Millenials had the problem of being traditionally pop media middle school pilled (i dunno what to call it but its like the mindset of being "totally an adult" at 13 and making your life into a sitcom or other scripted realistic-fictional media) and had the ability to go on the internet sadly
While not the entire reason, a big part of why a lot of new media people at the time went all in on hating is because negative content got clicks/views/whatever metric, and once monetization became a common thing it was off to the races, and turned an already self-feeding process into one that generated money.
While it’s true that a lot of people did hate Tingle for being kinda queer, and that’s shitty of those people, there is another reason to hate Tingle. He charged a SHITLOAD to translate those maps in the original version of Wind Waker. Like, WAY too much, especially for something mandatory to complete the game.

Oh yeah, Tingle's a god damn swindle in Wind Waker! I think he's a funny little man and he has some funny spin offs (that we never got in the west), but the WW version of him is just despicable.
People hated Big because there was all these cool characters and then there was a giant cat who only fishes. His most interesting thing is having a frog bff. And I think he would be slightly creepy to the kids of that current era. So yeah.

Honestly, I would say a lot of Gen 1’s designs have aged like milk. They really could’ve used a redesign, not a major one, just tweak them so they don’t end up looking so out of place, y’know?

Not just them, but like... Nobody has anything good to say about the voice, in any iteration, and that's also the main thing that gets mentioned about the character, with Blue Toad being named Buckenberry coming in a distant third.
I loved toad even back then but the hate for him stretched far beyond mario 1. You can blame plushtubers like SuperMarioLogan for it stretching even farther to the point of making it a punchline to hurt toad in some way same in sprite animations. Feels similar with Tails as well thanks to a certain person behind the Tails abuse videos

Honestly, I’d say it’d come down to personality and tone. Bubsy ended up coming across as unlikable to me because he just kinda had this sorta… fake aura to him? He only existed to chase a trend and aged badly as soon as the puddle dried up. Ironically, I can say the same for those reviewers. I do not like Bubsy and I’m confused as to why people are suddenly acting like the Bubsy games are suddenly decent. They’re a mediocre at best and frustrating at worst set of games that really should’ve stayed in the 2000s, being forgotten alongside all the AVGN clones not dissimilar to them.

Personally, I find the stuff around Raiden hilarious. Kojima saw that people hated him, so he decided to traumatize and mutilate the poor fucker, then rebuild him million dollar man style until people loved him. And it WORKED. This has no right to work as well as it did, but Kojima is also Kojima so who knows.

I never interpreted that the Tingle hate could be implied homophobia. There was a time Nintendo considered bringing "Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland" to more countries. Nintendo sent out a survey to check what the AMERICAN fanbase thought of this game. Of course because of the Tingle hate at the time, those fans did NOT want that game coming here. So now you have extra context why the Tingle DS duology was (mostly) Japan exclusive. It's a combination of many different factors that translated poorly to an American audience. He's got that weird Japanese appearance and humorous mannerisms that westerners don't understand, especially not in the 90s. Then there the context of him being a middle aged man outcast from society who can only relate to children, just kinda hanging out and scouting things from afar. It's not a good look considering the moral panics, particularly around this time. And Wind Waker certainly didn't make it any better with the map quest.
I imagine that the reason there was a lot of hate on the 2000 and early 2010 was because a lot of people wanted to be the next avgn, so they just started cursing without the charm of avgn, that and maybe 911 or something idk lol

I personally don't think the Tingle hatred really picked up until Wind Waker, and I think half of it was because he kinda came off as a lot shadier than his harmless counterpart from Majora's Mask, even ignoring how much you needed to grind rupees to pay to get his charts read; making his relatives work away on his island (one dedicated to himself, no less) in addition to possibly kidnapping a random stranger, dressing him up like Tingle and putting him to work as well. I guess this is why we got the Majora's Mask Tingle in Hyrule Warriors and not the Wind Waker version.
I nominate Krystal as another example. She got benched as a damsel in her debut to everyone's groans but her sweetness and cool mix and match of sci fi and fantasy earned her a following. When she got added to Smash Bros as an assist trophy, the only criticism is that she isn't playable.
I swear, the original N64 version of Star Fox Adventures (Dinosaur Planet if you want to be a nerd) had Krystal's playtime scale much longer than what we got. I played the prologue segment and then never touched the game again cause screw hot furry women in video games, who even needs them when we got one polygon titted Lara Croft to jerk off at.

I have a friend who hates Daisy, mostly just due to the fact that she associates her with some bad personal experiences. Also, Mel herself actually got some stuff wrong about Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels and Super Mario Bros. 2. Namely, the reason Nintendo originally decided against its original release wasn’t because of its difficulty, but rather because of how generally similar it was to the original Super Mario Bros. This concern was due to the fact that the Video Game Crash of 1983 happened predominantly due to loss of interest in the medium due to the lack of variety, so Nintendo took Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic, and, instead of just changing some sprites and text to Mario characters, actually did tweak some other aspects of the game, such as how the character select works.

