I was literally just thinking about how useless it was going to my geology lecture and how I don't really retain anything from it. I will probably just start going through the slides myself instead to save some time.

🏫 im a p1 and personally I think it depends on how you use the lectures. I use them for active studying and create notes/connections during lectures instead of just listening and then I test myself afterwards. To each their own but I find that I don’t score as well on exams on my own but I also think it’s because classes enforce scheduled time (that I use to study rather than listening) whereas I would have to enforce my own schedule at home.

💻100% agree for lectures where all they do is talk. I'm very lucky in that my mandatory lectures are usually moderately interactive or labs. But for long theoretical lectures that are recorded, the 2X speed button has been my saviour! It makes a huge difference to use that extra time to pause the video, make sure I understood or rewind and then carry on. Otherwise I'd have the huge frustration of zoning out in a 2 hour lecture with no breaks and having to either wait for the recording and rewatch it or puzzle through the slides anyway. But I definitely feel sorry for the poor lecturer sometimes when only 1/3 of the cohort turns up...

my biology teacher (in pharmacy) gives us the powerpoint after she is done with the lecture and the syllabus is available after she has taught the whole course right before the exam period. The worst part is that we have to fill in the blanks in her syllabus otherwise it's unusable. The auditoriums are small so she also broadcasts her lecturers, records them then deletes them after 15 days.

I've been having the same issue with not registering information during lectures and having to learn them in my own time, but i didn't know how to work to actually SAVE time. I used to just skip the live lectures and watch them on double speed and annotating my slides as i go but that takes FOREVER!!! So thank you so much for sharing your technique, i will definitely be trying them out in this new year!! 😊

  • @irisanny27

As an online student, I lean towards both.
It really depends on how the teacher prefers to teach (or not in some cases), I really like going to lectures when the reading load is very heavy - just so I can get an idea of where to place my focus since my teachers do not go over everything that the book covers. I do watch all of my lectures now, but I had a teacher once who literally just read straight off the slides ... so I stopped listening to those and just read the slides lol
One of my teachers releases video modules every week, ranging from 3-5 short 15-minute videos where he sums up the main points of the week - then he has one discussion class where he goes deeper, takes questions, or just lets us discuss this week's topics. He's really become a school favorite "he was born to teach" kind of professor.

Hi Nathan! I just discovered your videos a couple days ago and I think I’ve binged all of them…twice lmaaoo. I just wanted to say I think you are an amazing person and I cannot express my appreciation for your content. It motivates me and lets me know that it’s ok to spend countless hours studying if it means it will improve your life/ career goals in the future. Everyone seems to just study for tests but since I want to be a nurse I use the material to better myself as a future healthcare professional and write stuff down I think I would want to look back on when I get to that point. You are such an inspiration and pure person and I wish I wasn’t in the states because I genuinely want to have you as a best friend lol.

OMG THIS IS SO TRUE!!!! I've been doing online school (I'm in grade 11) for about two years and in my second year I stopped going to school, primarily because I was lazy and the zoom sessions were tragically boring but when it came to my assignments and examinations I always got 60% + depending whether or not I've studied the material and shockingly enough when I was in grade 8 and the first half of grade 9 I was failing because class and my social life was extremely overwhelming. So 100% agree with you that going to class isnt necessary thats why this year I am more focused on how to perfect self studying. (sorry for the spelling errors or lack of punctuation, I was trying to listen and type at the same time)

Unfortunatly my lectures are required so I have to go but I completely agree with you I find that I have no idea what is going on in my lecture and end up going home to relearn the material. However, since I have to go to lecture I take the day before to go over the powerpoint in advance and make flashcards on Anki with the powerpoint slides so that when im in lecture its basically a review session and that has helped a ton.

I went to dentistry school in Chile, and most of my slides were photos and videos of procedures, plus one or two papers that we had to read before class.
There was no chance we were able to understand the content of every class unless we attended to them, because the theory wasnt enough to do well in the clinic.. maybe the difference is that my career is more practical (?). Or maybe we had too many crappy slides 😅. Saludos! 🇨🇱

I always check out if the lectures give extra information with the slides and the handbook. If they don't, I don't watch them, if they do, I first prepare the slides with extra information from the book, and then I watch the lecture recordings at 1.5 speed and just fill them with the extra information that's left. If they don't record the lectures, I go the first 2 lectures to see if they provide key information, if they do, I go or find someone that I know in the course to switch off who goes, otherwise I just skip it. It's not necessary to go if you're not an auditive learner I think personally

I need to show this to my teachers, literally.
Because what's funny is, that these last years they do no give us enought time between the end of lectures at class and the exam week. And since they see that a lot of students are skipping class (obiously to revise and to keep with all the lessons but also because of the wasted time in public transport and the tiredness that comes with it) Some teachers like to sabotage our exams by for example giving us extra hard ones and they say "It is our right to do so, because you are skipping class" (Since students used to say that it is their right to skip class because it is not obligatory)
