Hiking a piece of town land here in New Hampshire NH i was out looking for lost history. Following the old stone walls i notice that one of them was one side of a road most likely from the 1700s. But the big thing was it had become a beaver dam and this huge pond was now covering the old road that nobody knew about....wow ! so walking the park more i came across the old telephone line system that has been out of service for more than 50 years. Pretty interesting since i had found an old chunk of it last summer while out exploring. All thats left are some cut up telephone poles and the old service road. Following that road i also discovered that it too goes right under this pond ! A very interesting area that shows you so many different layers of time and history.

Dude... most stone walls in NH date not from "colonial times" or "1700's," but from years just before and just after Civil War. The forests and hills were almost entirely denude in the 1/2 half of the 1800's. Somewhere around 80% of NH was "logged off". The cutting went south and west and settlers followed. What was farmed back here needed to be cleared of stone. There was the added need for animal fencing (from cleared stone) when lumber was then used only for more important, value-added items, such as homes.

Then around the late 90’s people from mass and Vermont moved in and started setting up more welfare systems and raising my taxes. It’s only gotten worse I can’t even express my political views freely in concord without getting yelled out. This state is still wonderful but not as nice as it used to be. Where are you doing this all at? At least around those towns? Just super curious. I was born and raised in Mass., there until I was 31, but how I LOVED New Hampshire! I'd go back if we had the means. We're not loving Virginia! Please do be careful out there...stay safe! Thanks for sharing your "adventures" up there "back home". LOTS of history in 3 of 4 states we've lived in, so that's pretty neat. Florida has history, but not like Mass., NH, and Virginia. We're trying to get our grandson interested in it all. That's a cool area your in, but there is nothing really spectacular about a old road that has portions underwater! I live in Pennsylvania & we have many ponds, reservoirs & lakes that have roads that disappear into water, some with remains of towns in them. At least in my state anyway there were many army corp of engineer projects from the late '50s all the way to the early '80s that often involved entire villages & towns forcefully bought out by the government for these projects. The federal government's usual excuse was "flood control management" but in many areas floods never or very, very rarely occurred. The "eminent domain law" is not very loved in Pennsylvania!!! The same thing most likely occurred in your state also. Beautiful scenery though!
(For those who may not know what the "eminent domain law" is, it's when the government comes in & (basically steals your land) offers you what they claim is fair market value for your land or property for some governmental reason...if you decide to resist, good luck, because you can't win, they will eventually just seize your property, evict you (by force if necessary) then give you a reduced pennies on the dollar settlement amount)

@@NotThursday : I hear you & respect what your doing, it is a new discovery for you in your research but I'd be surprised if the road isn't already known to cartographers & on someone's map even if it dates back to colonial times. If it's not already known it was probably just a farmers access trail. Even old logging roads are known & on maps.

You were born in the wrong century Charlie. Is that pond a natural body of water or a man made reservoir. Either way the beavers have done some creative engineering work to increase it's size. One thing that has always surprised me is how many of New Englands ponds/lakes are actually man made. Going back to the 17th and 18th centuries streams were dammed to create farm ponds, mill ponds, recreation, etc. Many other natural ponds have been dammed to increase their area or depth. An aerial view of New England would probably look different prior to the creation of reservoirs.

Im prettifying sure this is a very old low lying field that flooded at some point and the beavers took over. Its walled in on all sides and the road went through it, I bet that was just a small brook at one point in time.

I had watched many of your videos ! I believe in one of them someone found what looked like a smashed lead bullet . I was watching another video from a different UA-cam channel when they came across a similar smashed lead bullet from the Civil War ! They stated that could have been smashed and used as a poker chip ! From what I can gather from your videos the Civil War didn't get that far north . But what if other people used the same method for making a poker chip up there ? You have stated many times the people up there were poor . So to play poker maybe just for fun they used a smashed lead bullet !

I consider myself lucky, I have the Erie Canal and a few other interesting sights in northern Ohio.
But unfortunately our pre revolutionary war history is along Lake Erie and in now development's where the great trail once ran. But as you said. Go look for those little signs that tell you things were not always undeveloped. And you might be surprised at what you find.
    Happy travels!
    Beeps.

Good ol New Hampshire. Love everything about it, the people, towns, nature and it's history. Alot of it I learned from my grandfather and he's still showing me new things. He knows pretty much every back road, old cellar holes and so much more. Wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Not after living here my whole life. LIVE FREE OR DIE!

The stone walls are fascinating! The work that went into lugging those rocks by horse or oxen must have taken months!
Did they use them to section off gardens or livestock?

Yeah NH! There were plenty of roads under water where I grew up. Near old railroad beds, I think the railroad was just built right through wherever the owners wanted, never mind town roads, turning streams into swamps. I’d ride my horse through the woods on trails like this and it was so neat to line them up with old maps after. Cool channel!

It’d be interesting to do a vid on the old College Road that was commissioned by the British colonial governor. It was built in the 1760s and ran from his mansion in Wolfeboro to Hanover.