Heck, when I played SMBtLL, it wasn’t much more difficult than SMB1 outside of a select few sections, but to be fair, despite expectations, SMB1 isn’t the easiest to e games out there.
If I'm not mistaken, Howard Phillips has said on a couple of occasions he didn't approve the game for localization because of its difficulty. Games made for the Famicom Disk Expansion had save functionality, which would have made the difficulty more digestible, like it is in Lost Levels (which also had its difficulty tweaked). However, the NES hadn't released a game with a battery yet, and were unlikely to start with SMB2, so powering off would have meant starting from 1-1 every time. While there are multiple factors including the market crash and the game's similarity to SMB, difficulty did play a major role.
It's also worth noting that Doki Doki Panic was originally conceptualised as a vertical-based platformer, which Miyamoto saw and suggested that they added more Mario-ish design to it to turn it into the game we know now. It was heavily influenced by Mario, and also was made by the same team as the original Mario, so it isn't as dramatic of a change as people claim it to be. Had Nintendo not been approached by Fuji Television it probably would have been released as a Mario game from the very beginning, but who knows.
I do too, even if a lot of game devs don’t know how to make them. Because when they do, it works wonders! Ever played Rayman origins? They got basically 1 & 1/2 water worlds in it all done marvelously!
I like the aesthetics of water levels, but not the mechanics. In a lot of older games, water levels had really annoying controls or air mechanics tied to them. Just look at most water levels in Sonic. For every good water level like Aquarium Park, there's like 4 Labyrinth Zones (across games in general I mean.)
Rob Paulsen actually revealed in a Q&A in 2020 that he didn’t mind voicing Bubsy and that the real role he hated doing was Coconut Fred. I doubt anyone remembers Coconut Fred. If so, good.
I remember Slippy being hated which is crazy cuz Slippy in recent years has become my favorite StarFox character (partially due to a lot of fan works of Slippy) and he's the main reason I want a new StarFox game

Yuji Naka even said the appeal of Sonic is that speed is the reward for good platforming. The boost games ignore that rule which explains why Yuji Naka left.

Ohh! I got a funny little story about that Ocarina of Time owl! I never got to play the game as a kid, so I had to emulate it as an adult. So, I was reading all of the dialogues to get all that sweet lore I missed out on. When I met the owl again in the Lost Woods, he told me how to NOT get looped in the maze. He said, "follow the music". My boyfriend was pretty shook when I told him about this, since he knows the game by heart and just runs past everything pretty effortlessly. Well, there’s a TvTropes article called Americans Hate Tingle. The article is about characters who are popular in the area of the game’s home release nation, but despised elsewhere. Another example would be Hiyoko Saionji from Danganronpa 2, where she’s one of the single most popular characters in the franchise’s native Japan, but heavily, heavily disliked in the West, albeit she does have some defenders even over there.
Well tingle is first and foremost a joke character and sometimes jokes don't really translate well. I certainly think he's funny, but I understand why people wouldnt like him since he's intended to be kinda creepy.
As a Baldi's Basics enjoyer myself, i know there are a lot of characters in that game that people absolutely DESPISE, probably since, due to the nature of the game, most of the other non-Baldi NPCs are made to make your notebook collecting experience harder. BUT by far the most hated character in that game is definitely Playtime, she is one of the characters that forces you to stop what you were doing completely, but i feel people always point to her for being one of the most annoying, is because 1: It takes like a whole 10 seconds to deal with her (If you don't have the scissors) and 2: She is one of the classic characters, which means she was added in the original gamejam version of classic, so she was one of the only actually annoying characters to have to deal with, since the other characters either weren't as prominent in the gameplay, or their mechanic was easily counteractable (Playtime in Baldi's Basics plus isn't that bad when you consider all the other idiots you have to deal with, but those guys just weren't in the first game!) Honestly i get it, she is a pain to deal with, but i honestly kinda love her- she just a silly little goober who just wants to play jumprope, i guess it's fine to hate her in the game, but like her outside the game, that's what i do

Tingle is universally hated, as he is an "okama". In Japan that's a concept that lumps feminine man, crossdressing men, gay and bi men, non-binary males and trans women (yes, not trans men) all together. It's supposed to be a degoratory stereotype with EXACT interpretation of what westerners think of "lesser men". The japanese learned that from westerners on the reformation period, when the emperor obligated everyone to copy the europeans and "the new-worlders". Gamers and anime fans actually move mountains to convince everyone there is nothing wrong with it. Most common justification is that "it's just culture".

