Dies ist für mich seit einiger Zeit die mit Abstand wichtigste Oper der Gegenwart. Zwar schon gegen Ende der Sechziger Jahre geschrieben, ist sie erst seit der hier gezeigten szenischen Uraufführung in Bregenz präsent - und seitdem erobert sie die Opernbühnen langsam aber sicher. Großartiges Meisterwerk über ein extrem schwieriges Thema. Ich habe Schwierigkeiten, meine Begeisterung in Worte zu fassen ... und manchmal möchte ich einfach nur heulen.Unbedingt anschauen !

dem kann ich nur voll zustimmen. zum glück erlebt dieses wesentliche u überzeugende werk mehrfach Aufführungen! ein absolutes muss - in jeder hinischt!

Ich finde die Nachricht die die Oper übermitteln soll wirklich gut, aber ich finde es absolut anstrengend sie mir anzuhören und einfach nervig

The Passenger is the opera than Weinberg believed to be his masterpiece, and we have no reason to doubt him. It is one of the many tragic circumstances of his life that he was never to hear or see it performed. Why it was withdrawn from rehearsal is uncertain, but the consensus is that it was deemed inappropriate to specially plead for the Jewish victims of the Holocaust when so many Russians had died in WWII. This logic is absurd; the book's author is Polish, not Jewish, as are all but one of the camp's inmates. It is the genius of Weinberg that he was able to create music of real beauty and coherence from this hideous scenario without ever resorting to escapism or sentimentality.

The book was written by Polish writer Zofia Posmysz. She was an inmate in Auschwitz. Based on her book there was a Polish movie made in 1963 (it is available on UA-cam, but subtitles are in French), but the movie remained unfinished due to the tragic death of its director.
I do not know whether Weinberg saw the movie, but it is highly likely. I don’t think he could encounter the book.
