Yep, I really must try and get back into this. My daughters and I play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe every weekend. Think I’ll try and get them to give Aces a chance instead this weekend.
I've been playing it too. There are moments of inactivity, especially at night. Sometimes I just have to stop searching cos no one is online. But if you play during the day you'll likely find players, even if it is just the same 5 or so people over and over. In terms of content, there's actually quite a bit more now than at launch. The mini games at the end of the story mode are essentially 4 different modes and offer something to do. Ring shot also has various modes and unlocks, and you have the mini games (although they are locked behind Swing Mode which is just bad). But there's nothing particularly amazing there. It's just missing a few more quirky modes / mini games. Even the pretty poor 3DS game had a better selection of modes. It goes a long way in making the package feel a bit more meaty. Luckily, and I doubt many long time fans of the series would disagree. The gameplay is the best in the series, and there's also online (which performs very well), which in some ways adds more value to the game than some mini games which, let's be honest, you're not gonna play THAT much. So atleast the game gets the most important aspect down, and there is still a decent amount of content in the game. So I'm kinda torn on if it's the best in the series. (other than the handheld titles which are easily the best

Really good video! I more than agree. Mario Tennis Aces has become one of my favourite mario sports games of all time. The gameplay is just so addictive, i love competing in touranemts on the weekends. The storymode is also super great, especially the boss battles.

I saw your video on Twitter the other day of you playing as Pauline against Bowser and you’ve officially convinced me to rebuy Aces, I originally stopped playing after like a month of getting it on launch day because of how boring the character selection was but now there’s so many more to choose from.
In my opinion it’s like Fortnite. The people that still play it never stopped, and have gotten SO good that it’s useless to try to beat them when you want to just have a match and very discouraging
I have a shit load of games but this is by far my favorite for online game play, highly competitive if you make it to the A ranks. The "lack of content" doesn't exist if you actually try to get good at the game
I've been playing Mario Tennis Aces since launch and I've played a lot more recently since Mario Golf Super Rush was announced. Back then, I played a lot vs the AI just to get into virtual tennis shape but nowadays I play mostly on the Online Tournament mode just for Standard. Aces' gameplay has always been appealing to me because the features provide the unique feeling of playing a tennis game like a typical fighting game (meter, racket health, unique character traits & super moves a.k.a. Special Shots). Nowadays, the online playerbase is small yet filled with competitive and dedicated players, though I get a lot of Online Tournament matches during the weekends. In my opinion, Aces provided the best Mario Tennis experience for me since the past titles I ever played were Mario Tennis (N64), Mario Tennis Open & Mario Tennis Ultra Smash.
thank you for making this! i love this game so much and the little content is a lil dissapointing but i dont think it takes much away from how fun the core gameplay is!
Definitely not a dead game! Doubles Tournament is still active as well. My husband and I play Doubles a few nights a week. Always loved this series and this is a great game!
is there still enough online play to make it worth buying? i really want to play this but i just got my switch a couple weeks ago and wondering if its dead online
I love Mario Tennis Aces. It proper rubs me the wrong way when it gets lumped in with the other lazier Nintendo releases when this was such a high effort package that totally reinvented tennis gameplay and made something that really goes beyond just “sports game”. I wasn’t massively keen on the story mode but the huge fun of the actual matches infinitely makes up for that
I appreciate this review, because it draws a distinction between how much enjoyment you will get out of it without multiplayer. I'm just not interested in competing online, so it's good to know the Single Player isn't going to be worth my 40$ (on sale right now for Mario Day)
The racket breaking is what killed it for me. Its funny how the line,”Mario Tennis is a Fighting Game” is always used as a point for it. I love fighting games, in fact, its my favorite genre, but when I’m playing tennis, I don’t want to be playing a fighting game.
One of the things holding me back from getting the game was that I thought the online wouldn’t be too active , but now that I learned it’s still active, I’m interested.
It should be clarified that is ONLY really active for standard mode. Simple and Doubles are pretty dead. However, there are other avenues of connecting with people that you could consider such as joining the game's unofficial discord server.
It's funny you related it to fighting games because I knew of many people in the fighting game community that played this heavily for a bit after initial launch. These were people that I rarely saw ever mention Nintendo in most instances. I agree with everything about your assessment of content and the perceived value being situational. In my experience, people don't value competitive and solidly designed 1 on 1 multiplayer to the same degree as offline single player content like lengthy story modes or modes with RPG leveling elements. This is different from team based multiplayer or MMOs. My assumption is that people value the social aspects of larger groups as opposed to 1v1 being more individual driven. It works for Smash because Smash has a ton of ALL types of content, lol. Regardless, i see Mario Tennis Aces as being one of those entries that stands the test of time for competitors, unless a sequel has a similar level of depth in mechanics to keep matches interesting.
Tbh Jon I really liked tennis aces around launch but i kinda stopped playing it. I never picked it up again assuming it was dead but you convinced me to really hop back in thanks!