As for Whitney, I personally used a female Quagsire that knew Rock Smash. As someone who grew up playing Rabbids Go Home. I loved the Rabbids. First form is called Bubcat. Second form is called Skarlynx. Both are Ground/Flying.
Most of the characters hate come from the unfortunate choices made by the developers in how they implemented game mechanics. So it's not the characters fault really. But though tingle in wind waker is annoying due to how he was implemented. He still deserves the hate because he really is a bad person. He literally kidnapped someone for hard labor and makes them dress like him. His other versions might not be that bad. But wind waker is really more of a villain.

If you ask me, it's easier to scapegoat a character who was in a bad product than complain about a bad product. But as we all know, the issue isn't the characters. It's the writing of the characters. Let's admit it. When a product is bad, so are the characters. And afaik, it's easier to hate on a new character who was written badly in said bad product than to hate the product as a whole. Cause that would also mean hating on the characters we DO love that also suffer from said bad writing. To wit, Scrappy-Doo, while annoying, is the summation of the poor writing during Scooby's time, not because of his gremlin design or annoying voice. But what we aren't aware of is how awful Scooby and Shaggy were during the Scrappy era. And no one wants to hate the duo at all. I've seen many bad/divisive characters people claimed that were reintroduced and were made likable. I can name two: Webby (Ducktales) and Broly (Dragon Ball). While the latter has his fans, he was a divisive figure. And when they were remade, without the need to fundamentally change them, people love those characters.
I know you mentioned characters like Navi and Tingle, but I’m surprised you didn’t mention Fi from Skyward Sword! She’s basically become the “new Navi” in terms of the Zelda tutorial character everyone seems to hate for no reason. To me, she’s even less hatable than Navi. Her design is great, her theme is awesome, and I love the little character arc they give her, with moments of her subtly showing more emotion as the game goes on. Also, she’s the literal spirit of the Master Sword, and that’s just objectively awesome. And that ending scene! God! It made me tear up so bad!
She thankfully was nerfed in the remastered Switch version from constantly giving you tips and tutorials to a feint glow on the master sword indicating she would give you help with a press of a button. So there's that, now for Navi...
I think Fi is liked more w BotW and TotK hammering home her sacrifice, constantly there and helping but not able to reach out for more than moments at a time.

This video itself feels like it's trying to gaslight me with some of these. A good chunk of the Tingle hate came from how ugly he looked and the creepy vibes he gives off in Wind Waker, what with you having to break him out of jail, then finding out that he owns slaves and vengeful idols. Not to say there weren't homo-homeboy haters, just that homophobia wasn't the _sole_ reason for the West's disdain for him. I found his MM incarnation endearing, but his WW incarnation had slightly sinister undertones. I haven't played his Rupeeland spinoffs, but I heard he gets a glow-up. And the Rabbids deserve every bit of hate, considering what happened to Rayman. Canning a whimsical platformer mascot, and what would've been a really interesting game going by the trailers and leaked builds of Rayman 4, in favor of a shallow fotm concept, driven by shareholders and mindless focus groups. The only difference between Rabbids and the generic shooter protagonists of the late 00s is the target demographic. The only silver lining is that Rayman was always shaped by what's currently popular, going from classic cartoon, to dark and mysterious masterpiece, to John Leguizamo braaapp-fest, to silly French webtoon, so Rabbids replacing him ultimately made little difference in the long run.
Agreed, I’d openly say homophobia was absolutely not the sole major reason for the Tingle hate. Another reason was Tingle charging ridiculous prices in WW for his charts, which are mandatory for finishing the game. And there’s eight of them. Which made that part of the game an unbearable slog. Thank god they toned it down quite a bit in HD, but by then, the damage had been done.
The reason why people hated gen 5 pokemon was because in Pokemon B/W, all the pokemon in it were new gen 5 ones, so you couldn't get any older gen Pokemon until endgame.

Yeah. Plus, people forget that Ocarina was kind of the first big name open(ish) world 3d adventure. Nintendo put Navi in with the assumption that kids would boot up the game after school, forget what they had been doing yesterday, and need a hint. It was 1996, online guides weren't as common or accessible, for most kids getting a guide would cost money!
The tingle situation was even more nonsensical because he has two games to his name that didn't get to the us but both of them confirmed that he is straight.
Most of these characters are hated by people because they have annoying voices or annoying mechanics that interrupted your gameplay. It's not hard to understand why they'd be annoyed.

