Love the idea of a built-in hub but I'd prefer a smart speaker with a screen so that I get visual information and videos as well. I decided to switch my smart speakers for a Lenovo Smart Display a while ago and am impressed with all its features, particularly the kitchen ones!
The sound quality does matter. I have a 1st gen Echo in my kitchen and we listen to music on it. I'm not going to link it to a bigger stereo system in my kitchen. It's the one speaker and that's it. The whole idea behind the echo is having 1 speaker that can fill a room. Co-Worker just bought a refurbished 1st gen Echo because we did a bunch of research about the sound quality. Amazon really messed up by having inferior sound on the new models (Plus, 2nd Gen). It's supposed to get better, not worse. I don't want a smaller Echo (2nd gen) if the sound quality is bad. The 1st gen is discontinued, but they really need to bring it back with any other updates and call it the 3rd generation.
PastTime777 try a Sonos One Alexa Speaker... $200 is too pricy, but it's a true sonos Play One speaker with alexa integration & sounds great. I think everyone knows the quality of Sonos
When I first received the item last Oct 31, I opened it and set it up. Everything went well, its responsive and quick to reboot when you restart it. The problem started when I received the update (which made the BASS really good), after rebooting, and I summon Alexa for the first command like. "Alexa, What time is it?" She only lit the ring and keep rotating and seems like she doesn't understand me. Then when I follow up another question she is okay. I made a voice profile and took days for me to decide to report it to Amazon Customer Service, and Amazon sent me a new one as a replacement. When it arrived, I set it up and use it for 10 minutes and it was okay. Then after 15 minutes of using it, I received the update, it rebooted and had the same problem. So I decided to buy a new one, Amazon Echo Plus black, I had this doubt which might sound funny that maybe there is something wrong with the Echo Plus Silver series. Then after a week I received it and set it up as I used to. After 7 minutes I received the update and I got the same response / Alexa trying to recognize my request and that's a big problem. So, I can say the problem is from the update. Again, after the update, your first call will hang the unit, I checked the app and nothing was recognized, so it means there is something wrong with the first call/summoning. Then I press the action button to terminate the hang, then asking her again and it will be okay. When you leave the room, for a couple of minutes or not using it for 10 to 15 minutes, and asked her again, what the time is and weather, it will hang only. I have attached here the video, I really hope the developer will see this, people might be fascinated with the hub feature along with the free hue bulb, without noticing it became deaf and poor in recognition in the first call of command. Let me clarify, I have 3 x Amazon Echo 1st gen which is still working so GOOD. 6 x echo dot which are very responsive, until I compare it to this Echo Plus which has problem in the first call that you have to come closer to terminate the hanged /stucked request by pressing the action button. I know what I am saying bacause other echo models are working well. I only have issues with the 3 pieces Amazon Echo Plus.
Buy one, Echo plus is good fun and the sound is fab especially if you like a lot of bass 😀 It’s also good for playing white noise or fan noise it helps me sleep 💤
I had the dot it was okay, I have the echo now works good had it a few weeks. I'm getting Google Home because I hear that it knows more info. Good video though
I've been undecided for the past few weeks now about buying, 1 minute I say yes and the next minute I'm saying no no i'll wait. At the moment I'm going to wait, I don't think it's worth the £139 it is at right now, more like £99.
When Amazon Echo (2nd generation) comes out can you compare it against the original as I have a sneaking suspicion that due to price reduction the 2nd gen variant will sound worse.

This is a huge fail for me. I’ve been waiting to buy an echo since I didn’t like the sound quality of the first one. For its size it ought to sound much better. The sound should be getting better between generations. Not worse.
Jacob Van Ness Agreed, I do wonder though if they made a deal with sonos an UE just to stick with what they know for now an let them do the good audio side as premium products havn't really worked for amazon in the past.
I don’t get it, my Echo 1st gen is a home hub as well, it discovers devices, sets them up in the same way, I am confused? What does it do over the 1st gen?
In other words, not worth the upgrade from the original Echo . Mind you, I bought my Echo four month prior the release of the second generation Echo at a great deal on Amazon for $80.
You can turn the light on and off without hub. However I received official message from Amazon saying echo plus is not compatible with scenes using Phillip hue smart bulbs. My suggestion is that Get dot and additional hub, it is official that echo plus cannot use scenes.
The old Ecco was a shit head to set up. Would not work at all with my router, I very nearly died from frustration. Google home was the complete opposite and was set up in seconds. Google knows more too.
you're not buying it because it sounds worse? lmao why would you want to buy the amazon echo for a speaker... just buy actual speaker if you want to play music. you're dumb if you're only buying this for music.
Seems like speaking to these things isn't where I want it to be. Its not addressed in the review but you can tell he has to communicate to it like hes speaking like a old voice simulator. where you need to pronounce and space all your words. When I can talk with accent and word blurring then I think I can pick on up, fuck talking like a robot.
All Alexa devices are all so out of date by 15 years or more, 1. should have rechargeable battery, 2. should be like all GPS devices around the world, meaning it should work ANYWHERE and without a dam app !!! 3. its a very Cheesy device !!! another Amazon scam !!!

My Alexa just got really confused during this video. Also you turned one of my light strips on, thanks Caleb :)

Where you even able to control the lights with the first one out of the box or did you actually need to buy something else for it to do that
Do you have to keep updating this, or can you update it yourself?
I had the dot it was okay, I have the echo now works good had it a few weeks. I'm getting Google Home because I hear that it knows more info. Good video though
what apps are you using to control echo plus?
is there any other apps i can use?
what if I am an iOS user?
alexa app
I still use it in 2024. Haha 🤣 Works fine for kitchen and in bedroom side table 😊
That greasy palm print on the black one was killing me.
Is the *Echo Plus* a 2nd generation yh?

This has already been done in another review. The 1st gen is better. The 2nd gen has a smaller tweeter. Get a 1st gen refurbished for $79.

plz when i take the power plug it goes off cant i used it whiles is charged
Sorry, can i set in Spanish the device? the mine is that.

An maybe a software update could do something
Get yourself an echo Dot and a good sounding speaker. Use the patch cable to connect, not Bluetooth
*I got my echo plus for $119 at target two weeks ago* 🤫

do you need the hue bridge when you have the light bulbs and echo plus?
Jimmyb 123 no, but it was a huge hassle for me to transition my hue lights that were connected to the bridge to the built in hub
Aaron Hung ok good to know, thank you!

The only reason I’m buying one is to put a Hal 9000 decal on it🤣.
is it wireless
As in portable?
The old Ecco was a shit head to set up. Would not work at all with my router, I very nearly died from frustration. Google home was the complete opposite and was set up in seconds. Google knows more too.
Wow that sound quality sucks! I’ll stick with the gen 1. The first generation Dot is also better than the second. WTH is Amazon thinking?
Is it portable
I think this is the dumbest question i have seen anywhere on the internet yet.... good job
It doesn't control z-wave devices I'm not buying it.
I'm not buying it because it sounds worse than the first.
