I sent this to one of my band mates. Here was his reply: "Hysterical. This is what my wife hears when I put on jazz. I'm going to play this for them later and tell them it's the masters at work."
I love how it starts off being subtly bad with the timing on the melody and some bad notes in Mile's solo and then Coltrane's solo just goes to SHIT. Also those hits over the piano solo jesus christ. This is brilliant.
As a successful musician of some 40 years, I have to congratulate the person that overdubbed the shreds. Very seamless and well done to the point most non-musicians would never get it. It takes a lot of talent to pull one off as good as this!
Oh God, this is comedy gold. The overdub for Coltrane was hilarious and I was in tears with what the horns were doing doing during the piano solo and the drums at the end.
Contrary to what Charles Liles has said, this is a very good attempt at perverse, sophomoric humour (excuse the spelling, I'm British). I too am a sax player, and I can't play anything Coltrane played, and haven't tried, but I do know how to laugh. It would pay some people to remember this is what jazz sounds like to those who don't like it! One of the best shreds (and THE best jazz shred) on youtube.
This is so great! Much respect to the guys who played the recording. You must have put a lot of effort into it. I was suprised to hear so many original Miles Davis licks screwed up in the ending of the phrase. The trumpet player even managed to copy Miles sound. Also I think it must have been really hard to mess with the time like drums and bass do through the whole thing. Even the sound of the recording is quiet close to the original. I laughed out loud several times! Thanks you!
Hahaha, 03:30 onwards is the best part if you have watched the original (which most of us surely have). All those cats in the background, amazed and even in awe because of that WODDY WOODPECKER lick at 03:42, hahaha. Kudos to the musicians who recorded this, they did their homework. And the trombone section near the end! Shit, I'm dying, hahaha xD.
When I was a college freshman my friend George (exchange student from Taiwan) I and were invited to a professor's home for Thanksgiving. After the meal we all sat in the living room. He pulled out a vinyl LP and put on Coltrane. Sitting smugly in his chair, with a pipe in his hand, he looked at us seriously and said "Boys, this is Real Music!" George and I just looked at each other, said nothing and smiled back at our prof host. We were driven back to campus 20 minutes after that.
One of the few masterpieces within the world of "shreds" videos. Bravo! Learn from this, you silly buffoons who assume all parody must slap you hard across the face with enough force that even your grandchildren clearly understand that it's parody.
It's phenomenal, I think they are playing how they feel, I guarantee they know what they are doing, even if they don't care what anyone thinks, it's original.
The "Woody Woodpecker" quote in Trane's solo is funny, but thebest part s the rhumba trombone section on Mil's second solo. Great writing (love the street whiste!)
Pain in my stomach from laughing. A real Master piece shred. That puzzeled face of Miles when joining in to the piano "grooves" well done man, really LOVE this
So this is a shred. Man I was confused for a bit. The horns came in rushed, I was like is that me or what?? Then Coltranes solo, I was blown away how off it was. This is really good lol!
I am sitting up here DYING!!! WHAT THE HELL WAS THE COMP BEHIND THE PIANO SOLO ABOUT?!?! LMAO!!!! And then when it went into another song for no reason at all . . . this sh*t is genius!!!! I needed that laugh!
I've been playing the tenor for God knows how many years now, but this Trane's shred here is about a hundred times more inventive playing than my sax miscarriages for So What haha
wow. Miles's part was actually believable, and Coltrane's was so ridiculous that it actually was also pretty believable to me lmao
It took actual musicians to pull this off, this is brilliant.
High level musicians with incredible sense of humour.

I thinks actually an early example of trane delving into his deeper tones
As a successful musician of some 40 years, I have to congratulate the person that overdubbed the shreds.

Sorry to say, it sounds like some gigs I have played, myself
@@williamwinslow6582 I think that's the joke
The beginning the horns are rushing their hits hahaha
Abram Olivas irony level: master
no way
It’s Miles’s quintet and tune so he was probably trying to signal he wanted it a bit faster
they wanted to go home soon
@@Yetipfote HAHAHA
Finally a shred not totally overdone. I could play this at a Friends hpuse and they would totally believe it
"Finally" isn't quite the right word here, since this has been around for 10 years and was one of the original shreds.
miles was so close to playing the lick at 1:00
We have been cucked
In The Kind of Blue recording he actually baits the lick at 3:10.
Oh God, this is comedy gold. The overdub for Coltrane was hilarious and I was in tears with what the horns were doing doing during the piano solo and the drums at the end.
Loved coltrane's quote from spiderman at 3:53!!! brilliant playing im speechless
And also WoodyWoodkeeper's theme at 3:42
Cheeky wee 'Ipanema' around 2.20 ;)
@@leonmarquezortiz9502 - *Woody Woodpecker* not *Woody Woodkeeper.* But Thanks alot. That went over my head. 👍
That is correct, Woodpecker!
Coltrane's sideslipping was way ahead of his time. A true legend.
I'm in TEARS over the horn backgrounds in the piano solo
3:41 Plays Woody Woodpecker, Miles whispers, "Woody." LOL.
The sax solo makes well use of polyrhythms and atonality
It takes a wise man to play the fool.
The title cards are what get me.
"Directed by... Wingo Staww"
Dead giveaway right there ... probably not even noticed by most - One of the funniest things on this video right there, those names!
Come on, beginning of Miles' solo is one of the coolest I've heard :o
its the start of the original solo
Contrary to what Charles Liles has said, this is a very good attempt at perverse, sophomoric humour (excuse the spelling, I'm British). One of the best shreds (and THE best jazz shred) on youtube.
Coltrane’s woody woodpecker impression almost made me choke 😅
LOL In this shred John Coltrane imitates the female mallard duck perfectly!