My experience with Big the Cat was honestly so phenomenal. As a kid who grew up on Somecallmejohnny and The Completionist, naturally I hated Big. Because all the cool guys on the internet hated Big. "UGH! HE'S SO LAME AND STUPID! AND I DON'T WANNA FISH IN A SONIC GAME!" Y'know the type. Then, I don't know what caused it, but I woke up with a revelation; "Oh my god. He's just a dopey guy who wants to fish with his frog. He's done nothing wrong (mostly because he's done nothing in general). He is... just. A guy. Trying to vibe." And from that moment onward, Big was my favorite character. Also, I'd like to nominate Axl from Mega Man X for this list. He's in an incredibly similar boat as Silver, being as his debut appearance was a game that was universally terrible all around. However, he has a bomb-ass character design, legitimately interesting backstory (especially by Mega Man standards), and has a distinct role in the Hunter Trio that compliments the battle-weary X and Zero extremely well. Plus his gameplay in Mega Man X8 is great! But for many people, you bring him up and all they wanna talk about is his annoying voice in X7 and how they just wanted to play as X.
I watched the same people you did growing up it seems. But for Big, I personally think that he's better when he's a supporting character. He just doesn't have enough going on his own to make him an interesting protagonist. But playing with him in Heroes is really fun and he's one of the better party members in Chronicles.
Most of these really did just boil down to either homophobia, transphobia, sexism, or not being a generic “badass male guy with guns” character. …or just being a Sonic character in general, remember how some people complained back in the day that Sonic had… friends? Like as in, the series had characters? …why the hell did they want Sonic and Eggman to be the only characters in the franchise?
As someone that grew up watching a lot of ScrewAttack and other random Gamer reviewers back in the day that would make "top 10 worst characters in video games" type videos I feel like they did some form of physic damage to my 11-13 year old brain at the time.
- What dealt a pretty big hit to Tingle's case was the Triforce Chart translations - the total costs were ENORMOUS. This gets alleviated a bit in Wind Waker HD, where Link only needs to get three Triforce Charts. - Ironic how opinions on Luigi, Daisy, Waluigi, Birdo, and Bowser Jr. have changed. (But I'll NEVER get over certain Smash fans that make death threats in Waluigi's "honor".) - In the Vanillite line's defense, they're actually living icicles covered in snow. Shaping them like happy ice cream cones is a stylistic choice that also references the kinds of classic food mascots for, say, old American diners. - I can't help but wonder if Ember's mere presence posed some "threat" to Spyro x Cinder shippers... - Remember all those people who get pissy whenever Baby Mario cries in the Yoshi's Island series? You know, the thing that happens when they get careless and get hit? I shudder to think of their parenting abilities... - At least Whitney gets over her sobbing within, say, a minute. CLAIR, however, demands that you do a whole trial in the dungeon behind Blackthorn City before she thinks to give you her badge! And in Crystal and the remakes, she gets pissy when you pass the elder's trial because she never did! Seriously, Clair is the real b____ here. - If you think about it, Raiden is kinda the Cloud Strife of Metal Gear - prettyboy fair hair, specializes in swordplay, and has boatloads of mental baggage.
The reason people dislike Amy Rose back then was because of her bad personally after SA2. When the Sonic X cartoon came out, she became more obsessive, pushy, threatening, and a bit stalkerish. Then that personally was put into the games.
Resetti: 32:47 Awh. :< I diagree. I LOVE Mr. Resetti. They are extremely funny and make use at poking fun at the player for save scumming. It is an excellent example of the more gruff, and generally meanspirited characters in the early animal crossing games. And I wouldn't trade Resetti's existence for anything else in the world :3

Boy, does this bring me back! Especially with those clips of countdown UA-camrs I used to watch ten years ago. I'd like to believe those guys have moved past the ableism and transphobia they exhibited here (again, this stuff was from over a decade ago), but I don't keep up with them like I used to, so maybe that's wishful thinking. If this video ever gets a follow-up, I think it'd be worth talking about Eliwood from Fire Emblem. He used to be poorly-regarded for similar reasons to Raiden (not as "cool" as fellow protagonists Hector and Lyn, plus it's terribly unmanly to cry when your dad dies right in front of you, as we all know), so I think he'd fit this topic pretty well. That's if there's enough material for a second video in the first place, though. You covered a lot of good ground here already.

Cyberpunk 77 got fucked up by everyone. Even the community rushed its development by screaming about how much they “Want their Keanu senpai right now!” or whatever. And the worst part is, I don’t think the majority of people learned anything from it…
I'll help quickly explain things with why Gen 5 became so despised: At the time when Gen 5 was coming out, a lot of older fans (and people who ditched the series around Gen 2 or 3 who didn't wanna be seen as cringe for liking it by high school bullies/ect) had come back wanting to try out the new games. And because the base game of Black and White were new pokemon only, a lot of people who didn't know any of them (and/or who didn't want to be seen as just fad chasers who only used Gen 1 pokemon knowledge to act like they knew what they were doing/saying) threw a fit because they couldn't just use what they knew/had before at the start. And so they took their frustrations out on the new pokemon because they couldn't only use what they wanted/knew, until it stuck forever. And with this, the kinda linear nature of Black/White and a few other issues at the time, it's what led to Gen 5 being seen at the time as the worst generation ever. After that, every gen ever has had more and more focus on every generation along-side the current/new gen be found in grass or other parts of the game, and an ever larger push of 'genwun' pandering as some like to call it. To the point some wish Game Freak could have done another soft reboot like Gen 5 for a clean slate and get things in order no matter how much people crying they can't have Charizard for the Nth time get upset over it.
Birdo's case is also unusual in that the trans community is divided on whether her recent portrayal (being more of a movie star/singer) is better or her early appearances are too much of a black mark on her legacy. Given Poison from Final Fight used to be based on a *very* dated loophole for the heroes not hitting women before she became more heroic, I'm willing to give Birdo's past a pass as well.
Bowser actually isn't defending the castles other than the final one, they're all other enemies disguised as Bowser, that's why they change when you fireball kill them.

