Thank you for the video. Motorcycling should be a fun and efficient means of transport. Sadly I lost two friends to motorbike accidents when I was young. I rode bikes off-road, which was much safer. After my friends died, I never took to the road. I hope that any one who watches this video learns from it. All the best. Andrew
riding a bikes 3 years now,and I only discovered this great technique... feel much more confident and honestly going through the bends and twisties much more quicker...
I got knocked off my bike (London) a little while ago by a motorist whom hit me from behind...I did not stand a chance; I have decided never to ride a motorcycle again as I simply no longer trust motorists! But the motorcycle police who were in attendance in response to my being struck by this car, were absolutely brilliant...the very personification of Professionalism. Motorcycle police are literally in a league of their own,- and I have nothing but the deepest respect for them. Great vid. Ebs
You're quite right, for normal riding he is very close, but one of the reasons is that he is trying to find out what the rider is doing. He is looking at the rev counter and the speedo and figuring out what gear he is in. they are very good at what they do.
I spoke to two owners from videos, and both confirmed that while they didn't feel that it was a big problem, both had experienced it at various speeds, and yes, it annoyed them. The problem is not isolated, and not related to a special swing arm, but more widespread. Personally, as a mechanical engineer, I believe it to be related to the harmonics of the bike a whole, and until they change the "harmonics", by making a change, it's not going to go away. Those harmonics can be weight too.
Pretty good ride all in all.Bearing in mind they are under supervision and the mistkes they make main one being position 5 to on comming traffic would be commented on in debrief. Progression is the key with safety being paramount at all times. Remember these officers are not grade one in this clip( with the exception of the tutor) they are training.
Somehow I just ended up here again having watched this vid a couple of times before. I just noticed that this is the road out of Bala. I went there last weekend and took the same route (from the lake up the A5 all the way to Telford, then down through Kiddie and Worcester). Weird! Great roads though.
erm no, what i have been saying is the most logical and sefest way of riding. the number of time we are told to slow down, so make use of slowing down and reduce danger - like i said you come across some gravel spread across the road surface at 60 you end up on the rong side of the road, even at 45 by the white line you will kissing some ones front grill, pulling in a little tighter give you more space to play with without increaseing danger by reducing speed. safe riding is about reducing risk
I like this video. It gives a good indication on safe path to follow on the road. I mean: it's not the classic Outside-Inside-Outside. It looks like always staying on the outside of the curve and when the exit is in sight, countersteer more and accelerate. Am I right?
Thats the Bala to Corwen road in North Wales, its a good ride, there are some fantastic roads around there, you get lots of "hero's" from the cities visiting and often dying, a few years ago i remember in the space of 2 weeks there were 8 fatalities in this area, thats why the cops train around there, but yes they do hassle people over plate size etc trying to keep the numbers down
That looked like a nice steady sunday ride, Do you have to do track riding and ride fast when learning this as a police rider or is this about the speed that you go even when in a call.
staggered formation works fine on a typically straight wide American road for posing CHiPs riders. Its use here would mean that two of the three bikes would be in an incorrect line/position on bends.
Their road position is inch perfect. Any advice on how to hold your line better in the corners and even on approach? I've read that pressure on the pegs helps.
No mate, national speed limit varies depending on road and vehicle. Dual carriageway national speed limit is 70mph for cars and bikes, but 60 for lorries. On single lanes it is 60mph for all vehicles. I take cheques or paypal ;)
I should have noted that Police riders do give up a left of centre position for large vehicles in order to present themselves to other vehicles trailing the large vehicle coming toward.
It is interesting to see the police instructor holding position left of centre with vehicles coming toward. The IAM advocate (in the main and with due consideration to road condition etc etc of course) a centre of lane position for this situation. I have noticed this road position in other you tube films. I wonder why when the IAM basis its study book on the Police Roadcraft Manual, does the it have a problem with this road position?
@HolyFuckinShitBatman A couple of times when I've been out on long training runs with trainees almost ready to take their IAM of RoSPA tests, I've had the good fortune to trip over some coppers training, only to be invited to 'take part'. The feedback was always first class. As you'll have noticed yourself, it's easier for bikes two or three to make progress because the firsts one alerts the car drivers. Four or five in bright yellow hi-viz certainly wakes them up. Usually!
@Limpandtotheleft I use that road weekly and that corner does indeed have very very good visibility for such overtakes so that particular one was not a problem. The earlier one where he had to cut in as a white car came from the opposite direction was however at best scruffy
I've heard the stories. As far as my research can determine, the police models a while back used a different swing arm mount that had a potential to loosen. The guesses I read about suggested that may have been the root cause of the high speed instability. I haven't spoken to or exchanged messages with anyone that has experienced this when running on a properly tuned suspension and good tires up to ~125 mph. ~135 mph is ~max I think.
Hi. great video i like the guy on the black bike overtake the police on a left hand bend i love to hear the police coms conversation at that point haha
P.S. This bike isn't for me after talking to two separate owners and reading some research that a high number of owners had experienced. I wanted the bike for reliability, but one other factor of the bike that I don't like, is it's annoying whine. I have since sold my BMW K1200 GT and bought a 2010 Kawasaki Concours. I love it.
Can anyone please tell me about this much talked about "weave" or "pan weave" that I have heard so much about. I've read that the Honda ST1300 was banned from being used in England because of a death when the bike began to violently weave at high speeds. I like the bikes styling and reliability. Please respond with a REPLY.
can advancebiker, tel me why i find a sharp left hand up hill turn , from a stop,in fist gear on , my st 1300 , a nigtmare, help as i have to do this turn every day, and nearly droped the bike lots of times, help!
@artespan I believe every police rider is excellent, given the fact that they have to master both the bike and the police duty. They cannot let inperfections in the way, methinks.
