its because when your final gem gets into an empty space you get that gem and the other ones on the other side but there has to be a empty space where your empty gem lands and the space right next to it on the other side has gems in it

Alright so, if the last seed you drop drops into an empty hole, all the seeds in the hole across it will go to your point basket. :)
