    I had the great privilege of knowing Lonnie, a friend of my father's . Always joking around. Lovely chap. RIP Lonnie and Dad. Hope you're both getting up to antics somewhere.

      I wonder if my dad was ever mentioned. He was in the Army with Lonnie, used to skiffle on the drums with him occasionally 🙂

    My great great grandmother wrote the original chorus as a poem in the 1870's. The Sweet Singer of Michigan. Look her up!

    Every Sat. morning (in Canada) we had Lonnie Donegan as our soundtrack as we ate our super-fried English breakfast. (One English parent/one Canadian). I was just a little kid and I loved his records! The English parent would translate Brit slang for me.

    Such a shame we don't have anyone with his talents around today, and no
    TV programmes to showcase up and coming musicians.

    in 1960 i was three years old when i heard this, id say these artists of the 60 and 70 are real musicians and gave it there all true music

    I hurt my knee ma " Stop putting on the Agony" she use to say, Smack across the ear and sent back outside to play, with a stark warning " be home before it's dark or you'll get a bloody hiding"
    That was before this song came out, I'm talking about being a 8 or 9 year old at the end of ww2.
    I remember buying this record when I was about 21, brings back some great memories, like my older Brother and how he hated This kind of music, skiffle, rock and roll and was more like a clone of my parent's.
    Hard to imagine a time when most families didn't have a T.V, dad dug the garden in a suit and tie, mum would scrub the doorstep, grandparents were a product of the Victorian era and would shake their heads at the thought of going in a motorised vehicle.

    That brings back memories of the past from times gone by when being among the young ones. Many, many decades ago; then in the former divided city of Berlin, Germany, American Sector.
    Also because of the skillful lyrics once we made Skiffle music for real - we did it our way. In that respect, all of us guys were only "puttin' on the style", too.

    A greatly under-appreciated artist . Sadly missed . Ahead of his time : he missed out on the megabucks of the pop music boom a few years later . But super. Listen to his version of " 7 Golden Daffodils "

    • @SpeegBJ
      @SpeegBJ 3 роки тому +1

      Think about it; not so much under-appreciated. Maybe you just found out about him. But in his lifetime, he was an institution; an entire genre of music in one man! He was the most prolific recording artist in Britain before the Beatles. Extremely popular.

    • @adrinathegreat3095
      @adrinathegreat3095 3 роки тому +1

      Not really he had 3 no.1 Hits in the UK plus many other big hits from 56-62 and was the first British singer to have 2 us top 10 hit's, so he was well known and very popular across both sides of the Atlantic.
      Just about every major rock and pop artist to have emerged during the late 50s and early 60s credit Lonnie with being an influence on them

    I spoke to him just before he died. He was still performing and our company had sold him his promotional T-shirts. I asked him where a tiger's head was and he said 'Four foot from his tail'.

    I’m pretty sure that Elvis, as a young man had seen Lonnie’s style of singing. Especially the singing of this particular song 🎶, because no more than a minute or two into the song 🎶, Lonnie did a couple of moves with his legs that Elvis has copied exactly like the moves that Lonnie made.