Love how sharp Coltrane is, for those who get the joke.
It's like Sun Ra at the end
I really believed the miles part for quite a while
Absolutely brilliant!!!! The timing is impeccable and clearly the musicians doing the shreds are dynamic musicians! Bravo!!!!
Holy shit.. funniest thing I've seen in ages. Thank you to whoever did this.
This is genius, one of the best shred videos on the web
It becomes technically a free jazz version of So What. The beginning is obvious but becomes almost actual free jazz.
yeah!
Is it weird that I’ve listened to so much avant garde music that I like this unironically?
Hahaha, 03:30 onwards is the best part if you have watched the original (which most of us surely have). the guys grooving in the background around 3:40 made me snort-spit my coffee.

This is the superior shred. It is art itself.
This spoof is so good, it's scary. Scary as hell!
Its shredding for connoisseurs of shred.
And you can really see where Zappa and Phil Glass got their ideas.
That horn section and after that Mile's second solo backing x-D Love it!
Miles's solo was genuinely believable.
3:53 favorite quote
You do understand that someone overlaid audio, right? That is not the real recording, but it was parodied amazingly well.
The Drums that starts at 8:13 and just descends into a rock and roll groove haha wtf
A rare example of Jimmy Cobb pumping up some old school R&B [timing a little off that night though ... 😎]
the horn comps behind the piano solo are my favorite lol man they are tight together
Woody woodpecker at 3:43!
I think you can actually hear someone whisper "Woody?" a couple seconds in...
Look, whoever the"shred" people are they are the funniest mf's man. You have to be able play to mess it up so bad. Keep um coming if possible.
A+ trolling
One of the few masterpieces within the world of "shreds" videos. Bravo!

I want to show this to my friends but I don't think anyone would get the joke haha.
...and judging by the intonation on the bass- I'd swear it was Ron Carter!
too much work went into this video, it almost sounds pretty believable for a bit there.
truly the giants of the jazz world, masters of their instruments
2:20 the freaking girl from ipanema quote, I’m dead 😂
Can't believe I hadn't discovered these shred videos before!
Love the hits during the piano solo!
This is the best thing ive ever watched on UA-cam ever OMG mane more please
I love how fucking sharp Coltrane is holy shit just like the old daya
Best Shred Ever....... Absolute Genius!!!! Well Done!!!!
Love drums at the end
The whistle at 6:59 makes my day :D
actually thought that was miles for the whole solo. whoa.
I never thought I'd hear Wynton Kelly do a Sun Ra imitation
Now you know why they call Coltrane King!
The Shred Grand Prix.
Outstanding!
best shred i've ever seen!
The whistle at 7.00 - class! I laughed out loud at that one!
You have to be quite good to be this good at being bad.
It's phenomenal, I think they are playing how they feel, I guarantee they know what they are doing, even if they don't care what anyone thinks, it's original.
4:04 i'm dying shit
+TheEpongeMan Did you hear all those duck calls? :-D
[ERIC DOLPHY INTENSIFIES]
The "Woody Woodpecker" quote in Trane's solo is funny, but thebest part s the rhumba trombone section on Mil's second solo. Great writing (love the street whiste!)
3:42 Woody Wookpecker!!!
This is so funny! That solo by Coltrane is genius, you just know some people will think "yeah thats jazz, they can't play" LOL!
Pain in my stomach from laughing. A real Master piece shred. That puzzeled face of Miles when joining in to the piano "grooves" well done man, really LOVE this
That is one of the funniest things I've ever heard.
A tribute to the versatility of these talented musicians.
You have to know the actual performance really really well to be able to spoof it so convincingly.
Chris Dave on drums at the end.
Fantastic! Among the shredders you rule all-time.
So this is a shred. Man I was confused for a bit. The horns came in rushed, I was like is that me or what?? Then Coltranes solo, I was blown away how off it was. This is really good lol!
The horn backgrounds during the piano solo are actually quite haunting.
Wow, that went downhill quick!
Hahahah the trino at 3:34, best part of Coltrane solo. Hahahahhaa, from the piano solo to the final it's incredibly hilarious.
I am sitting up here DYING!!! WHAT THE HELL WAS THE COMP BEHIND THE PIANO SOLO ABOUT?!?! LMAO!!!! And then when it went into another song for no reason at all . . . this sh*t is genius!!!! I needed that laugh!
the coltrane's entry it's something really fantastic
2:21 The girl from ipanema
Hahahahaaaaaa xD that latin feel at the end. They fucked it up so smoothly. Nice boys
I think my favorite part is the hip-hop beat the drummer does at the 8:05.
Drums near the end :')
I can smell them butter notes!
OMG this one goes further than any I've seen before!
Is it weird that I actually digged the end of Coltranes solo? I'm a jazz guitarist, so... crap...
Sure you're not a drummer?
Brilliant! Congrats, guys. The change at 6:40 is pure genious!!!
I've been playing the tenor for God knows how many years now, but this Trane's shred here is about a hundred times more inventive playing than my sax miscarriages for So What haha
Sounds a lot like an infamous saxophonist I played with last year in NYC...
This is a top 5 shred 😂
You have to be really good to play bad this well.
The truck horns beginning at 4:10 are sublime.
That's strong bass.
I lost during the piano solo 😭
THIS IS A NIGHTMARE
THIS IS AWESOMMMMMEEEEEEEEEE!!!! YEAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!! I"M LAUGHING SOOOO HARRRRD FUUUUUCCKK!!!!!!! AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
wow, such a fine line
Brilliant! Congrats, guys.
Crying with laughter here. brilliant.
