LEGO MINDSTORMS 51515 Review - Why LEGO 51515 May Be the Best Yet

  • Today's video is a LEGO MINDSTORMS 51515 review. LEGO 51515 is the long-awaited fourth generation of LEGO MINDSTORMS! The LEGO MINDSTORMS 51515 Robot Inventor is the successor to the beloved EV3 robotics platform. LEGO MINDSTORMS 51515 features an all-new set of motors, sensors, and the redesigned Intelligent Hub, as well as a new app-based programming experience that rolls building instructions and coding lessons all into one. The LEGO 51515 is the first LEGO MINDSTORMS ever to be programmed with Scratch or Python out of the box.
    LEGO MINDSTORMS 51515 Robot Inventor is certainly polarizing, as it makes steps forward and steps backward relative to the EV3, and some may see it as merely a LEGO Spike Prime reboot. In today's unboxing and review, I offer my thoughts and explain why I think LEGO 51515 may just well be the best MINDSTORMS robotics set to date!

    So good to see the return of my first robotics mentor. I can tell you, the more I have played with the Robot Inventor, the more I have liked it. So far the pros have far outweighed the cons with the set. I like to think I have only given up one port since I don't have to use one for the gyro, and you will find that it works much better. It never goes into drift. I look forward to seeing what you do with this new set.

    Hey ho! What is your opinion on using the Robot Inventor for education in a makerspace (not school with tight schedule)? I prefer the more complex models you can build with the parts of the Inventor. The spike prime models are quite simple to be able to build fast and the joy of building is missed... The inventor can use the firmware and software for spike right? Price wise is also better. I only need to sort the storage problem. Any ideas? Thanks!

    I miss charging the battery outside the hub. Sometimes you just need to quickly replace the battery with a charged one. And because of this, buying a new hub is pointlessly expensive. In EV3 it was possible to make various measurements, store data and later evaluate them in LabView. Nothing like this can be done in the new one. A big leap down at a time when there are a lot of cheap control boards like Raspberry PI, Arduino, etc. But your video is great :-)

    • @Builderdude35
      @Builderdude35  3 роки тому

      This is a perspective that I completely forgot to mention, thanks for bringing it up! The battery packs are at least interchangeable, but you are right that you cannot charge them separately from the hub, which limits what you can do with them. Great observation!

    I am a middle school teacher in Huntington Beach, CA and have been using the EV3 for the last 3 years with my robotics class. I know I can still use EV3 for a while. One thing I like a lot about EV3 is the app can be used on our student chromebooks. Is the Inventor app available on a chromebook? Also wondering if Inventor is better than Prime for middle school students? Seems like Prime is more geared to schools (as it is part of the education division) than Inventor (part of the retail division). Also looks like Prime is more suited for primary students (up to grade 5). I would appreciate your thoughts.

    I really like the rechargeable battery, absolute positioning, and the gyroscope/accelerometer. I do hope that daisy chaining could be added in the future though, as that would allow for more than 6 ports in complex models such as rubiks cube solvers. Also, do you think most people with EV3/NXT should upgrade to the Robot Inventor? For me, I probably won't get it right now, due to the limitations.

    • @Builderdude35
      @Builderdude35  3 роки тому

      Great points! I think most people who use the EV3 would be very happy upgrading to LEGO 51515. It's just a handful of people for whom the limitations (no daisy chaining) will be in issue, especially if they are used to massive projects with multiple daisy-chained links.

  • @269Katie
    @269Katie 3 роки тому +1

    One serious problem I've found with Spike Prime and Robot Inventor is that you cannot copy/paste or import/export between projects. If you make a MyBlock, it is only in the project you create it in. If you need it in another project, you have code it again from scratch. You also can't hide the MyBlock code. The only work around I've found is to scroll the screen and place the MyBlock source code way over to the side so that it is out of view.
    I've contacted Lego Education Support on this issue, but the more people that complain, the soon they might fix it.

    • @Builderdude35

    It's unfortunate they reduced the number of ports. Have been coaching FLL since the mindstorm days. Large improvement from mindstorm to EV3 because it supports 4 motors. A step down from EV3 to Prime because of the fewer ports. Typically most team robots use the max 4 motors and 2 light sensors for the best configuration. On EV3 they would use a port for the gyro leaving one port for some other sensor. With Prime there are no more ports, so any other sensor can't be used. Bummer.

      Give them Scratch and Pico-8. I'm a coding teacher, but I think the 51515 is best in the hands of 16+ kids, late high school, first year of college Mechanical Engineering. Especially the building/conceptual part is pretty rough for kids. Lego should really stop the fancy-pants looks of their kits, and set them in the market as young adult mechanical engineering design kits, like Fisher Technik did.

