conquests? Their african slave trade has been proven to be as big or even bigger to that of the europeans. Islam never prohibited it. In many ways it is still practiced today in some muslim places. The logical explanation is that the holy books, as any other holy book, were writen by people, just people, thus explaining why they allowed slavery, had misoginistic views, referred to killing and conquering... The illogical answer and the one that is the hardest to fit in is the one that says it is a loving gods word. How could that god allow men to be deprived of all freedom and subjected to other men?

You can imagine if a verse came down that said it is prohibited completely right there and then. Islam being new to the people, it would have been hard for people to give up something they were so accustomed to as also other gradual prohibitions such as alcohol were done in the same manner.

    "He is free," she replied.
"You are right," retorted Musa al-Kadhim, "if he was a servant, he would fear his Lord."
The slave girl came into the house while Bishr was at the wine table, so he asked her: "What delayed you?" She gave him an account of what took place between her and the Imam. It is said that Bishr quickly jumped to his feet and headed to the door barefooted but the pious man had already left. He left in pursuit of the man and when he finally caught up with him asked him to repeat his words and he obliged. Bishr was so taken aback by his words that he fell to the ground and began to cry. "No I am a slave, I am a slave." From then onwards he would walk without shoes and people began calling him Bishr al-Haafi (The bare footed one). But Islam shut the door on all types and the only way for slavery is for the prisoners of war,
. Meaning if there was Jihad between you and an enemy.
This means the way of slavery that was practiced by Arabs until recently is not Islamically acceptable. My grandfathers would capture free slaves from Africa and bring them here to Qatar.
    Look at this hadith
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Allah says, 'I will be against three persons on the Day of Resurrection: -1. One who makes a covenant in My Name, but he proves treacherous. -2. Muhammad did try to do something against slavery. He did this by example of his conduct. First, he took Said ibn Harits, a slave in his and Khadija's house, to be his son. Said ibn Harits was renamed as Said ibn Muhammad. But this was revoked when Zainab bint Jash's incident happened. Said divorced Zainab. Muhammad got a lot of critiques for marrying his own son's ex wife. A revelation was given by Allah that it is halal, because Said is not tied to Muhammad by blood. Since then, adoption becomes haram in Islam. Another conduct is regarding Bilal ibn Rabbah. After being tortured by his master, Muhammad made him a free man, even raising him higher into the reader of Adzan. The Arabs mocked this, saying, "There, the crow caws again."

The problem with slavery is that it is mostly emotional, not judicial.
I think when people imagine a "slave", they imagine a black man or a black woman, and imagine the owner to be a white man.
This poses a great problem, that triggers emotions, before rational thinking.
    You see
Slavery existed in the past and still exist until today in some african countries, so why isn't that problematic ?
It is because when africans enslave africans, or when arabs enslave arabs, or when whites enslave whites, it is not a big of deal, because the inter-race/ethnicity slavery is based on , wealth, power, ..., So it is based on something temporary, something that everyone regardless of race, religion, age, can be in, or get out of.
The problem on the other hand of american slavery, which single handedly refined what slavery is, is this :
    1. It is based on race.
    2. The enslaved race is not enslaved because it is poor, or weak, it is because it is not human.
    3. There was only one race enslaved.
These three reasons are what made slavery an emotional more than a judicial problem.
If we take the emotions out, and ask ourselves, who defines what is moral and what isn't, slavery can be solved like any other problem.
    e.g.
Is it moral to jail people for using drugs ?
Since one can abort a child, can they also sell their organs, to better one's life and probably other's too ?

There is a case to be made that the earliest Muslim community were close to having freed if not all, very nearly all of their slaves. And that it was the absorption by conquest of Persia and the Byzantine Levant, as well as Egypt, where the subject people who entered Islam as existing slave owners posed the dilemma of what to do with their slaves to the religious authorities (Ulema). History records the scholars of law devised an entire corpus dedicated to normalising the practice (including the extension of the one half rule to every type of punishment concerning errant slaves and even, bizarrely, divorce (which requires 3 utterances for non-slaves, but 1.5 utterances in the case of slaves(!) I kid you not). However, as per the precedence established in the Qur'an and Hadith, abolishing the practice should have been the intent of the law, rather than its perpetuation.

As far as i remember, slavery is forbidden in Islam. Usually slaves are called "servants" and they have a lot of rights such as suing their owner in case of harming them. These servants are taken in only one condition, which is war between 2 nations "not groups" (other than that it's completely forbidden). The reason why it was allowed in wars, because in the past soldiers's families used to go to battlefield with the army, and so that they won't be left to die with no food or shelter after losing the battle, they were taken by the commanders of the winning army. According to some scholars it was another way to introduce them to Islam, because most of the servants through the Islamic history have converted to Islam willingly, while the rest continued practicing their own religions, and some of them became army leaders, scholars, queens and even leader of an entire kingdom...etc

Thanks for your interesting topic. I would like to add that Slaves ruled Egypt and most of the Islamic nations for around three hundred years. They managed to defeat the Mongolian army of Genghis Khan's descendants and save the whole world from their cruelty. Another important point to mention is that once a slave woman gives birth to a baby, she is free, and the baby is recognized as his son/ daughter, which never happened in recent America.

The frequency with which you make videos on new books suggests you’ve either read a lot of these in an earlier time, or you read quite quickly, or both. We are slave to something or someone the problem is either we aware or ignorance about it. Sometimes we stuck to debt that we work like a slave to pay it. Sometimes we tied to the company law that ignore our rights and etc. Modern slavery is not a new thing. That why al quran and hadith still relevant to this day for this kind of issues.

