Pacing my 64 year old father to run a SUB 22 5K

  • Running a SUB 22 5K, at parkrun or any 5K race, is not an easy task. After my father, Steve recently turned 64, he asked me to pace him for a 5K to test his current running fitness. A 16:30 runner back in his day, Steve can still produce very respectable times for his age category.

@@jfneve Come on now. Parkrun post their stats. I'm 43 and last parkrun I scraped in at just under 25 mins, which put me right in the middle of my age group. I have no doubt at all he smashed his age group (and my dreams).

@@MijinLaw sorry man with all respect. we all have our time goals. but I ran 18.15 at 65 and I am trying to run sub 18 that is what i consider fast. so i have a different starting point for the word fast. But i will be the first to applaus if someone beats the 30min in a parkrun. i am very supportive to all runners, but i am not using the word fast often.

Nah you are just 'very fast' but this man is 'fast'. What percentage of people run a sub 22 in a 5k race?
If it wasn't fast, everyone would run sub 22, but they don't. Your comment is demeaning and you know it is. You probably just never bested his 5k pb. 🙈

Turned 70 late 2022 and hadn't run much at all for a decade. I was a fairish runner and managed a few age cat prizes in my late 50's. I wasn't prepared for the harsh decline in speed. If I had continued my running career, I'd have noticed the slowing pace over the years. Ah well. Trying to break the 24:00 barrier for a parkrun. Last 3 have been 24:03 24:03 24:04 I'll get there sometime this year hopefully.

I have the utmost inspiration for those 60 and older, it’s incredibly admirable and provides a blue print that this is achievable. Local runner around here, 70 years old, still clocks regular 22-23 minute 5ks, that’s just amazing. I follow the OG on strava, he runs 30-35 hilly mpw like clock work! Got to love it.

Perhaps we could make a video with you Louis if you’d like to - I think people would be fascinated by the subject of age and parkrun, where are you based?

Might sound silly but do you recommend running on a flat course? I started running in march and out of convenience I run outside my house pretty much and it's up and down a lot. I was thinking it would be nice to run on a flat to see just what I can do. My average pace is about 7min kilometre.

For someone just starting out, I would recommend a flat course :-)
