Track 4: Star Light Zone
This is the OST from Sonic The Hedgehog for the Mega Drive, released by Sega in 1991.
This game is notorious for showing th difference between the NTSC (60Hz) and PAL (50Hz) versions of games for older video game generations. - Ігри
When I was 12, I used this theme as an introduction of a ficticious radio programme, in which friends and me imitated famous people
that sounds hilarious
Welcome to Radio _____!
I'd love to listen to this weird little show.

There are some zone themes that I think probably sound better at full speed, but not this one ;) This was by far my favourite song from the game while growing up with the PAL version.
PAL is better
Night Levels are so 90s with all the Stars or City in the Background.
PAL version makes me in good mood.
As far as I know, only SEGA 8&16-bit games were really affected by this difference. I wonder why they never released a soundtrack in PAL version which, in SEGA's case, is so much better.
This is one track that 100% sounds better at 50hz. Total classy vibe.
The slower version is the winner here. The NTSC/60Hz version rushes the entire melody - it doesn't "breathe" properly between phrases, whereas this one is more nuanced and deliberate and has more of an implied bossanova feel. It's beautiful.
Only song that is better. I would eat at a fine diner listening to this.
This version sounds much more chill than the faster paced version.
Us poor PAL folk stuck at 50hz, but this track is definitely IMO much better slower
I choose to boot my Mega SG in PAL mode now, can always switch over if needed I guess!
Yeah, I prefer the PAL boss theme, and starlight
S O N I C W A V E
Seriously though, this sounds really good.
Holy crap Europeans got the a e s t h e t i c version of Sonic. 50hz version (PAL) sounds great because it is kind of peaceful sounding. 60hz (NTSC) is better because it actuallly fits a Sonic game because it actually feels like a nice quiet but busy urban city with a lot going on.
NTSC players got the classic, fast sonic experience.
PAL players got the calm, relaxed sonic experience.
60Hz is worse you mean! For Starlight anyway.
As a UK/European player, I say that this sentence fits perfectly, and is fully correct
@@joshuawynne329 crazy how just slowing the song down a bit can have such a big impact on the song's mood

This is the version I remember as a kid, and I’m glad it is so
Same here!
Me too!
Even though I’m not over 18, I love playing retro games, and as I’m from UK, I’m used to PAL version!
because sonic Mega Collection uses pal pitch for their roms, I grew up with this one, although it was at the normal NTSC speed
This is the only track in the game that really benefits from the slower pace. This and maybe Spring Yard Zone. The rest sound better faster.
rmh032 I believe also Marble Zone gets a fitting darker mood thanks to the slower OST
And boss theme. special stage but not green hill.
I feel the opposite, I much love this slower paced version.
Why don’t you reply instead of randomly commenting

is this what a fever-dream sounds like?
It's so nice, it makes me tired. Always love these kinds of groovy songs like this.
Thumbs up if you searched for this because of somecallmejohnny
I liked really this music, when I heard on Mega Drive. I like Golden Axe too!
Man it's so chil at this speed.
I was listening this the whole time, I didn’t expect that Star Light Zone sounds so good and peaceful in the Pal Version. I think it sounds much better than NTSC version.
If you don’t understand what I'm saying, it's because of my bad english, sorry.
I remember and know about the PAL version being slower than NTSC but haven’t heard the PAL version in years.
I didn’t realise the difference in playback speed was so stark compared to the NTSC version. This almost sounds like it’s slower than I remember it being, which is saying something.
Play this at 1.25x speed and it sounds like it did at 60hz.
0.25 times is an actual treat 😂
😂
Different refresh rate may affect the processor thus giving slower music? Dont know. Not to familliar with the Mega Drive technology. This track is much better at this speed.
There was no engine, it was all written in assembler code ;-)
Fantastic Furry same difference :P
I don't know why it was the case. All the other Sonic games ran at the proper speed.
@@rmh032 Probably just something the devs didn't take into account. Yeah, since the Japanese and NTSC versions run at the same speed while PAL is 16.5% slower because European plugs output at 50hz.
City Light Zone:)
no, Shell Scaffolds
Maybe I have some other slow version of this game, but the tone of this music is very different from the console version!
Use_ R23812 its directly from the console itself :)
Then, probably, I have some other 50Hz version
When was the last time you played?
I have Sega Mega Drive 2 console and built-in game Sonic the Hedgehog 1. This game I have is slower than NTSC version. I played it 2 hours ago
Ah. Maybe there is a difference between those then.
Dude, it's the same song, 'cept it's slower.

?
This sonic is 1991
So is the NTSC version basically just Star Light Zone Nightcore?
Im
1.25 Normal Speed
nope, 14% speed
@@ViewpointProd No, I was talking about how you can get the original speed from the NTSC version. But you are right about the speed here.
This song sounds like sonic is running in mud
I don't know how you Europeans were able to cope with sonic 1 at 50 htz. But, kudos for doing so.
I WANT TO GO FAst, NOT slOW wHY SEga WhY!
MsNeku12 sega isnt the one to blame for, its the fault of the fkn European slow ass 50hz TV
no its not that it cant process it fast enough, its that the fps is lower than ntsc, and there fore the game needs to be sped up to compensate, which sega did not do
The whole point of the game is the fast speed of it. The U.S. music adds to that feel.
@JChronic : o
Yeah, but starlight seems superior in PAL tho