WOW!, great info Mate. Seems like other bikers aren't bothered by the Police riders eh? (2:37) the sportbike zooms by as they tend to do, is this zone 60kph? And have you ridden in the US, is it to much of a switchover lane wise? One more quest. Lived in SW Wales in the 80's,(Brawdy/St.Davids.) & on me bucket list to return & rent a touring bike to see Wales again, any suggestions? Bikewise/Best rentals?
32 seconds in a rider has his flip lid open wen riding. wot type of flip lid is it? was it tested to ec22.05 or Bs 6658:1985 wen open ? if not the rider should be geting 3 points and a £30 fine for not wearing a helmet leagel for uk road use
when you stay tighter the idea is to go slower which give more time to react. i came across gravel spread acrossthe road surface today, midway through a left hander stragnely enough - it was hard to control at 45 but had i been out by that white line i would have been in the oncoming trafic lane. oh an i didnt mean you appexed corners i just meant its not a good place to be. i people corner cutting all the time where i live
OK fair enough. Pilots are pretty good at terse radio messages and probably suffer similar r/t blips but I've never heard the same technique. Better safe than sorry though so fair point.
@Limpandtotheleft Sure but that doesn't have any effect on oncoming traffic around a blind corner. It is a clichéd biker view that all motorists are asleep and not paying enough attention, but the truth of it is bikers are sat higher up, have a better view and far more power and it often makes them forget their limitations. They're rarely as visible as they think especially sat tailgaiting in a blind spot waiting to overtake.
@Crinkleduster The police didn't overtake on blind bends, and you might need to have some regard for the effects of the camera lens on distances. Now, really dangerous was the guy in black. Twice. The first time when he had to brake sharply to dive behind a car on a LH bend when oncoming traffic nearly speared him. And the second, long overtake may, again, have had far more view than the camera allows.
AYE, thats smashing, Is this a common practice for PoliceBikers & would they do this w/ tourists renting bikes? Cheers. Thinking about a return trip to Wales eh?
I'm assuming I'm wrong. But that Blue St looks suspiciously like it's Tony C*****'s. What camera system is being used? The advanced rider group I'm a trainer with has been talking about the value of video for detailed feedback to the student. That numpty on the sports-bike was lucky. Two dodgy overtakes, one which looked on the edge of very dangerous. The message is clear. Don't overtake on bends unless you have a VERY clear view of the road ahead.
I dont give two hoots about their helmets being open, or how safe they overtake. All I can say is thet they have a flippin brilliant job. I ride my bike for pleasure. Them boys get paid for it. P.S. When you get pulled by a bike cop, at least they treat you like a human being. Car cops treat you like a murderer.
How the fuck is that the police driving like that..there was overtaking on blind corners and into oncoming traffic and the guy in black just flies past them on a corner, Thats a bit brave.
Man I'm surprised they didn't get upset at 5:25, it's a blind corner. Should I be motoring along in my Lambo at 60mph coming the other way you'd be toast. Also if the Rover had to brake for a deer or something you'd all be in trouble. You're a plant aren't you? Sent to ruffle the pupil? Taking it in turns like in Super Troopers? Mother of gaad.
The best rider there was the bobby on the black bike..pipped you and your pupil nicely before the solid white line and the left hand bend overtake was straight out of a Class One ride...disappointing ride from the cops..clearly class two..you would not have passed my team in my days...
i agree- it is racist- thats why i objected to you using it in earlier related videos. that aside, i suppose the overtaking rider/ instructor was either: watching the pupil in regard to his/her return position, observing where the road goes or planning for the next overtake- remember when the way is clear you can use the other side of the road to maximise your view- there is nothing in the highway code that states that you cannot use the other side aside from overtaking quackenbacker
note to all POLICE motorcyclists.i am going to continue to nod at you ,as a sign of respect to you as fellow bikers . but why oh why do most of you not nod back...grr.. its not like your on harleys..coff
entry, you can get away with, but exits and appexes is the most likely place for some ignorant twit to be strandling the white line. no matter if you your a pig on a blue light call or not its still more important that you get to the destination late than not at all. beside we are always being told to slow down. then on top of that i have been around too many corner with people in my lane - tighter line saved my life many times and i have never been in a situation on not being able to stop
erm i have been riding since i was 17, and average around 18,000 mile a year. and if they are soo good why the poor display of abilities. if you need to be over to the right of the lane to see around a left hand bend then your going too fast, its simple really. and yes i was sent on a bike safe programme for speeding - one of the five times i have been caught and yet no accidents. its a bit like the bike cop too be driving into the side a poilce car closing a road and 80mph... good yeh???
Ryan Francis Um, no. That's not an automatic fail. It's technically riding without a helmet IF your helmet is not rated for riding with it up. I passed my motorcycle test last month (DSA), rode 90% of my test with it up. I have the Shoei neotec that the police use (ironically so did my instructor) and he rode with it up to. To be able to ride with the chin bar up i believe it just needs to simply lock in place, in the event of an accident. AdvancedBiker is a highly qualified police car and bike instructor, it is indeed police training.
man there riding line are all over the shop. being one the right of the lane on a left hand bend is on of the dumbest thing you can do and they are following far to close to other vehicles. this the poor quality of policing we put up with in this shit whole a country. why dont they spend time catching crook instead of wasting time on inocent motorists
I've been riding and racing bike's best part of my life (successfully) and can honestly say without doubt I have never come accross a copper that can actually ride a bike properly so I have a question: Why ??, Furthermore I would be willing to put my money were my mouth is with a challenge that could be placed on utube just to prove that I'm right. Road riding Motocross/road racing/ stunts, it's all control I would love to prove police have very poor skills.
You are young and very unexperienced, i bet you even never try to ride the bike, if you do, then you should go to some advance bike training, to understand advance technics. Try "BikeSafe" program for the beginning. Maybe you understand. And one more think, mate - English Traffic police is the best in whole europe, i know what i'm talking about, i saw how police working in many european countries, an UK police is really professional.
What is this police obsession with repeating words?: "Left left", "Right right". You really can't confuse "left" with "right". I I know know this this sounds pedantic pedantic but it's patronising and unnecessary unneccesary! There...see how irritating it is...
These guys really are good, they make look so easy and effortless. Excellent video
Andrew

