      it is extremely difficult when different parts overlap each other so dramatically, as musicians we are taught to not focus a whole lot on the other parts, but on your part/section. It is the job of the conductor to help blend the band. That helps a whole lot!!

    I too was brought here from the Carolina Crown Drum Corps, however, I was exposed to this Glass piece back in the 80s with Erte' winterguard who did this piece and also took first place...tie with State Street Review, but Erte' took it hands down. This piece allows or makes the creator of a show who uses this Glass piece to explore outside of the typical normal boundries and as such, typically steals the show. I have been a Glass fanatic since first hearing "The Photographer" used by another Winterguard back in the 80s (Miamisburg High School) and began to notice Glass music all over in movies, theatre and even TV throughout the years. Carolina Crown, a Drum Corps I knew very little about took this piece and did what hadn't been done before. They explored outside of the normal boundries of Corps to present an amazing achievement in both music, drama, drill, guard and most notably, emotion. I have watched their show literally 100 times and every single time I'm moved to tears. Every time. For those of you who have marched and performed on a stage that's 100 yards long in the open air, you already know how much work this show took for the kids, the long hours, the pain, the frustration, the confusing tempo at times, the insane dedication to the art of Drum Corps. As you listen to the final notes of the show and watch the entire field all at the same time...it's quite frankly one of the most emotional Drum Corps endings I've ever seen, and I've been addicted to Corps and Winterguard now for 40yrs! Thank you Sport of the Arts for bringing us closer to music that really moves. Music created for and by people who absolutely love music, and arts. Thank you, Mr. Phillip Glass.

      It's funny with Christopher Knowles. When I was 15 and listened to this four or five times a week, with and without drugs of various kinds, I imagined him as a drunken hobo in Washington Square Park muttering to himself. But in fact, these days he looks and sounds like my blind secondary school music teacher, and is just as impressive: ua-cam.com/video/er83Icj4RYk/v-deo.html . Since I grew up on the 1976 version, I actually felt the White poetry reader in this performance a bit too ... uptight and _present_ for this piece. I liked the way it was mumbled and nonsensical in the first version. But the precision in tuning and rhythm in the choir is so much better than the 1976 recording. Gorgeous post, thank you!

    • @sonicblAz
      @sonicblAz 2 роки тому

      @@sherylbegby the choir tuning is so bad on that original recording I'm surprised they released it! You're right that this performance is much more satisfying in that respect
