My daughter's South African God-Father got a Military Cross while with the Assam Regt. for his actions at Kohima. He has written a history of the Regt - Pieter Steyn (rhymes with "stain") 1959 - and also wrote a book called "Away With Shadows" about the Nagas after the war which resulted in him being removed from India as a suspected CIA spy!
Yes, Sir, Peter Steyns photo is seen in the book,Defeat unto Victory, by CE Lucas Phillips he was rather lanky tall and looked more like a learned professor ,, they will always be remembered by all the Nagas Indians Nepalese ,Britishers, and all other Allied people's and soldiers, for their gallantry and staggering courage in defending Nagaland and India against Japanese aggression, during April 1944,Rest in.peace, love from Kerala India,
@@thayiljoseph277 Yes, he was a tall as I am, and, as you say, looks like a Professor, not a soldier! He inroduced me to the Assam Regimental drink. Dark rum & fresh orange juice. I still drink it 30 years later...
Saving Kohima: The role of the Chamar Regiment in throwing away Japan Imperial Army out of India in 1944 needs to be shared/discussed. Chamar Regiment is no more in India or Pakistan now, however, General Ayub Khan, first martial law President of Pakistan was from Chamar Regiment.
My grandfather Sub Maj Khagendra Nath Gogoi fought the Battle of Jessami

No Nagas ever served with the Gurkhas or any other Indian Army regiment.
There were Nagas in the Assam Regiment, the local Nagas were scouts and source of intelligence and as porters. So much for your half baked info.
The Assam Rifles recruited Gorkhas only until recently. No Assamese.
