Hello ma'am I'm your plus class student Ma'am please help me with one doubt......Q) The formation of oxide ion, O²‐ (g) from oxygen atom requires first an exothermic and then endothermic step as shown below:-
O+e- ->O^-; /\H°= -141kJ mol-¹
O^‐+e- -> O^²-; /\H°= +780 kJ mol-1
Thus process of formation of O^²- in gas phase is unfavorable even though O²- is isoelectronic with neon. It is due to fact that,
a. O- ion has comparatively smaller size than oxygen atom
B. Oxygen is more electronegative
C. Addition of electron in oxygen results in larger size of ion
D. Electron repulsion outweights the stability gained by achieving noble gas configuration