      I'm not familiar with the rules for FLL anymore (it has been a few years lol). Spike Prime is officially recognized by FLL in some regions, MINDSTORMS Robot Inventor may be too new to be recognized yet, so just double check the rules in your region. Seeing that Spike and Robot Inventor are very similar, I imagine it's only a matter of time before Robot Inventor is approved too. And if Robot Inventor is already approved in your region, I agree with Gavin Mann that Robot Inventor gives you a better value for your dollar and would be my choice for FLL.

      @Love made in Japan well 51515 comes with more bricks. And the 51515 comes with an extra motor instead of the touch sensor included with spike prime. The actual functionality is the same though. You can use spike prime motors and sensors. in a 51515 hub, just the colour is different in that sense - although there are a few differences

    Great builderdude35 and great robotics set. I just want to know could we use Robot Inventor for educational purposes. I have been ev3 mindstorm for 3 years, it has many instructions, but spike seems very easy to build, why they didn't make spike prime more challenging as robot inventor? Because if the spike prime is for classroms shouldn't it be more challenging, have difficult and interesting instructions? Is it possible to use Robot Inventor in classrooms as replacement for ev3 mindstorm than using Spike Prime? Is it possible? Is there any restrictions or any rules that this is only for playing at home? So it has also programming app, I think there shouldn't be anyproblem. If the LEGO company says that robot inventor for home everyone should use at home?why nobody uses Robot Inventor in classrooms, cause it has more things to learn. Don't you think it is more helpful than Spike Prime? And the company should put Robot Inventor to classroom,and spike to home, what is your advice? Could I use robot inventor in my classes and is it okay to use them in FLL and WRO competitions? Thanks in advance, I know too much questions, this is just my weakness to ask more questions)

      Hey there! I appreciate the questions! I think that Robot Inventor will be great for classrooms. In my opinion, LEGO's strategy is marketing Spike Prime for classrooms and Robot Inventor from home, but they are very similar products so you should be able to use one for the other and vice versa! There are no rules, so feel free to use whatever works for you! Robot Inventor doesn't have a curriculum that comes with it like the old EV3 used to, but of course, you always have my UA-cam channel as a place where you can get lessons for Robot Inventor! :) I hope this helps!

      Yes, of course it definitely helps. Thank you very much, but I think having about 900 details would be problematic in case of assembling the set after the lesson, and they release of inventor the touch sensor and motor if im not mistaken. Youre right it is just marketing they put one thing to education, another to home. So there is no exact perfect set.

      @@Builderdude35 my main question is another one. So as I said before So i I have been teaching with ev3 mindstorm for almost 3 years at robotics course, but now I want to buy robots and run my own small business, but I don't know which to buy. I really wanted to buy ev3 mindstorm education set, but they say that price is going up and I'm afraid about the future of ev3 and also new ev3 classroom. What do you think about the future of programming app, will it continues to work or will be obsolete?
      So i want to buy ev3, but the reality is that I should buy Spike Prime. But I don't like spike prime, I can't see it like the replacement of ev3, even it seems that wedo2.0 is better than Spike Prime. Because the Spike Prime looks very easy to build, it looks like you're building nothing. So my children audience should be like 6-13 ages ( used to teach these age group even ev3) and know after this it looks like I'm going backwards, because I think it should be very easy if not for ages 6-8, but for 10+it is easy. There should be more steps for building anything, but for spike it takes about 3 minutes to build driving base. Even the official lesson plans for spike is considered for 30-45 min, but I use to provide my lessons for 90-120 min. I don't want my lesson to look like only coding Scratch lesson. So what should I do? What is your advice to me? I'm wrong about spike prime? Maybe its better than I think? But there is no any other way than buying a Spike Prime, because Iam not sure about the future of ev3. I'm in a big dilemma. I couldn't to decide what to buy? Ev3 is what i want, the reality is Spike Prime, and wedo2.0 is also could be ok, but there also risk that they could stop selling them in some years like ev3 and it has problems with Bluetooth and etc, but plus is that there building instructions more challenging and it's already compatible with Scratch 3.0.
      Will be there a good instruction( more advance like in ev3) for spike prime? What is your advice for me? Almost 3 month i think about it.
      The problem is that I have a few money and I could afford for the first time to buy only 5-6 robotics kits. So I shouldn't make a mistake. Where to invest to me if my audience will be mostly 7-12 years old kids? To ev3, wedo2.0 or just make myself believe that Spike is best? Maybe there is another robots that I should consider for replacing ev3? Or how could you teach with Spike Prime for 90-120 min for a bit older kids like 10+, i want it to be or extended at least to 90 min just like in ev3, because most children also like building activities, but there is no good building plans and instructions with more pieces in one activity, coding is also good, but spike is build very quickly, I don't know how I would manage to provide 90 min classes with just quick building lessons plans for 7-13 years older kids. Please write your answer with arguments because your thoughts are very important to me and I think could really help to solve these dilemma🤔🥴🤯 ev3, spike or wedo where to invest my small budget in terms of Future and Quality lesson plans, not in terms of money. ( for 7-12ages) I know ev3 is pumping and very expensive.
      Thansk in advance.🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

