I think I can help you. I have really thick hair. The best advice from me to you is to go shorter. Short hair + Thick hair = AMAZING volume, and it still stays up all day. I could be doing anything and it will stay up. Sweat, rain, anything. It helped me a lot. About 2.5 inches is what usually do. Sometimes 3.5 if I know I'm getting another cut soon. Oh, and you absolutely need to find where your awkward stage is. Once you know where it is, you can easily decide how long/short you need it. Hope this helps!

I definitely rock the messy look more, almost everyday in fact! my hair doesn't take much to put up so I enjoy the more casual look :)
