This is one of the many reasons I am reluctant to purchase any of the big name radio gear anymore. I just seems to me they could care less if it is repairable, and they are not designed to last as they seem to be using very low grade or marginally spec'd components. Nice repair though, and thanks for sharing as it is always fascinating to see.

Well agreed every brand has its issues but with the big name radio gear you have objectively many advantages other brands don't deliver. As there are: good working warranty regulations, spare parts for many years, good service documentations, factory support, at least working features and much more. Have you ever tried to get support from a low budget company when you need help if you want to get a challenging software application run? Or more simple, if you only need a new component for service? I have given up with low budget brands.

@@TRXLab I get your point. My tact was a bit different in that I moved (being into CW it was not that much of a move) to the digital modes and running low wattage kit/semi-homebrew transceivers. I have the electronics background so it was not that difficult for me to go that route. I also understand that this is not for everyone. Yeah I don't get all the bells and whistles that these major brands have to offer, I won't be breaking though those pileups, or working the elusive DX almost every day. Still, for me, I'm having as much fun as I've ever had working the bands. I'm just venting my frustration at some of the bad design choices being made with these major brands.

I have wore out the same style of surface mount jack on a different brand of radio. It too was a little difficult getting the new part in place and soldered but with a bit of patience I got it replaced. The quality of material these use to make some of these parts is questionable. 👍

And the volume knob of my lightly used FT-2980 causes cracking sounds. Bought new 3 years ago. My Philips FA-940 from 1994 doesn't do that. Yaesu should be headquartered in Congo or Sudan, not in Japan.

I’m having that same issue with my FTM400, I will “crack it open” soon. I just hope I can find that exact same connector online.

Great videos as always Peter, I have a Yaesu FT-991A with a head set jack problem and on mine I have speaker audio but when I plug in my head set it's intermittent, i tried another head set and the same thing, I can't find anyone that sells this jack part# P1091426, for the mean time I swapped the head set jack with the key jack since it's the same part number but I now can't use the key jack. Any information would be appreciated.

Well done Peter. Oh i hate those crappy jacks. I usually take them out by snipping it with very sharp cutters to save the pad. I will kill the plastic housing anyway, so i can snip the contacts far away from the pcb if possible. Why do the save 2 cents instead of buying better parts..i will never understand. There were crappy CBs in the 80´s with better jacks inside ;-) And they were easier to swap. Anyway, radio is back in service, thats what it is all about. Congrats! Jaja, Yaesu, schön rausgeputzt, hat nichts genutzt ;-) Styling ist nicht alles! Alles Gute, Peter und 73 de Olaf

Why didn't Yaesu repair or replace this themselves? What a shame.

    • @TRXLab

How should that be possible? The factory is in Japan, and they distribute the products worldwide, thus they have service centers.

My misused Discman, Walkmans, MiniDisc player never had a defective jack. Even my Philips DCC player has a jack that is still stirdy. My 4 year old phone has it still working. But I know 3 people who's Yaesu jack is loose or broken after 100 times connecting a speaker. Not Japanese. They should be ashamed and send a return box, apologize and replace it. Come on.

Hello Peter and greetings from County Clare Ireland. Nifty job. I ofttimes wonder why Mr Yaesu, Icom etc don't manufacture circuit board which would be easier to navigate and service and repair. It seems that manufacturers are hell bent on making it impossible to carry out repairs.