      @@nasimikamilzada795 Regarding your questions about the software: I think the EV3 software is already obsolete, especially in comparison to the Scratch/Python available with Spike Prime. If you want to teach students coding that will help them in the real world, why not teach them languages that are used in the real world like Scratch and Python? I think Scratch especially is more intuitive, more approachable, and more relevant than the EV3 software.
      I personally don't see Spike Prime as a step backwards like a lot of people are saying. Spike Prime is definitely more advanced than WeDo and I think it competes on the same level as the EV3 in terms of skill expectations. You said your target audience is students 7-12 years old, which is exactly who Spike Prime was intended for. I shared a lot of my thoughts on this in the video, so I won't repeat myself here.
      A lot of you last concern seems to center around how long it takes to build the robots (if I understand you reasoning correctly?). The meaningful lessons with the EV3 never had much to do with how long it takes to build the base model, and the same is true with Spike Prim. The real learning happens when students explore building their own models or expanding on the base model and exploring the software. With that said, Spike Prime will be at least as good on the building aspect (LEGO is still LEGO) and it is worlds better than the EV3 on the software front; having Python integration means the ceiling of possibility is way higher than it ever was for the EV3. If there are ways to make a 90-120 minute lesson work with an EV3, it can absolutely also be done for Spike.
      I hope this helps!

      @@Builderdude35 thanks a lot, your advices definitely helps for sure. I have been following you almost 2 years, you are doing just professional reviews about robots and what I like most you're confident about your thoughts.
      Actually you're also right that my concerns are mostly about how to spend time more productively and about the time related to building instructions. I like Spike Prime, but maybe after 3 years of teaching Ev3 when I couldn't find more challenging robots with Spike just like how it was with EV3 and WEDO2.0, I think that Spike lacks in case of building different things( but you re right the pieces very similar). Maybe it will take some time in order enthusiasts like you explored Spike Prime deeper and find out more challenges about it, because now on the Internet is very small amount lesson plans, instructions and codes with Spike, I think this is because the Covid 19 came and lockdown of schools most teachers didn't buy them and couldn't improve Spike in the way of EV3 and WEDO2.0.
      Firstly I thought maybe Robot Inventor could be better in case of more pieces and cool robots than Spike cause when smth is built in Robot Inventor it looks more full like in EV3 than Spike.( but another thing is that Robot Inventor have lots of pieces and it could be problematic to assemble each time and also it comes just with cardboard pocket, not like educational box kit in Spike, this is also not good i think).Robots in Spike Prime looks less fully and takes a few time to build just 5-10 min, and in this case I should spend the rest of the lesson like an hour 15 min just by coding or adding some pieces to our robots, giving some tasks just in order to extend lesson, so it would be not natural extension of lesson, because in reality the lesson takes 45 min, and when I extend it to 90 min fictitiously it could reduce the quality of lesson, and actually i don't like to cheat and fool parents with their kids just because I can make some money.
      The problem is that I am not sure is it possible to give quality lesson with Spike Prime to kids between 6 -12?
      This my audience target. I know that it will be very good for ages 6,7,8 and even 9 ages, but what about 10-12? I am afraid robots could looked very easy to this older kids? Is there could be a bit more advanced robots( i mean just like EV3 official Driving base model with medium motor in the centre like in Ev3, cause it doesn't take 3 min to build it takes more time) in order to make my lesson both building and coding activities in the same level, and as a result my lesson wouldn't fictitiously extended to 90, they could look just like the real process with both building and coding activities for 90 min.
      So you have got Spike Prime as I'm not mistaken) For what ages would you use this robots? Does it suit in your classes( if you teach kids I don't know) to kids older 10+ years, let's say 10-13? Could they find it challenging a bit advanced than WEDO2.0? I mean what their reactions to Spike Prime? If ıt's very easy to build something in a few times for them, it could seems to the them not meaningful and they just will not want to continue attend lesson because they think it is easy for them and there is nothing to learn and find out about these robots, it's just psychology of most older kids, what can I do? That's why I'm sensitive about instruction parts, I have seen some older children that when they do something very easily, their ego says to themselves that you re not a kid, stop acting like a child , they want something more serious, otherwise they just stop coming to lesson.
      The question is that could I teach Spike Prime with 9-12 years old and do you do that also?( the Lego officially says that this is for kids between 12- 14 years old.)
      And do you think that Spike Prime is more advanced tool than WEDO2.0 just because of modern technology, new hub, improved sensors working?
      And what about Python, does it help in case of making some advance robotics coding activities just like in EV3, I mean does it have tools like mathematics block, my blocks, calibration and so on?
      Thanks in advance, hope you didn't get tired of my my questions but I deeply appreciate your advice and it really helps to come to conclusion🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
      I feel that I almost decide what to buy))
      I just want to be more confident about my decision.