I'm surprized they didn't lock up the rogue rider who came into the picture at 2:37, he was reckless and riding like an idiot!
I got knocked off my bike (London) a little while ago by a motorist whom hit me from behind...I did not stand a chance; I have decided never to ride a motorcycle again as I simply no longer trust motorists! Lovely overtake at 4:45 - absolutely textbook for a long left bend like that - a joy to watch :-)
I could watch this all day man . i love police bikes , and i love the job , lol , i am happy if they pull over my dad .
You're quite right, for normal riding he is very close, but one of the reasons is that he is trying to find out what the rider is doing. He is looking at the rev counter and the speedo and figuring out what gear he is in. they are very good at what they do.
Exactly. its not like a nod distracts you from the road.. you can nod and look in separate directions at the same time.. incredibly frustrating.
I spoke to two owners from videos, and both confirmed that while they didn't feel that it was a big problem, both had experienced it at various speeds, and yes, it annoyed them. Looked like fun; thanks for sharing.

I reckon that rogue rider was in the Job looking at his lines…and probably known by the instructor!
Thanks for the reply and great vids

Took a look at the video at (4.50). Can't see what you are referring to but the riding is very, very good and no mistakes.
although to say the truth I know that UK police may be one of the best if not the best trained riders in Europe
erm no, what i have been saying is the most logical and sefest way of riding. the number of time we are told to slow down, so make use of slowing down and reduce danger - like i said you come across some gravel spread across the road surface at 60 you end up on the rong side of the road, even at 45 by the white line you will kissing some ones front grill, pulling in a little tighter give you more space to play with without increaseing danger by reducing speed. safe riding is about reducing risk

I like motorbikes. My grandpa used to have a Brough Superior in the 50s :) I am soon doing my CBT and then i can ride my Suzuki TS50 xD

The bikes are staggered in the lane so they can ride closer. Staying out of lane when approaching left hand bends gives an early view of any hazards.