The texts of Islam took a strong stance against slavery . It says in a hadeeth qudsi: “Allaah, may He be exalted, said: ‘There are three whose opponent I will be on the Day of Resurrection, and whomever I oppose, I will defeat … A man who sold a free man and consumed his price.’” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (2227).
Islam changed the way in which slavery was dealt with; it created many new ways of liberating slaves, blocked many ways of enslaving people, and established guidelines which blocked these means.
Capture of prisoners during war was the most common way of acquiring slaves. Prisoners would inevitably be captured during any war, and the prevalent custom at that time was that prisoners had no protection or rights; they would either be killed or enslaved. But Islam brought two more options: unconditional release or ransom. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “Thereafter (is the time) eit This is a brief summary of some of the principles of dealing with slaves in a just and kind manner:
1 - Guaranteeing them food and clothing like that of their masters.
It was narrated that Abu Dharr (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “They are your brothers whom Allaah has put under your authority, so if Allaah has put a person’s brother under his authority, let him feed him from what he eats and clothe him from what he wears, and let him not overburden him with work, and if he does overburden him with work, then let him help him.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (6050).
    2 - Preserving their dignity
It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: I heard Abu’l-Qaasim (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “Whoever accuses his slave when he is innocent of what he says will be flogged on the Day of Resurrection, unless he is as he said.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (6858).
Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) manumitted a slave of his, then he picked up a stick or something from the ground and said: There is no more reward in it than the equivalent of this, but I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “Whoever slaps his slave or beats him, his expiation is to manumit him.” Narrated by Muslim (1657).
3 - Being fair towards slaves and treating them kindly
It was narrated that ‘Uthmaan ibn ‘Affaan tweaked the ear of a slave of his when he did something wrong, then he said to him after that: Come and tweak my ear in retaliation. The slave refused but he insisted, so he started to tweak it slightly, and he said to him: Do it strongly, for I cannot bear the punishment on the Day of Resurrection. The slave said: Like that, O my master? The Day that you fear I fear also.
When ‘Abd al-Rahmaan ibn ‘Awf (may Allaah be pleased with him) walked among his slaves, no one could tell him apart from them, because he did not walk ahead of them, and he did not wear anything different from what they wore.
and he said to him: Do it strongly, for I cannot bear the punishment on the Day of Resurrection.
If you noticed how they should eat same food , wear Same clothes clothes like their masters.
Thus you can notice that slaves in Islam 1400 years back were treated better than house maids now a days.

A slave under Islamic laws could actually have much more fulfilling life than many people part of the working class in modern capitalist countries. So even from a secular utilitarian perspective, Islam’s views of slavery are NOT evil by any means since they do not inherently cause suffering.

Imagine justifying slavery saying: it says to treat your slaves well. Islam permited slavery and it was widespread in the islamic world, millions were enslaved under muslims. And waht you say has no point, before islam many cultures had done similar regulations regarding slavery, stating the treatment of slaves and who could become one, nothing new. Prisoners of war were fed long ago, mostly if they were important people. And also officers were ransomed long before islam. In yihad killing and enslaving was permited. Stop justifying slavery. I mean just look to what extent you can go to justify your faith, if you can justify slavery im sure you could justify killing, truly dangerousm

I see a beautiful wisdom in how Islam treated the issue of slavery which was widely practiced before its time. If Islam would condemn slavery and all the slaves would have been freed at once during the prophet time, there would have been a large number of jobless; hungry and probably violent young men around, a situation that can explode at any time. Freeing a slave to forgive a master's sin is a gradual way of getting those young men to the working force of a comunity and avoiding the unwanted repercussions of suddenly freeing all the slaves. Thank you for the beautiful video and for bringing those books to our attention.

The Chapter of the Koran you quoted was slightly but profoundly mistranslated.
    Your source translates it as:
„Yet have he had not attempted the steep path“
In the original text it is an imperative not a negation.
GOD orders mankind to fo go the steep path, freeing slaves is an imperative

Slavery was usually a way of dealing with war captives after the fighting was over, partly to prevent them rising up against you and partly to secure a larger army for future battles. Females were rarely sent to battle so they became more useful for acting as a support for combatants should the need arise.

Islam did not start slavery. It inherited it from the Arabian culture of the time. In those days wars were the source of slaves. Prisoners of war were slaved. Children of slaves were also slaves. It became an integral part of the culture and economy. Abolishing it immediately would have posed numerous problems. It would have shaken the economy. Slaves would have to be integrated into society. Their acceptance in their new role of a free person would not have been an easy task. Salves would be in shock and not prepared for this new role either. So to avoid a chaos Islam competed this task in stages. As you mentioned prepared slave owners to treat slaves better. that improved their life style. Gave people incentives to free their slaves. You have mentioned all that. However one thing that you missed was the last and crucial step that Islam took to stop this ugly cycle of slavery. IT CLOSED THE DOOR FROM WHERE SLAVES WERE ACQUIRED. IN SURAH MUHAMMAD 47:4 ALLAH ORDERED MUSLIMS THET "THEY WERE NOT MAKE SLAVES ANY POWS". WHICH PRACTICALLY CLOSED THE DOOR TO SLAVERY. Islam offered about the same status to a POW which nations recently agreed to in Geneva convention. Islam offered it 1500 years ago.
I listen to your blo9g regularly. I think you do a decent job and show no bias. So I thought I should bring this to your knowledge. Also if I get chance, separately, i shall comment on your blog about religion and democracy. I would like to show you that Islam encourages democracy.
