Theme Song by Hello Control: bit.ly/hellocon...
We just saw a guy who introduces us to another guy who introduces us to yet another guy who introduces us to one of his scenes.
Nolan would be proud.
Daniel Ortega, I just read a comment from a guy who notes that we just saw a guy who introduces us to another guy who introduces us to yet another guy who introduces us to one of his scenes.
I have no idea who Nolan us.
@@bakedutah8411 Christopher Nolan made the dark knight trilogy, memento, insomnia, prestige, inception, intersetellar, doodlebug
Party Penguin, ahh; _that_ Nolan. Doi! 😬
He's the man sitting next to the man that's sitting next to the man that's sitting next to the man.
Fkin saul goodman
Excellent presentation. Clearly presented with an eye to expanding on what the 2 best experts on editing say. My only note would be to clarify that Walter Murch was presenting a top ten list for each single cut. The most important thing to consider at the cut point is number one. If any of the others are included all the better.
Read "in the blink of an eye" if you're interested in editing. Funny enough I always tried to find that book since film school. Never found it, but never made the effort to order it online or anything. That was 2002, 2016 I found it at a local chapters (I checked almost overtime I was there) FINALLY got it. Now in the time between I started to look for the book to when I found the book I was working as an editor on various different genres. Advertising, event, TV, documentary and film. Reading the book after having practiced the craft for way more time than when I was fresh in school really helped me understand the core concepts of this book on a 3D level. You know that level where you're just like "ya that's neat" but I can actually confirm the existence of these rules and the practice of say "thinking some shot on initial screening is useless - only to find out that later in the editing process that shot is exactly what the scene needs"...Anyway i'm rambling, but I love talking shop (editing specifically) so when I see something as detailed and high level as this vs "how to do a palm to camera lens transition in premiere" I tend to yak a bit more than i should in the comments ;)
I do enjoy your yakking
Our Favorite UA-cam channel 😍
Thanks!
Film Riot thanks for saying thanks. Over excited on your reply. 😅😇
The Filmage Agency same there great, but I think there's a pretty cool new start up channel about creating
Many thanks, I been tryin to find out about "videography tips youtube" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Piyason Videographic Ventures - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my buddy got great results with it.
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
This Guy Edits is a good channel if you want more good editing education.
The MZed plug uses the same stock music as an Audi radio spot running here (Toronto) right now.
This was the first time I watched a complete ad, at first I thought it’s off the topic, then I noticed I was watching your advertisement 😂 on your video.
thank you for sharing Ryan
I'm trying to apply these lessons to my vlogs.
Interesting tips really made me think thank you!
This helped a lot with my video game cinematics! Thanks.
great video
wanted this too bad!!!
Video starts at 1:22
Witi No it starts at 0:00
would that make it a CLOCKODILE?
Griffith didn't invent close up, it was invented by GA Smith
V good awesome video, man
In spanish is called “montage”.
Hi
Can u please explain the data management for film and how data while to transcoded and encoded without lossing any resolution
Hi film riot
Why can't they just put "Walter Murch: Six Rules of Editing" in the title description. If anyone is interested there is more to it like character development. Read the Blink of an Eye.
I'd edit out the first 1.30
Everyone should check out my "Welcome Home Irma Party" video.
COLBY Films sure !!!
audio is a bit crunchy. im suprised.
Please make a vid how to make a music video
H_Gamer they literally did exactly this
you may wanna go to aputure youtube channel or cinematography database. They share how to make music video with a different looks.
Hey does it matter what film I make for the contest?
We'll be giving all the details on the 18th.
Film Riot alright seems reasonable. Thank you for the reply!
good talk, but lack of visual examples :(
i felt so smart when i said zero and he was like "exactly" im paying attention in class!
HOOK HOOK HOOK HOOK HOOK!!
dude what is up with all the plugs in the beginning of the vid, its a 13 minute vids with the first 3 mins full of something totally off topic. ffs.
Editing is called montage... like in a garage fixing your car.
“Spatial” is spelled wrong in #6. He needs to make an edit.
Has anyone ever told you you sound like Hank Green?
But... Did you see the moonwalking bear?
He botched the Psycho thing, the knife actually stabs her one time.
🙏🌹🇮🇳 PSSPPP 🇮🇳 PALOJU JAI SRIRAM 🇮🇳🌹🙏
2019???
Check out my films for funny low-budget epicness!
Same could be said of the chainsaw scene from scareface in light of what hitchcock explains at the start.
Ryan: "so today we have Adam to tell us about cutting"
Adam: "so first we're gonna watch Hitchcock tell us about cutting"
Hitchcock: "So lets take a look at the shower scene from Psycho"
Tutorialception
JRinne Films assemblyyyy
JRinne Films Underrated comment
JRinne Films wow
Hitchcock: "You couldn't just take the camera and show a nude women stabbed to death"
Game of Thrones: "Hold my beer"
NickysChannel13 LOL
at least it was done in an impressionistic way just like he said
1:34 - 11:15 : normal talking dude
11:16 : ''Ifyoublnfilmakrantonverdmaindotkom..'' : Ryan Connolly
Surprisingly the auto subtitles are very accurate
it would be awesome if you guys challenged yoursleves to make a sketch with completley free stuff (software sounds ext.)
