  • Once the cables have been threaded into the shifter and the housing has been routed to the rear cable box, you can fit the shifter cable to the External gear mech.
    When replacing the shifter cables for an External gear mech, you will require:
    Either the standard length replacement shifter cable set (Article #8268) or the tandem length set (Article #8267), a 200mm cable measuring aid or tape measure, side cutters, a 2mm Allen key, a TX20 wrench, an 8mm wrench and some grease.
    The cable box pre-mounted for test-fitting, can now be easily removed.
    Pull the shifter cable completely through the housing, checking the housing is seated correctly in the shifter and routed smoothly along the frame without any unnecessary 'kinks'.
    Pull a shifter cable out to its bedstop - in this film, we have chosen to trim the cable that rotates the shifter towards gear #1 first. This cable must be measured with the 200mm cable measuring aid or a tape measure and trimmed 200mm from the housing. Make sure that the cable is pulled taut before cutting!
    Now trim the second cable in the same way. Pull the cable until the shifter reaches the other bedstop, measure, pull taut and trim.
    Unscrew the two barrel adjusters by approximately 2mm and thread these onto the shifter cables.
    For orientation, on the right we have routed the cable into the cable box. The top cable is Shifter cable #14, the lower is Shifter cable #1. Please also take note of the correct orientation of the cable pulley itself:- the side with the recess always faces the SPEEDHUB.
    Regardless of which direction the cable box is mounted, Shifter cable #14 is inserted into the upper blind hole of the cable pulley and secured with a 2mm Allen key. Shifter cable #1 goes into the remaining lower blind hole and is secured from behind with the 2mm Allen key.
    Wrap shifter cable #1 around the cable pulley once and hold it in this position whilst doing the same with shifter cable #14 in the opposite direction.
    Place the wrapped cable pulley into the cable box with shifter cable #14 in the top position. Ensure the barrel adjusters are seated correctly in the cable box exits.
    Be certain the cable pulley runs smoothly by rotating the twist Shifter through all 14 gears.
    Fit and secure the cable box lid with two TX20 screws to complete this stage of the shifter cable replacement.
    Before connecting the two components together, ensure that the Twist Shifter and SPEEDHUB are synchronised. Rotate the Twist shifter to show gear #14. Next, using an 8mm wrench, rotate the hexagonal peg of the External gear mech anticlockwise to its bedstop to ensure that the SPEEDHUB is also in gear #14.
    Lightly coat the contact areas of the gear mech and cable pulley with a little grease. Rotating the shifter slightly back-and-forth helps the two components to connect. Secure the cable box in place with the knurled nut.
    Use the barrel adjusters to correct cable tension (a minimum of 2mm is required). As the final step, check that all 14 speeds are present - keeping in mind that 14 speeds is 13 indexed 'clicks'.

    Use Shimano TL-CT12 cable cutters and also heat the cable for 10sec over a naked lighter flame before cutting.
    This tool and method cuts the cable PERFECTLY! :-)
    Do not try to thread a frayed cable into the cable pulley! The cable threads will be kinked and will rub on the inside of the pulley box where they'll eventually fail and jam.

    Is it me or does the 14 cable actually have to go on the BOTTOM to make it shift correctly?

    Just the video I was looking for, excellent directions and footage. This was my first Rohloff installation, and I got it right the first try :)

    Thank you for the video! I replaced both cables but now gear 14 is gear 1 and gear 1 is 14. I guess I did something wrong with the cable replacement, but whatever: I'll use it like this :)

    You have to do exactly backwards of the instructions for this hub to be shifting into the correct gear on the indicator the gear 14 must go into the ( lower blind hole)

      Noticed the same thing, pdf manual shows that once you pull the 14 for trimming 1 should move in and be visible shorter.

    @2:17 she does not tell us that there is another cable seat hole after the allen screw in aluminum donut, both cables haf to go past the allen screw into that second hole. If you have a frayed cable you will have problem.

    • @willsillar802
      @willsillar802 7 років тому

      Great point. Need to get the right hole - if you fix the cable in the wrong way up you're going to struggle with the frayed distorted end when you put it in the right hole.

    Is it just me, but when I cut the cables to 200mm, they are way too short to get the pulley back into the shifter box. Where am I going wrong? I even backed the cables out of the blind holes a bit, so there are a couple of millimeters extra to work with. My cable adjusters end up as in the right image at 2:46 where the ends are just above and below the allen key holes, yet in the video at 3:04 the ends are miraculously 15mm further back, in line with the edge of the pulley, with no further explanation. What gives?

    • @ralph17p
      @ralph17p 4 роки тому +4

      I cut one of the outers back by 15mm leaving the inners the same and I was able to get the cables to fit in the shifter box with just a few mm of the cable adjusters protruding. I don't know if there are different versions of the external shifter box, if the instructions are incorrect, or if I did something wrong, but it seems to be working fine now. In future I'll be measuring 205-210mm for each of the inners and save myself some frustration.

      I had the same problem. I managed to force it in. The only reason I can imagine that Rohloff specifies such a tight fit, is cable stretch, though that’s probably not the reason. Why make such a sophisticated product and get the installation specs wrong? Likewise, if you fill the hub with 25ml of oil as Rohloff stipulates, you’ll get weeping at the seals. Why not simply tell owners to fill the hub with 16-17ml to avert that issue? It makes no sense.

    I just finished installing mine and I'm noticing the shifting dial is difficult to turn after connecting the mech to hub. I greased the pulley as instructed. Is this normal? Will it wear in? I mean it's at the point that I need to remove my gloves to get a better grip.
