Even more impressive was that when Celtic Frost approached HR Giger they were still the fledgling band hellhammer. They were teenagers but they took the time to write Giger and communicate to him their long-term goals, their thoughts on the art and the interplay of the Doom between Visual and audio mediums and how they felt nothing else would convey the visual element they needed better than his work. They had no money to pay him, they were living in a nothing town in the Swiss mountainside.. they had no reason to believe Giger would take them seriously but he did. And the rest is history the band became the legendary Celtic Frost and this album art is genius.
Fact: Dead's family wishes for people to stop sharing the Dawn of the Black Hearts album cover. His brother, Anders, said that. I am with Anders and Dead's family on that. I do not like Euronymous for multiple reasons, and that album cover is one of the reasons. It is so disrespectful to Dead and his family. I have heard that Euronymous was not nice to Dead. I have also heard that Euronymous was not nice to other bands, as well. R.I.P., Dead.
I think you’ll love cattle decapitation. They’re development from Humanure to death atlas has been outstanding. Can’t wait to see a possible reaction to their library here
Regurgitate - Someone once listed them as one of the 'Big 5' of Goregrind alongside early Carcass, Haemorrhage, Dead Infection and Impetigo iirc. Definitely one of the bands to check out if you're exploring that genre. Lord Gore - Another band well worth checking out, along with their side project Frightmare. Guitarist Maniac Neil has a band called Blood Freak. As far as Goregrind album covers go, photos from crime scenes, accident scenes or autopsies are a staple of the genre. I think I've seen an album cover featuring a guy who's waist deep in a Muffin Monster style grinder.
Oh yes of course the infamous Mayhem - Dawn of the Black Hearts bootleg released in Colombia in 1995 after Euronymous send the photo to a guy named "Bull Metal" that released it on his label "Warmaster Records" and NOT Mayhem as some people still believe, the actual music (concert with vocalist Dead in Sarpsborg, Norway) has been official released as Live in Sarpsborg with new cover. R.I.P. Per Ohlin Aka Dead
About Mayhem. You can watch pretty much any documentary on norwegian black metal and you will get the story. I think you should include them on the show since they are a cornerstone of black metal. I personally recommend "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas". It's their most classic and talked about studio album and it's also their best without any doubt!
I think the only covers that sometimes 'get' me are the ones featuring real photos, like the Mayhem or Last Days of Humanity records mentioned here. Some other (probably worse) recommendations. - Venetian Snares - Horse and Goat (the only one that's not real, but this is as fucked up as drawn album covers get) - Pissgrave - every album, I think Posthumous Humiliation is the most disgusting - Big Black - Headache (original version) - Vomir - Untitled (bit difficult to find since seemingly 100 albums by Vomir are called untitled, but I think it also goes by No Entertainment). - About every gorenoise cover ever. I have to give an extra warning for the last two, really only look them up if you can stomach almost everything. Also I wouldn't search for the last one too often since I'm really unsure about the legality of it. - Numeronean - Home - Smell & Quim - Jesus Christ
I bought Stop at Nothing and Destroy the Opposition by Dying Fetus at Best Buy back in 2003. Best Buy carried a lot of death metal and other metal genres back in the day.
you have to look at the story of Mayham. They were a crazy band. They burned down churches and One of their bandmembers stabbed the other one 26 times in the back neck and head. They were insane. Watch the movie Lords of Chaos
I love that you really take time to discuss everything in your videos. You should definitely listen to Deicide, they’re a classic Old School Death Metal band with lots of amazing songs like Walk With the Devil in Dreams You Behold, Repent to Die, When Satan Rules his World, Fuck Your God and The Lord’s Sedition
The first time I saw the cover from Last Day of Humanity Hymns of Indegestable Supuration scared me until this day, but knowing is a real photo makes it even scarier!!!
Metal is hard to explain. They are usually very nice people. Metal mostly either pokes fun at the dark stuff or uses it as a metaphor or mostly is a criticism of the dark. They are like disillusioned hippies which explains the long hear
Not an album cover but the Dead Kennedys record Frankenchrist included a poster of HR Giger's Penis Landscape painting. They got sued by the PMRC in the 80's because of this and were nearly driven to bankruptcy.
I have a Cannibal Corpse poster in my bedroom. It's the Kill cover. I tell my daughters i want to look just like him. They are like ."dad!!!"..hahaha!😂
The story behind the Beatles butcher cover goes deeper and there is an explanation for it, albeit not as exciting or scary. The American record companies would take British catalog released Beatle records which were most often 14 tracks and split them into two albums and add random singles not originally on the albums thereby making two 10 or so track albums and including songs recorded years apart which was not representative of the Beatles true artistic output, this infuriated the Beatles and made them even angrier when American record label Capital Records demanded photos for album covers for these albums they considered a butchering of true Beatle albums, therefor as a joke, they did this photoshoot and sent it to them. Before the record label realized it was satire, they printed 300 copies of it and shipped it out. Hence the rarity and the controversy. The Beatles never intended or expected the record label to actually distribute it. That's the story I heard from someone.
19:50 "A spoken word/instrumental record". That was the most disturbing part of the entire cover. I see the term "spoken word" and I run away in terror. (This was a joke post, I actually saw a Henry Rollins spoken word show in 2010)
I have Butchered At Birth original press, last days of humnaity hymns of indiegestable supouration, Disgorge she lay gutted on cd's. Also about Mayhem's Dawn of the black hearts the bootleg is printed illegally since it was not aksed about the band's permission. On Cd is not that expensive but the Vinyl is.