Captain Cheesecake great idea
Captain Cheesecake I bet you if they did, they'd use a $5000 camera
nano.on.piano.official perhaps but they have said it over and over you dont need to worry about your gear per say but worry about your story telling. They did an episode with an iphone btw
SWADE Productions yeah, I saw that. I suppose you're correct.
THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN!!!
I love the discussion of psycho, to use the audience's brains as another camera.
Imagine Alfred Hitchcock as a UA-camr today
it will be legend.
And he just does makeup tutorials
he would run away from bunch of youtubers trying to be entertaining. In other words he would stay very much away from the internet because seeing image getting overused would make him sick.
he'd start beef with jake paul
I'd watch it!
Watching a video of a guy showing a video of a guy showing a video of Hitchcock teaching editing through one of his movies.
HeSmile lol
the future of education
your profile picture fits perfectly with the comment
David Blagojević no
Should be titled, Walter Murch's 6 rules of editing. Because that was the whole video.
I would keep the "space dogs" and get rid of the "boy growing up".
new plot. boy grows up wanting to be a space dog and is then kidnapped by space dogs and boy realizes being a boy dreaming of being a space dog is better than actually being a space dog.
Leave the space dogs in. Otherwise that film sounds a bit dull.
If anything, it needs more space dogs.
Team space dogs
Yeah this was basically a 13 minute version of my semester long editing course lol
Good Stuff - It makes you think of how artistic film making has become. Once rules are made and understood you can then break them.
Fuck just about when i was going to sleep...
Arthur Syval same
Arthur Syval eh who needs sleep
TheMr Manav it was 11pm in france dude and I've got school 😂
Arthur Syval you should meet me when i have school..😁
TheMr Manav looool
Great stuff! Enjoyed the 6 items and have written them down.
+Marty Turner Right on! Glad it helped. :)
really helpful, me and my friend are going to make a post-apocalyptic short film !
This is probably the best episode this year. Thanks Ryan.
Inception moment: film riot talks about editing by going to professor talking about editing by going to vintage clip of Alfred Hitchcock talking about editing
Who disliked before watching wtf
E&Entertainment The evils
ive always wondered how they shot one of those shots in the shower scene. the shot where the camera is pointing straight up the shower. if you were to do this without anything, you'll end up with water drops on the lens. anyone got any ideas on how they did it?
camera covered in transparent protective material
Hitchcock was so very interesting. His interpretation of film edits is elequent to say the least. I love how he says "we can't just show a naked woman being stabbed to death in the shower". However, nowadays that's exactly what filmmakers show.
DigiFootage Channel nah, not really. Modern horror would just try the same thing but fail badly. The showing of what happens is more french extremism style imo
Great stuff. Hitchcock's presentation was kinda boring, but his message was great. Impressionistic approach. Love that. The 6 editing tips were also cool. Sometimes we get so caught up in putting in all shots we think are necessary without thinking of how it ties in with the emotion and story we want to deliver. Have to kill off ya babies sometimes, as he mentions :)
As for the montage / impression perspective, if something is larger than life then how can life possibly convey it? The imagination is required
May blessings shine upon you, just as you have blessed others. Have a wonderful Christmas!
Film Riot Aka Filmip Riot the 3rd aka Filmy Filmerson aka Two Connolly's walk into a bar aka knee slapper aka Riots in the streets of Chicago aka Fil-Ri
Thank you.
Hey everyone, we just released our first comedic sketch on our channel, and would love any and all feedback. Thanks for the support, and being a part of the film riot community.
I would be very happy to make a video about that - "How to build a computer for video editing" , as soon as possible.... PLEASEE
Over 1 min amd you still not at, what your title reads.. looks like you need to work on your editing
Excellent film information so much, I had to watch it three times! Thanks!
You mean editing isn't just cutting out the slates!??!?! ;) JK I know it's not, editing tv/doc/films for 15 years and that's the general job description from quite a few in the industry which baffles me. Editing being the final re-write of any film is a highly creative and complicated roll. There's reasons big directors have their "go to editors" ... short hand and creative simpatico/problem solving is essential...cause lets be honest, nothing ends up on the screen as it was written or in some cases shot.
Great content Film Riot...genuine and honest/informative.
If you've followed film riot for a long time and finally subscribe to domain.com, how bad would it be if you forgot to type in the coupon code filmriot?
