I love these longer videos from my IIHS, reminds me of when I was a 11-year-old kid, begging my grandfather to get rid of his minivan because they had performed so terribly in the test. Thank you for all the work that you guys have done to ensure that our cars are safe. If it wasn’t for you guys, we probably be rolling around in death trap.
I also love these videos, explaining all the different tests in detail. I also use this information to convince my in-laws to replace their 20 year old rav 4 which is basically a tin can with no safety features.
I have been watching IIHS videos since I was a kid and will continue to be a huge fan of yours. I have to say these videos have inspired me to study in STEM fields. I'm 26 now and going to start my PhD program this fall. Thank you IIHS!
Congrats on starting your PhD program. I am much older than you, and I remember as a kid I will call them every year to get their latest results in the mail.
You should make a "shop tour" or a "day in the life" video of all the different testing equipment you use and how it works. Would be interesting to see how you pick vehicles, how you set them up, and run the tests.
IIHS, some of us have been watching your videos for 10+ years since we were children. It would be very cool if you guys would introduce a program where viewers can come watch a live crash test just like the manufactures even if its just a few spots a year!
Now that you started doing the Small Overlap Test in the mid 2010s, you guys should retest older vehicles that were crash tested in the 90s and 00s as well as ones that were featured on Dateline when the Moderate Overlap Test was still new to see how they do in the Small Overlap Test. I’m very curious how they would perform in the Small Overlap Test especially if they received a GOOD or POOR rating in the Moderate Overlap Test when that was new. Poor/Marginal rated vehicles from the Moderate Overlap Test that I’d like to see tested in the Small Overlap Test would be the… 1998/2002 Ford Explorer, 1996 Dodge Caravan, Toyota Previa, Pontiac Transport, 2001 Ford F-150, Isuzu Rodeo, Chevy Blazer, Chevy Cavalier, etc While Good/Acceptable rated vehicles from the Moderate Overlap Test that I’d like to see tested in the Small Overlap Test would be the… Chevy Lumina, pre 2006 Ford Taurus, 2004 Ford F-150, Honda Odyssey, first generation Toyota Sienna, Ford Windstar, etc
Thank you for being a flower of light in a field of darkness. You have truly made the world a better place. You have the highest standards in the world. When you shine your light, every human everywhere benefits. Thank you for informing my car purchases for my 34 years of driving history. -- Plus, it's just fun to watch cars get driven into solid objects. :)
Seatbelts and crumple zones likely help to save my life after the driver of a car I was riding in lost control and veered off the roadway down a steep embankment and into a tree. Without the safety advances of the last 50 years I likely would not be typing this comment today. Thank you IIHS for helping to save my life and the lives of so many others.
I went from being a young kid car enthusiast and cringing over all the new cars getting smashed up in the IIHS videos to an adult researching safety ratings on IIHS when considering my next car to drive my own kids around in now. Thanks for all the work smashing those cars, IIHS!
Thank you IIHS for saving many lives. Anyway, what does Institute think about rescanning some old crash tests? I think it's quite interesting to watch them in 4K. April 2, 2023 11:18PM
Hi IIHS I love the videos you make and the dedication you have for the safety of all road users and I just have one quick question. What should you do when an airbag deploys things not to do, things to do, where should you have your hands on the steering wheel. Can the front passenger have their hand on the door handle where you ret your arm on hold on to that pole or should they not do that? Thanks again IIHS for improving car safety!
I grew up riding around in those old boats from the 70s. Those big things would fold up like a tin can when involved in a front overlap crash. Thank the Lord I was never riding in a car that was involved in an accident back then. They don't make them like they used to and thank goodness for that! Here's to modern cars with airbags, crumple zones and abs brakes.
Let’s just make sure we don’t force ever increasing size of vehicles in order to meet safety standards. We need to slowly reduce the size of cars for more efficiency and less road damage and material consumption.
Do you test the semi tractor trailers when they are empty, only weighing 34,000 pounds, or do you test them loaded, weighing 80,000 pounds? Very different results, especially since most semis on the road weigh anywhere from 65,000 pounds to 80,000 pounds rolling down the road.
If you rear end one going very fast you're probably gonna end up like Jane Mansfield regardless of if it's loaded or not. Even with the "Jane bar" they still usually fail and cause underride at higher speeds. Especially larger cars like the 1966 Buick Electra that she and the driver hit the trailer with are more prone to breaking the underride bar(although obviously the trailer they hit didn't have one).
very interesting video and important work for road safety! What actually happens to the crashed vehicles? do you sell them? or are they disassembled or scrapped?
General Motors should answer as to why they kept the Pontiac transport / chevolet venture on sale after this 97 crash test up into 2005!! This van didn't even do great in the governments full frontal test. In the NHTSA test the dash and steering wheel pushes upward making the dummys head snap backwards. Such an unsafe vehicle. I show people that crash test when I see them driving a venture so they know to get rid of it.
Raising the bar? It would be more accurate to say that IIHS is moving the goal post again. Which guarantees the continuation of soaring sticker prices that will eventually make the purchase of a new automobile unobtainable for middle class buyers. With the added bonus the of ever increasing insurance rates.
Thank you all so much for the work you do!

thats the reason that i only drive Volvo and Subaru today, because of IIHS! now a lot of brands have Top safety pick but not in the 90's
He got rid of his minivan and got a Corvair so he could be so much safer

Maybe it doesn't count, but there is a video made by them about a day in the life of one of their crash test dummies.
They've also made behind the scenes videos that show the process.
This is almost like a movie trailer. I'd deadass love watch a IIHS movie haha. I want to thank you guys for everything you do!
I know it feels like a trailer for a movie 😂😂

It must feel great to work for an organization whose work saves lives. Most of us aren't so lucky.

I've been watching crash test since I was a little boy and 12 years later I'm still her. I hope I get to be a part of the new generation IIHS.
My dream job I’d love to get a work for iihs once I finish off at uni in maybe the tech based side of the operation.
Would love to work for you doing this!!!❤

you can't make all the massive trucks/suv's just vanish. it can never be undone.
But I want a Lincoln Continental

What do you guys do with the cars afterward?
We sell crashed cars to a local salvage yard that resells parts.

Actually crash avoidance systems don’t work well on Mazdas. It’s supposed to assist you in stopping to prevent massive crashes and it’s won’t work