Was the pupil riding with his flip helmet up and also the visor up as well- I was told off for doing that
@Limpandtotheleft
What about the Police overtake (4.50) into the video Lay by left , was it safe ?
Much abliged, have you seen the new Triumph Trophy's yet? Looks Brilliant.
it is withs some of them depends on which how the helmet was tested with the flip lid down or up

no but as long as you have a visual on the gixxer, you can do miles than the gixxer... on a single tank of fuel

No bike wave in Europe?
Just passed my practicle today, these riders are braking so many rules. How the heck did they get through the test? Like a load of cowboys.
Mick? Is that you? If so it's been a long time friend! KD7SZU from Montana. Hope you are doing well..
What speed would that be?
the guy on the 10R show them how to do it ok , " he nearly got his "chips" at 3.42 on the bend,
Ha ha journey starts in Bala, at 0.35 thats my old house on the left with my hornet 600 parked on the path
I dont give two hoots about their helmets being open, or how safe they overtake. All I can say is thet they have a flippin brilliant job. I ride my bike for pleasure. Them boys get paid for it. P.S. i wonder if he knew you were on a training run?? he took a chance!!
What speeds were the overtakes performed at?
20 above the limit using exemptions.
Whats up with that biker that passed all the police?
HGV lorries on Dual carriageway are 50mph, on single carriageways it's 40mph.
With all that riding experience I'm suprised you havent met any coppers who can ride properly because I KNOW I HAVE!!
ha ha ha, guy on the 10R showed em how to do it.
So the third bike, you mention is your mate, appears to be on a police bike also??
At times he was getting far to close to the bike in front. If the rider had braked suddenly, there could of been a nasty accident.
they were training around bala i better slow down next time am around there
The police have no chance by an Motocrossbike. ^^
@sparkygl0s
"Lan-gollan" I think he said!
Definitely NOT a Welshman!!
Two Ls are pronounced.. er... chhll. (How do you write that!?)
Pretty lame without the running commentary on the radio. What exactly are you training for? Abject silence?
I think it was put on here specifically to annoy you, actually.
Also if the Rover had to brake for a deer or something you'd all be in trouble.

that gixer rider shot past u guys!!! why didnt you ticket him?
Under British law they weren't wearing helmets either. To ride with the front up is illegal...if you want to be pedantic about things.
It's good, but it's not quite carling.
turning left, left.
Im gonna join once complete National Service , wooooohooooooo . lol
note to all POLICE motorcyclists.i am going to continue to nod at you ,as a sign of respect to you as fellow bikers . but why oh why do most of you not nod back...grr.. its not like your on harleys..coff

Hey I know that road, it,s between Bala and Corwen
Looks like a HJC Symax
Why you people insist on riding on the wrong side of the road is mind baffling
Triumph does look good

lots of faults there, lack of observation and road positioning the worst.must be first lesson lol.but then they are there to learn.

thats some of the worst riding ive seen for a long time if we road bikes like that at the very least get a ear full and breath test
Road riding Motocross/road racing/ stunts, it's all control I would love to prove police have very poor skills.
are u all playing as u get bored and everones overtaking lol
the police use cabugergs
it is so boring ..... i almost fell asleep haha
You are young and very unexperienced, i bet you even never try to ride the bike, if you do, then you should go to some advance bike training, to understand advance technics. Try "BikeSafe" program for the beginning. Maybe you understand.
And one more think, mate - English Traffic police is the best in whole europe, i know what i'm talking about, i saw how police working in many european countries, an UK police is really professional.
think your talking crap mate !! you just managed to pick them up talking as well i suppose over the radio lmao shut up!
What is this police obsession with repeating words?: "Left left", "Right right". You really can't confuse "left" with "right". I I know know this this sounds pedantic pedantic but it's patronising and unnecessary unneccesary! There...see how irritating it is...