Here's the gorilla video, guys. You're welcome. lol ua-cam.com/video/IGQmdoK_ZfY/v-deo.html
The guy literally says we don’t see the knife stab the woman in psycho then plays part of the clip with the one shot of her getting stabbed in the stomach. I can’t take what this guy says seriously, real editors would see that quick cut and know that she was stabbed on screen
Go through it frame by frame. You see the knife pass ACROSS the torso, but at no point does it ever penetrate the body.
2:15 Assembly. Isn’t that what the French term has always been? Isn’t that what Premiere Pro calls it?
That bear suit video is real and MIND BLOWING. If you are thinking "I would have seen the bear" ... you probably would not have seen the bear. It's truly an unbelievable experience.
Invenator? Man i really can't hear what you say in that advert, i mean it doesn't matter it's an advert but it bugs me. Useful video :)
Walter Murch's* 6 Rules for Cinema Editing
Damn, that's two weeks BEFORE I'm gonna be in Texas.
Even in 2021! This video is still helpful!! 🎥🎬
"MTV- awful people talking to each other" LOL
Ryan cuts to Atom who cuts Mr. Hitchcock who cuts to a woman in a shower.
That laptop guy presenting has got to be the single worst presenter ever, it's like he's deliberately trying to sound as boring as possible to annoy everyone
Kevin Deegan lol, reminded me of my old professor in my 3D animation class.
Thank you so much, this is so helpful for us.. i am so grateful to you, keep inspiring us..
Nice one, did i just watch a video with in a video within a video?
Cinema is a mosaic made up of time - Andrei Tarkovsky
Great for moviess, not so hot for a ten minute youtube video.
Does Film Riot reply if you are early??
No
Film Riot 😂
They are always good at responding to tweets *hint*
Film Riot darn I wanted a reply
I am missing the definition of cinematic...
I like movies with subtext, wiggle room for viewers' own interpretations but you can go too far too quickly when you strafe too far off from cinematic 'rules' of film making. The Babadook for example has the right amount of "vagueness" breaking with cinematic rules to get people to interpret the movie as they want. This french movie (and I love French cinema) called Evolution was far too open. Great cinematography and good ambience and even pacing but so much of the plot was left purposely untouched that you wondered what the hell you had been watching other than a great nature shoot of the South of France.
I generally don't like Hollywood movies because they are cinematic (as in over exposition making everything so dumbed down that it's just a pleasure ride) -- inserting that extra insert to really know who grabbed that gun and killed the person. Tarantino is far less obvious and cinematic -- I guess he's the mainstream of less cinematic movies. And that's only the beginning.
So cinematic in my definition is over exposition, very meticulous process of telling every nuance and plot point of a story with a steady, generally accepted pacing (this is subjective too and what was cinematic 20-30 years ago is now considered slow and old fashioned). "uncinematic" (if there's such a thing) is actually breaking with the cinematic 'rules/traditions' of over exposition and leaving things out or pacing them differently for a reason.
If you'd translate it to books than guess you could say that cinematic books are the Harry Potter series where loads of exposition and details are presented, uncinematic books are the Lovecraft books where you often wonder what has happened of what/who a character is; because they are purposely breaking 'the accepted' writing conventions.
Actually you can see the knife touch the lady in the shower, just right in the belly, if you slow it down and look closer at 4:14 you can see it.
How a movie is shot under 1/2 gb?
So we see a guy introduce us to himself, introducing us to a guy who then played a clip of Hitchcock and used Walter Murch's rules of editing??? Which was the original content again?
Amazing, the hitchcock's words are emotional. Thanks you So much. Hello From Argentina.
When u guys do episodes like this it reminds me of school days when the substitute teacher would just come and pop in a tape. Good stuff tho. MZed looks legit
Just a PSA that @timothyjohnaguilar will be winning the latest challenge you guys posted!! Good luck everyone else!
Cool Video! Do you have any advice for growing a channel I started a channel recently, I'd like to know if you have any advice for growing it.
I've been considering Domain.com for quite a while now, and I need a website up and running very soon.
In your honest opinion, what makes Domain.com better than SquareSpace, Wix, BlueHost, etc? (Yes I'm talking about those sites' PAID services)
How does a cut support an emotion or vibe? The other 5 rules are easy to understand but a cut that supporting viewers' emotion, how is this evaluated? By making a cut now or later, by changing a shot from here to there, how would editing support or say ruin an emotion atmosphere?
Nice lecture but no examples!! You must explain what you saying with examples.
as example you talk about some filmnakers breaking 180D rules now days, you must show examples from movie
I'm watching a video of a guy showing me a video of another guy showing me another video. I liked film riot when yall were doing diy stuff not showing boring film classes and expensive gear that I will never be able to afford.
Did you film your segment on the C200? Your vids are looking incredible these days; pitch perfect colour grading too.
Film Riot is our Digital University .always happy to see your Videos these are awesome Boss.
Walter Murch lists those editing techniques in the order of priority and less as rules. He himself says as they get lower and lower on the list, the 'rules' above them are more important. So Adam saying only the first one is important 'according to him' does not even make sense.