Millenials had the problem of being traditionally pop media middle school pilled (i dunno what to call it but its like the mindset of being "totally an adult" at 13 and making your life into a sitcom or other scripted realistic-fictional media) and had the ability to go on the internet sadly
While not the entire reason, a big part of why a lot of new media people at the time went all in on hating is because negative content got clicks/views/whatever metric, and once monetization became a common thing it was off to the races, and turned an already self-feeding process into one that generated money.

Honestly, I’d say it’d come down to personality and tone. Bubsy ended up coming across as unlikable to me because he just kinda had this sorta… fake aura to him? He only existed to chase a trend and aged badly as soon as the puddle dried up. Ironically, I can say the same for those reviewers.
I do not like Bubsy and I’m confused as to why people are suddenly acting like the Bubsy games are suddenly decent. They’re a mediocre at best and frustrating at worst set of games that really should’ve stayed in the 2000s, being forgotten alongside all the AVGN clones not dissimilar to them.

I wish you included what might be the WORST thing the Zelda fanbase has done. Do you know those Japan exclusive DS Tingle games? There was a time Nintendo considered bringing "Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland" to more countries. Nintendo sent out a survey to check what the AMERICAN fanbase thought of this game. Of course because of the Tingle hate at the time, those fans did NOT want that game coming here. So now you have extra context why the Tingle DS duology was (mostly) Japan exclusive. It's a combination of many different factors that translated poorly to an American audience. He's got that weird Japanese appearance and humorous mannerisms that westerners don't understand, especially not in the 90s. Then there the context of him being a middle aged man outcast from society who can only relate to children, just kinda hanging out and scouting things from afar. It's not a good look considering the moral panics, particularly around this time. And Wind Waker certainly didn't make it any better with the map quest.
I imagine that the reason there was a lot of hate on the 2000 and early 2010 was because a lot of people wanted to be the next avgn, so they just started cursing without the charm of avgn, that and maybe 911 or something idk lol

The irony about Amy is that recent games lessened the lovestruck aspect and a lot fans surprisingly hate it.
I personally don't think the Tingle hatred really picked up until Wind Waker, and I think half of it was because he kinda came off as a lot shadier than his harmless counterpart from Majora's Mask, even ignoring how much you needed to grind rupees to pay to get his charts read; making his relatives work away on his island (one dedicated to himself, no less) in addition to possibly kidnapping a random stranger, dressing him up like Tingle and putting him to work as well. I guess this is why we got the Majora's Mask Tingle in Hyrule Warriors and not the Wind Waker version.
I nominate Krystal as another example. She got benched as a damsel in her debut to everyone's groans but her sweetness and cool mix and match of sci fi and fantasy earned her a following. When she got added to Smash Bros as an assist trophy, the only criticism is that she isn't playable.

I swear, the original N64 version of Star Fox Adventures (Dinosaur Planet if you want to be a nerd) had Krystal's playtime scale much longer than what we got. I have a friend who hates Daisy, mostly just due to the fact that she associates her with some bad personal experiences.
Also, Mel herself actually got some stuff wrong about Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels and Super Mario Bros. 2. Namely, the reason Nintendo originally decided against its original release wasn’t because of its difficulty, but rather because of how generally similar it was to the original Super Mario Bros. This concern was due to the fact that the Video Game Crash of 1983 happened predominantly due to loss of interest in the medium due to the lack of variety, so Nintendo took Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic, and, instead of just changing some sprites and text to Mario characters, actually did tweak some other aspects of the game, such as how the character select works.
Or it could be both.

Heck, when I played SMBtLL, it wasn’t much more difficult than SMB1 outside of a select few sections, but to be fair, despite expectations, SMB1 isn’t the easiest to e games out there.
If I'm not mistaken, Howard Phillips has said on a couple of occasions he didn't approve the game for localization because of its difficulty. Games made for the Famicom Disk Expansion had save functionality, which would have made the difficulty more digestible, like it is in Lost Levels (which also had its difficulty tweaked). However, the NES hadn't released a game with a battery yet, and were unlikely to start with SMB2, so powering off would have meant starting from 1-1 every time. While there are multiple factors including the market crash and the game's similarity to SMB, difficulty did play a major role.

