Sandoz was the name of the pharmaceutical manufacturer (now, Novartis) that first synthesized LSD in 1938. No doubt, this is the reference made in this awesome song.
I always get Voodoo Chile by Hendrix running in my head after I listen to this one. Heard Sandoz played by Alice Cooper on his radio show. I'm glad it finally made it to youtube!
this is devil music done right! and for 1967 the bending notes on electric guitar and bass may actually precede similar stylings from black sabbath chronologically!
I have the original 45 of this ridiculous groove. It actually is the B side to “When I was young” , cut in 1967 They had a sound that matched or trumped anyone out at this time. Black, white, red, didn’t matter. They can play
Reminds me of the bass sound in "Don't bring me down", by itself a super precursor to what early hard rock would become. Wouldna been no Black Night or Smoke on the Water without it.
Wrong lineup in the photo for this song. This was the B-side of the first single by the revised lineup of Eric Burdon, Barry Jenkins, John Weider, Vic Briggs and Danny McCullough
Joe Osorio yup. Pharmaceutical grade LSD used to treat psychiatric patients back in the day. Came in these little kegs that had about 80 hits per keg. My uncle got busted did 15 yrs for driving a stolen rig and transporting a truck load of it back in the 60s or 70s I think.
Not only the manufacturer, the discovers - LSD 25 was the 25th substance they were testing. The stories of the beats and early hippies who were PAID to take this drug in 60s are wonderful reads.
These guys are from England In England they pronounce Hamsters are ampsters. Has to do with back in the days Of The Pied Piper "the kids have to Deal with it" and they had gerbles
After all these years, tonight I just learned 10 minutes ago that Eric Burdon and John Weider wrote "A girl named Sandoz"!! And to think it's inspired by LSD is so fuckin rad!! So much nostalgia going on right now lol

Dear Dennis Mohican: Sounds like you have been getting trash LSD or none at all. Because, if you had experienced any pure formulation of the compound developed by the chemist Hoffman your mind would have greater breadth and be open to opinions different than your own. I suggest to you good sir that you find a connection near a university known for its chemistry program. The kids today are mixing up some wonderful batches. Good luck. Love, joy, and peace to you.
Amen brother. I have some regrets about doing too many different substances in my youth but, the big " L " is not one of them. I've taken many journeys with several types from Orange Sunshine to Window pane. It has helped me realize and see so many things through my mind's eye and it has help me to become the peaceful, generous, kind, cosmic and spiritual person that I consciously try to be. Back in the daze when a half of hit would take you on a 12 hour journey. I was talking to a millinial want to be hipster about our era and I asked him,"how is the LSD today"? He said it's good, you just need to take 5 or 6 hits and you'll go flying for about 5 hours. Man, what a difference 50 years makes. Thank God for blessing me to survive from my party daze and for the time and space that I grew up. Peace and Love all!
The Pumpkins version ain't REAL bad, but it has none of the subtly, melodicism and soulfulness mixed in with the psychedelic grit like the original does. What's more, Billy Corgan's vocals are half buried in the mix, though I'm greatly relieved by that.
I totally agree! The Pumpkins transformed this song adding in the 'screeching kick ass' guitar solos. I was almost disappointed when I heard the animals original version.
Cellar92 Nothing to be disappointed about, a great track from a great era of rock-n-roll and it seems incredibly heavy for 1966/7!! How's it even possible? The Pumpkins track has more Hendrix in it
The smashing pumkings covered this but I didn't know this was an animals tune. This is killer
My absolute favorite Animals song!!
Top 5 for me for sure

That bass tone

Distortion??
My mind is blown! I always thought Sp was original
Raw, stripped down pyschedelia ... love it.
Eric Burdon is like a beat poet. A Keroac or Bukowski of the 60s
Melts in your mind, not in your hand!
I play this song every tuesday at the bar, along with we gotta get outta this place. Because at that point, we really gotta get outta that place lol.
too psychedelic ,,and one of their best

Sandoz was a manufacturer of LSD
Well, thank you. That explains the stupid lyrics to this song from my childhood.
Stupid Lyrics?? You are the fucking DUMBASS who didn't understand it.. LLama!! Bet you never ever took a hit of acid in your little life!!

Ken Kesey was dosing on sandoz when he wrote “One flew”.

I wonder who played xylophone on this track ?
Vic Briggs, who also plays guitar on the song. But its vibraphone. John Weider plays guitar and violin.
Sounds like a song jimi hendrix would write
Strangely enough it was The Animals bassist Chas Chandler who set up Jimi Hendrix with his band!
Yes indeed!
I came here to say that, fantastic
Eric was a friend and fan of Jimi’s.
Ta grow strength first...iplay the bass strings on a six..lead rythem

This was actually the New Animals with Vic Briggs, John Weider, Barry Jenkins and Danny McColloch. McColloch is playing the bass on this track.
Taking note!!!!
Heavy bass in this song
The new animals 1967 were much better on their instruments

The Animals are great but the Pumpkins cover is 10x better.
Yea ok. I bet even Billy Corgan himself would disagree.

I'm not much of a fan of cover tunes but I thought The Smashing Pumpkins blew The Animals out of the water with their version.
well like that's just like your opinion man lol
both versions kick ass. This one is more mellow
