The Fairey Battle had to be the worst British bomber in WW2. Flying those things in daylight against German fighters was suicidal. Great respect to the men who were asked to do that.
My father was an observer in Battles in 1940. His opinion was fairly low but it wasn’t that different from the IL2 which was used in huge numbers to great effect throughout the war.
Was this the aircraft that I gave the dimmer switch to ? I do hope so.... The switch was recovered from a Battle that crashed into the Preseli Mountains... Whatever, kudos to the restorers ;-)
One of shittiest airplanes of WW2, among Blackburn botha, Blackburn roc, Breda ba.88 lince, PZL.30 zubr, Messerschmitt Me 210, Messerschmitt Me 163 komet, Douglas TBD devastator, Lavochkin gorbunov goudkov LaGG3, Yokosuka MXY-7 ohka
The Fairey Battle's problem was the lack of air superiority during the battle of France. Ju-87s were massacred when they were not escorted by Bf-1090s.
The Fairey Battle was a decent combat aircraft in 1936 and quite innovative for its time, but by 1940, it was definitely outclassed. Going into combat without fighter escorts didn't help either. The Douglas TBD Devastator was, in many ways, the naval equivalent of the Battle, and had done well at the Battle of the Coral Sea, or at least as well as the (terrible) Mk. 13 USN aerial torpedo would allow it to do. Something like the Me 210, however, is rather harder to explain away.
No. They were largely gone by then. The Battle was also a light tactical bomber, largely intended for Close Air Support and had no role to play in that campaign.
WOW! GREAT TO SEE A BATTLE AGAIN! WONDERFUL WORK! HOPE ITS ON DISPLAY SOON. IF YOU WANT TO SEE SOME BATTLE TRAINERS IN COLOR WATCH CAPTAINS OF THE CLOULDS! 1941 MOVIE, GREAT COLOR FILMED ON RCAF BASE AT JARVIS. BATTLE A FORGOTTEN PLANE BY SOME BUT WAS IMPORTANT IN EARY DAYS OF WAR, HAD VERY BRAVE CREWS AND COULD BE USEFUL, BUT IN REALITY A STUKA HAD A FAR BETTER CHANCE OF SURVIVAL AND WAS MUCH MORE ACCURATE BOMBER! STILL I LIKE THE BATTLE A LOT, A INTERESTING MACHINE!
@Toby Perris Well why not send a bomber to do the job of a bomber. A light bomber exists so the aircraft has other capability that doesn't make it vulnerable like a larger bomber; this plane was vulnerable and had a tiny bomb capacity - pointless in any other than the circumstance of attacking the defenceless.
@Toby Perris It played a roll like some other notable aircraft in having airmen killed. I'm not sure whether a tiny bombing mission is worth the loss of pilots and an aircraft that could safely be used as a trainer. The post WW1 RAF used aircraft built on the principle that the natural enemy weren't even allowed an air force - that wasn't a good idea.
The Battle is now on display at RAF Museum Hendon's Bomber Hall.
Whenever I see these old newsreels, I expect Mr Cholmondley-Warner and Grayson to suddenly appear.

0:17 should have left it intact, Fairs fair, it's Fairey battle, the enemy would be crazy to use it :)

You had to be very brave to pilot a Battle, it also killed Richard Shuttleworth.
Fairey Battles were remusteted as trainers in Canada for wireless and gunnery training.
@Poopingbotham not sure, i will find out for you where it is. i think its still in restoration but not sure.
THE FAIREY BATTLE REMINDS ME OF THE NAKAJIMA B6N TENZAN OR JILL,AND THE NAKAJIMA B5N KATE.
B6N, Kate and Jill were better
Poor tactics, load out, armament, armour and employment, not necessarily a poor aircraft
Massive cockpit!

Were any used in the battle of britian? Maybe it should have been given 4 firing guns instead of 1?

Some were used by Polish squadron s for raids on the channel ports but had been withdrawn by 18/19 October 1940 to be replaced by Wimpeys.

I don't know how it could be called a bomber.
It dropped bombs
@@paulhellawell5920 Fighters in many instances did that too, and they were called fighters.

Millennials wouldn't have a clue how to restore this!🙄