It's also worth noting that Doki Doki Panic was originally conceptualised as a vertical-based platformer, which Miyamoto saw and suggested that they added more Mario-ish design to it to turn it into the game we know now. It was heavily influenced by Mario, and also was made by the same team as the original Mario, so it isn't as dramatic of a change as people claim it to be. Had Nintendo not been approached by Fuji Television it probably would have been released as a Mario game from the very beginning, but who knows.

I like the aesthetics of water levels, but not the mechanics. In a lot of older games, water levels had really annoying controls or air mechanics tied to them. Just look at most water levels in Sonic. For every good water level like Aquarium Park, there's like 4 Labyrinth Zones (across games in general I mean.)

However what people need to remember is that Sonic is known more for just speed. Yuji Naka even said the appeal of Sonic is that speed is the reward for good platforming. The boost games ignore that rule which explains why Yuji Naka left.

Ohh! I got a funny little story about that Ocarina of Time owl! I never got to play the game as a kid, so I had to emulate it as an adult. So, I was reading all of the dialogues to get all that sweet lore I missed out on.
When I met the owl again in the Lost Woods, he told me how to NOT get looped in the maze. He said, "follow the music". My boyfriend was pretty shook when I told him about this, since he knows the game by heart and just runs past everything pretty effortlessly. "I didn't know he said that"

Well tingle is first and foremost a joke character and sometimes jokes don't really translate well. I certainly think he's funny, but I understand why people wouldnt like him since he's intended to be kinda creepy.
As a Baldi's Basics enjoyer myself, i know there are a lot of characters in that game that people absolutely DESPISE, probably since, due to the nature of the game, most of the other non-Baldi NPCs are made to make your notebook collecting experience harder.
BUT by far the most hated character in that game is definitely Playtime, she is one of the characters that forces you to stop what you were doing completely, but i feel people always point to her for being one of the most annoying, is because 1: It takes like a whole 10 seconds to deal with her (If you don't have the scissors) and 2: She is one of the classic characters, which means she was added in the original gamejam version of classic, so she was one of the only actually annoying characters to have to deal with, since the other characters either weren't as prominent in the gameplay, or their mechanic was easily counteractable (Playtime in Baldi's Basics plus isn't that bad when you consider all the other idiots you have to deal with, but those guys just weren't in the first game!)
Honestly i get it, she is a pain to deal with, but i honestly kinda love her- she just a silly little goober who just wants to play jumprope, i guess it's fine to hate her in the game, but like her outside the game, that's what i do

Its funny how so much of this hate (or pointless edge) spawned from early internet communities and got passed down regardless if newer gamers never even experienced the originals! Like youll see kids online younger than the 3Ds claim to hate these guys and have no reason when asked. Even tho its cooled down today its funny to see how far we've come and im glad most people respect birdo now, the only people that seem to hate her now are just genuinely transphobic.

(The article being about characters being beloved in the region of the real world their media is from, but hated in another part of the world, like how Tingle was/is hated in the USA (and I guess Canada too? Idk) but beloved in the Zelda series’ home nation of Japan.)
I never understood why Luigi was so hated in online cartoons, he is so cool.
I never got the hate for Navi. Maybe because the 3DS version increased how long she would talk to you; but it was never as prominent as how others would describe.

Tingle is universally hated, as he is an "okama". In Japan that's a concept that lumps feminine man, crossdressing men, gay and bi men, non-binary males and trans women (yes, not trans men) all together. It's supposed to be a degoratory stereotype with EXACT interpretation of what westerners think of "lesser men". The japanese learned that from westerners on the reformation period, when the emperor obligated everyone to copy the europeans and "the new-worlders". Gamers and anime fans actually move mountains to convince everyone there is nothing wrong with it. Most common justification is that "it's just culture".
Same for Birdo, tho Birdo had a recent rebranding and is considered trans representation now

Most of the characters hate come from the unfortunate choices made by the developers in how they implemented game mechanics. So it's not the characters fault really. But though tingle in wind waker is annoying due to how he was implemented. He still deserves the hate because he really is a bad person. He literally kidnapped someone for hard labor and makes them dress like him. His other versions might not be that bad. But wind waker is really more of a villain.
Hearing "millennials gaslighting you" as a millennial has fucking aged me and I'm on the tail end of it. 💀

