For those interested in music details such as what is 'Madhyama Shruthi and Panchama Shruthi, read on: In the tutorial I gave using the keyboard, I explained the song in the key of 'C' and explained the notes in terms of Hindustani and Karnatic in key of 'C'. I didn't mention Madhyam Shruthi or Pancham Shurthi. We'll do that
in the next video tutorial as it is a slightly complicated topic.
When I played on Veena, since my Veena is set to 'Eb', Eb becomes 'Sa' and 'Bb' becomes 'Pa'. But I played the song, starting on 'Ma' which in this case is 'Ab'( or G#).
Essentially in terms of western music, simply put I played the song in key of 'Ab'. In terms of Western scale, we can at the most say that this is based on Dorian with lots of accidentals. ( Ab Dorian in this case).
Coming to Indian music, this song is considered to be in rag 'Gara' of Hindustani music.
Since raga is Gara and I played it in Madhyama Shruthi, it is like playing 'Madhyam se Gara'. Which note is Madhyam or Ma depends on where 'Sa' is. If 'Sa' is on C, F is going to be 'Ma'.
In case of my veena, since 'Sa' is 'Eb', playing in Madhyama Shruthi amounts to thinking that 5th fret of the first string on Veena as 'Sa'. Essentially calling 'Ab' as 'Sa'.
Why did I do this?. If I were to play this song by treating open first string 'Eb' as 'Sa' which is mostly how veena is played,I would have played the song mostly on bass string. This can sound muddy. It is not unusual for this raga to be rendered in Madhyam Shruthi (Madhyam se gara) or Pancham Shruthi ( Pancham se gara). 'Pancham Se Gara' would have been treating 'Pa' as 'Sa'. In case of my Veena, it would have been like treating 'Bb' as 'Sa'.
I would have started the song on 7th fret because first note of the song is 'Sa'. A video tutorial will help explain this better..
