Technically dear Rabbi they don’t use the term “mental illness” anymore in the mental health field (modern psychiatry does not use that term any longer). Colloquially it’s is still used but not professionally. Of course this is a completely separate thing than liberals trying to irrationally misuse pronouns. Other terms are mental disorder or psychiatric disability. The phrase is still used in legal discourse and it's probably the best term to use when trying to define if someone is either in danger or sound mind. However I can be more sensitive to other uses of the term in the future. Thank you for your comment.