If you ask me, it's easier to scapegoat a character who was in a bad product than complain about a bad product.
But as we all know, the issue isn't the characters. It's the writing of the characters.
Let's admit it. When a product is bad, so are the characters. And afaik, it's easier to hate on a new character who was written badly in said bad product than to hate the product as a whole. Cause that would also mean hating on the characters we DO love that also suffer from said bad writing.
To wit, Scrappy-Doo, while annoying, is the summation of the poor writing during Scooby's time, not because of his gremlin design or annoying voice. But what we aren't aware of is how awful Scooby and Shaggy were during the Scrappy era. And no one wants to hate the duo at all.
I've seen many bad/divisive characters people claimed that were reintroduced and were made likable. I can name two: Webby (Ducktales) and Broly (Dragon Ball). While the latter has his fans, he was a divisive figure. And when they were remade, without the need to fundamentally change them, people love those characters.
I know you mentioned characters like Navi and Tingle, but I’m surprised you didn’t mention Fi from Skyward Sword!
She’s basically become the “new Navi” in terms of the Zelda tutorial character everyone seems to hate for no reason.
To me, she’s even less hatable than Navi. Her design is great, her theme is awesome, and I love the little character arc they give her, with moments of her subtly showing more emotion as the game goes on.
Also, she’s the literal spirit of the Master Sword, and that’s just objectively awesome.
And that ending scene! God! It made me tear up so bad!
She thankfully was nerfed in the remastered Switch version from constantly giving you tips and tutorials to a feint glow on the master sword indicating she would give you help with a press of a button. So there's that, now for Navi...
I think Fi is liked more w BotW and TotK hammering home her sacrifice, constantly there and helping but not able to reach out for more than moments at a time.
6:15 "Why is Bowser even here? He's not defending the castle with the Princess in it." He's actually not! Those are his minions disguised as him ruling over the other 7 castles. You can see their Bowser disguise fall away as they die if you hit them with enough fireballs.
This video itself feels like it's trying to gaslight me with some of these. A good chunk of the Tingle hate came from how ugly he looked and the creepy vibes he gives off in Wind Waker, what with you having to break him out of jail, then finding out that he owns slaves and vengeful idols. Not to say there weren't homo-homeboy haters, just that homophobia wasn't the _sole_ reason for the West's disdain for him. I found his MM incarnation endearing, but his WW incarnation had slightly sinister undertones. I haven't played his Rupeeland spinoffs, but I heard he gets a glow-up.
And the Rabbids deserve every bit of hate, considering what happened to Rayman. Canning a whimsical platformer mascot, and what would've been a really interesting game going by the trailers and leaked builds of Rayman 4, in favor of a shallow fotm concept, driven by shareholders and mindless focus groups. The only difference between Rabbids and the generic shooter protagonists of the late 00s is the target demographic. The only silver lining is that Rayman was always shaped by what's currently popular, going from classic cartoon, to dark and mysterious masterpiece, to John Leguizamo braaapp-fest, to silly French webtoon, so Rabbids replacing him ultimately made little difference in the long run.
Agreed, I’d openly say homophobia was absolutely not the sole major reason for the Tingle hate. Another reason was Tingle charging ridiculous prices in WW for his charts, which are mandatory for finishing the game. And there’s eight of them. Which made that part of the game an unbearable slog. Thank god they toned it down quite a bit in HD, but by then, the damage had been done.
The reason why people hated gen 5 pokemon was because in Pokemon B/W, all the pokemon in it were new gen 5 ones, so you couldn't get any older gen Pokemon until endgame.

Yeah. Plus, people forget that Ocarina was kind of the first big name open(ish) world 3d adventure. Nintendo put Navi in with the assumption that kids would boot up the game after school, forget what they had been doing yesterday, and need a hint. It was 1996, online guides weren't as common or accessible, for most kids getting a guide would cost money!
The tingle situation was even more nonsensical because he has two games to his name that didn't get to the us but both of them confirmed that he is straight.
Most of these characters are hated by people because they have annoying voices or annoying mechanics that interrupted your gameplay. It's not hard to understand why they'd be annoyed.

Also in her defense, the kiss helped revive Sonic like in a fairytale, and Sonic acts like a human being more than a hedgehog and has a anthro body. On top of Rouge and Knuckles already being established as a possible relationship, when that’s also between two different species. Makes it in my opinion okay for Elise to date Sonic. As he’s more of a human with a drastic different appearance, than just a hedgehog.

