    The chimney sweep I have is self-employed with his own van and equipment. He cleans my chimney once a year and he is fully booked with customers the whole year through. It takes him an hour to clean the chimney but he says that some chimneys take longer to clean.
    He charges 50 UK pounds per hour but prices in London can be up to 90 UK pounds per hour. He's been doing this job for 35 years and cleans four chimneys per day. That's 200 pounds per day in his hand, 1000 pounds for a five day week. That's an income of around 50,000 pounds per year.
    My son goes to college to get academic qualifications so that he can get a so-called good job, but I doubt that he'll ever achieve the high income of a chimney sweep. He's now considering quitting college and becoming a chimney sweep.

      I worked for a chimney sweep company in the US for 15 years. 12 guys in the company sweeping 4-5 houses a day each. The price to clean one flue when I started was $219 and if there was a second flue in the house that price was $129=$348 no matter how long you were there. When I left that company the charge for one flue cleaning was $450 and the second flue cleaning was $250=$700 for one house. Just take the $450 charge multiply by 4 cleanings a day=$1,800 a day for one worker multiply by 12=$21,600 a day for the company, multiply that for a week 5 days =$108,000 a week. It does fluctuate up and down, but definitely a multimillion dollar company. The worker would make anywhere from 10% up to 21% of the work they did and depending on how experienced they were. With that said it’s extremely hard to get the clientele and actually make a good living owning your own chimney sweep business.

    Do professional chimney cleaners use the same equipment as DIY chimney cleaners?
    Where can I get the professional equipment?

      Hire a certified sweep. If you DIY and burn your house down, good luck with the insurance claim.

    Thank you for commenting. Ear protection not needed as our vacuum's noise level is only 78 dB. As for mask, while the HEPA vac is normally powered up for the entire work process it was turned off for the voices to be heard.

    Absolutely WHAT NOT TO DO when cleaning a chimney. NO MASK #1. #2.....The hose nozzle should be inside the firebox, the bottom 3/4 of the firebox sealed off with cloth and magnets, thus creating a negative pressure area that dust cannot escape. Insert rode in the top 1/4 opening. With a power drill, not a wimpy rechargeable drill, rotate rods in one direction on the way up and reversed on the way down. I wonder how many times in a day the cloth gets wrapped around the rod and dusting the interior of peoples houses with soot. I will be posting HOW TO videos shortly to show sweeps HOW TO do the job right !!

    Risky sweeping like that feeding the rods under, it can easily get caught in the sheet and spin and brake your fingers or hand. I always feed them through the middle via a plastic tube. never the less, good tips for beginners no doubt.

    nice job, very professional, althought most of my customers demand I clean from the top, the power sweep saves a lot of elbow grease but in ceratin cases mite damage the flu?

    • @akaredcrossbow
      @akaredcrossbow 5 років тому +1

      All from the bottom is more effective, efficient and safer for the house to control soot. If the customer wants you to go to the top, do it and take a photo and show them how clean it is. I never clean from the top unless it’s necessary. I have been using a drone in some cases to take photos or video instead of having to build a jungle gym to get to some of these chimneys. If I find a problem with the chimney after using the drone I will let the customer know that it will cost extra money to set up multiple ladders to get up there to fix the issue. I won’t charge them for setup, but now I know I didn’t waste my time for setup and have them tell me they don’t want to fix the issue. 👍🏻👍🏻

    What is the best size and brand drill to use for this. I have been using a Hitachi 18 volt, 1/2" chuck and it seems like the batteries die, or overheat pretty quickly. Hitachi has the overload protection on their Lithium Ion drills and I am getting tired of them going dead in the middle of sweeping.

      How stiff is your brush? You want it to fit properly, but not be too large. Might even want to trim some of the brush bristles to reduce friction. Just a thought.