Gameplay wise aces is definitely best in the series. But content wise I still wish it had as much content as power tennis. But If I had friends over and could pick any mario tennis in the series to play with them, my choice would be aces.

My friends and I just got back into this game a week ago! Only played it for a little bit at launch and now I've already doubled my playtime. It's way better and more fun than I remember!
For singleplayer in sports/fighthing/party games I just want one thing: feeling of progression and variety. You can go various ways about this. Have a bunch of characters and stages be unlockable, give us a lot of challenges with checkmarks, reward you with stamps or other unlockables for completing courses with certain characters, actually having different modes that change the gameplay... The thing with story modes is that they're all about progression and variety so of course people crave them, but if they are over in a few hours and only serve as a tutorial with no extra stages or "replay all stages but harder/new twist" challenges, they can be boring. Something more meaty like Smash Ultimate's WOL would be better. It's basically why MK8 felt barebones to me without the DLC. You could only play those 8 cups in 150cc because the game would erase your 50cc and 100cc scores, and the unlockable characters were all Koopalings or clones, and not tied to any specific feats either so there wasn't any point to getting a high score. You had the staff ghosts too, but it feels like there isn't any point to them if you don't get anything out of it. When MK8D was announced to have everything unlocked from the get go I just couldn't care to double dip, no matter if they finally put more characters and battle mode. Sounds dumb but if it was like MKWii that had a license you could fill, I'll totally try to get it all to gold and beat all the ghosts.

I hate the solo player mode on this game. I miss the days when you had to earn the characters. Now everything is automatically unlocked from the beginning. I’ve barely played this game in the entire time I’ve owned it
Honestly like Mairo Party, it's more fun when you play with friends. Aces is a party game the story mode and unlocking characters was never the focus to begin with.

Man I hate golf but that game really grabbed me for all the work they put into it. Would love to see them revisit that formula for one of these sports titles but on the Switch.
I enjoyed this game since GameCube brings back the good memories I’ll definitely have to buy it for my switch
I think anyone who's made 100 hours in any video game should say why they enjoy the game. Awesome video!
3:38 UGH FINALLY. someone to prove that it’s not a dead game plus just because you don’t play it anymore or contend craters stoped making content out of that game DOSENT MEAN ITS DEAD 😭😩😩 period 💕
Underrated gem best game to play with friends very intuitive
There might be even more players online since this is on sale right now
I hate the solo player mode on this game.
@Wowzern8r I miss so badly how Camelot handled Mario golf and tennis. I badly miss rhe rog style elements
*Every time I see a new Nintendo Life video*
- Me: Please, be Jon, please be Jon, pleasebejon *while crossing fingers*
- Jon: HEY EVERYONE
- Me: YEAAAAAAAH
I picked it up again and I am thoroughly enjoying it. Very fun with family
What is after 4 years, is no one here going to talk about Yoshi's sad face/pose whenever he loses a match in the _Mario Tennis Aces_ video game???
3:57 The return of Giant Boss Hands.
been burnt out playing tons of switch games but i will give tennis aces a shot i do have a copy of the game lying in my box
New viewer here: This dude seems like a genuinely nice guy! Cheers 🍻
Fair enough. I literally have ZERO social media, never even had a Facebook account. Leaving a comment on a UA-cam video is as far as it goes for me!! From what I can tell it’s probably better that way!!! ;)
I love it roster & I am glad they added Pauline & this game has the best gimmick in the series. The single player & courts I did not care about but it gameplay is great.
Game is good
But the adventure mode is stupdly hard and unfair.