My experience with Big the Cat was honestly so phenomenal. As a kid who grew up on Somecallmejohnny and The Completionist, naturally I hated Big. Because all the cool guys on the internet hated Big. "UGH! HE'S SO LAME AND STUPID! AND I DON'T WANNA FISH IN A SONIC GAME!" Y'know the type. Then, I don't know what caused it, but I woke up with a revelation; "Oh my god. He's just a dopey guy who wants to fish with his frog. He's done nothing wrong (mostly because he's done nothing in general). He is... just. A guy. Trying to vibe." And from that moment onward, Big was my favorite character.
Also, I'd like to nominate Axl from Mega Man X for this list. He's in an incredibly similar boat as Silver, being as his debut appearance was a game that was universally terrible all around. However, he has a bomb-ass character design, legitimately interesting backstory (especially by Mega Man standards), and has a distinct role in the Hunter Trio that compliments the battle-weary X and Zero extremely well. Plus his gameplay in Mega Man X8 is great! But for many people, you bring him up and all they wanna talk about is his annoying voice in X7 and how they just wanted to play as X.
I watched the same people you did growing up it seems. But for Big, I personally think that he's better when he's a supporting character. He just doesn't have enough going on his own to make him an interesting protagonist. But playing with him in Heroes is really fun and he's one of the better party members in Chronicles.
Most of these really did just boil down to either homophobia, transphobia, sexism, or not being a generic “badass male guy with guns” character. …or just being a Sonic character in general, remember how some people complained back in the day that Sonic had… friends? Like as in, the series had characters? …why the hell did they want Sonic and Eggman to be the only characters in the franchise?

As someone that grew up watching a lot of ScrewAttack and other random Gamer reviewers back in the day that would make "top 10 worst characters in video games" type videos I feel like they did some form of physic damage to my 11-13 year old brain at the time.
- What dealt a pretty big hit to Tingle's case was the Triforce Chart translations - the total costs were ENORMOUS. This gets alleviated a bit in Wind Waker HD, where Link only needs to get three Triforce Charts.
- Ironic how opinions on Luigi, Daisy, Waluigi, Birdo, and Bowser Jr. have changed.
(But I'll NEVER get over certain Smash fans that make death threats in Waluigi's "honor".)
- In the Vanillite line's defense, they're actually living icicles covered in snow. Shaping them like happy ice cream cones is a stylistic choice that also references the kinds of classic food mascots for, say, old American diners.
- I can't help but wonder if Ember's mere presence posed some "threat" to Spyro x Cinder shippers...
- Remember all those people who get pissy whenever Baby Mario cries in the Yoshi's Island series? You know, the thing that happens when they get careless and get hit? I shudder to think of their parenting abilities...

The reason people dislike Amy Rose back then was because of her bad personally after SA2. When the Sonic X cartoon came out, she became more obsessive, pushy, threatening, and a bit stalkerish. Then that personally was put into the games.

Jeez people have had some real hatred for these characters, I mean I know I probably used to share some of this hatred but I never really cared that much. If I hated a character like Bubsy for example, I just wouldn't interact with anything related to him. It goes to show some of the stupid things people do in a blind rage, just kind of hating without giving it much thought. Splendid video.

I'd like to believe those guys have moved past the ableism and transphobia they exhibited here (again, this stuff was from over a decade ago), but I don't keep up with them like I used to, so maybe that's wishful thinking.
If this video ever gets a follow-up, I think it'd be worth talking about Eliwood from Fire Emblem. He used to be poorly-regarded for similar reasons to Raiden (not as "cool" as fellow protagonists Hector and Lyn, plus it's terribly unmanly to cry when your dad dies right in front of you, as we all know), so I think he'd fit this topic pretty well. That's if there's enough material for a second video in the first place, though. You covered a lot of good ground here already.

I was gaslit into hating Berdly (Deltarune). By myself.
I'll help quickly explain things with why Gen 5 became so despised: At the time when Gen 5 was coming out, a lot of older fans (and people who ditched the series around Gen 2 or 3 who didn't wanna be seen as cringe for liking it by high school bullies/ect) had come back wanting to try out the new games. And because the base game of Black and White were new pokemon only, a lot of people who didn't know any of them (and/or who didn't want to be seen as just fad chasers who only used Gen 1 pokemon knowledge to act like they knew what they were doing/saying) threw a fit because they couldn't just use what they knew/had before at the start. And so they took their frustrations out on the new pokemon because they couldn't only use what they wanted/knew, until it stuck forever. And with this, the kinda linear nature of Black/White and a few other issues at the time, it's what led to Gen 5 being seen at the time as the worst generation ever.
After that, every gen ever has had more and more focus on every generation along-side the current/new gen be found in grass or other parts of the game, and an ever larger push of 'genwun' pandering as some like to call it. To the point some wish Game Freak could have done another soft reboot like Gen 5 for a clean slate and get things in order no matter how much people crying they can't have Charizard for the Nth time get upset over it.
I mean at least you could still catch em all
Birdo's case is also unusual in that the trans community is divided on whether her recent portrayal (being more of a movie star/singer) is better or her early appearances are too much of a black mark on her legacy.
Given Poison from Final Fight used to be based on a *very* dated loophole for the heroes not hitting women before she became more heroic, I'm willing to give Birdo's past a pass as well.
