Yeah the sleeves are frm. But it's actually reliable you just can't put forged pistons in it unless you do the whole mahle shit. But might as well just throw some darton MID sleeves it in bore to 89mm and send it
Reliability issues are more common in H series than F, due to the frm cylinder liners most H series have. One of the local guys in my area ran 10's on an f22 block with an f23 head all stock internals on ebay turbo setup. The F series have the strongest blocks but both H and F (except f20b and s2k) cannot handle high rpms as well because their larger blocks create a ton of crank walk (fluctuation in the journals) past 7500 rpm.
I had a 5th gen prelude with a h22a4 Loved it I currently have an rsx type s with a k24 block and k20 head And also i have a 08 accord coupe 6 speed J35
I own a Straight H swap EJ1 Obd1 JDM H22A with M2F4 trans. About to upgrade to an Mfactory helical lsd and carbon synchros. And if i can save up enough, mahle gold pistons, rods, king bearings and BOOST.
The F isnt popular because it's sohc and has low compression (meaning lower HP). Slap some pistons in it equal to that of an H and it will perform damn near to what an H will. The F is the economy version to the H, just as the D is to the B. The F22a is the epitome of reliability when it comes to Honda. Alot of tuners actually prefer the F block because of it's turbo piston friendly iron sleeves unlike the H which have FRM. It is possible to put an H head on an F block but it takes alot of work to do it right and really by that time you may as well have purchased an H. The F22a came in a jdm dohc version, very similar to the h23 nonvtec, just with 2mm smaller pistons.
One small correction - the F20B is not related to the F20C/F22C, nor is it related to the F series SOHC - It is in fact a MORE RELIABLE Steel sleeved H SERIES (Smaller Bore - Longer Rods - Shorter stroke) In my opinion the best sleeper of the series - check out my Prelude F20B swap Fun Fact - the C30 was the first production car engine to come from Honda with Titanium Connecting Rods
My personal favorite series is the F. Worked on A, B,C, D, F, H, J, K, L series. Wish they would go all timing chain but still love the J series. It’d also be great if they made a full size truck for the US market, but the transmissions would have to be beefed up to hand the extra torque and heat.
@@deson4958 The F engines are super simple to repair parts are plentiful even today new/ used parts and they’re cheap. In my opinion the right amount of simplicity, economy, reliability, and although not the most powerful engine can hold its own on highway or street driving. Well, hem, N22A user here. Spit on me petrol heads if you want, but after nearly 6 years of driving (without any failure), I still love that engine (and my Gen 7 Accord). If however I had to retain 3 honda engines, for sure that would be C32B, B18C, and F22C. *is still dreaming about a 2000-1 NSX with a C32B 6s manual*
I think they are even better than the new k20c1. The k20c1 omits the vetch on the intake side, which is terrible for us tuners who want big cams with factory idle(That's the whole point of VTECH). If in the future, Honda implements VTECH on both cams, then that engine will be king. Oh, and maybe take what Hyundai did and incorporate that into the k20C1.
Great vid, I just wanted to point out that not all vtec head swaps are called LS Vtec l. It’s only called an LS vtec when it’s swapped on to an b18 non vtec (LS/GS/RS trim integra) block. When swapped onto a B20 it’s called a b20 vtec
Honda is the only common car maker whos engines can put out over 100 hp per liter, handle 9k plus rpms, and still rack up over 250,000 miles. Not even the last gen Toyota Celica could keep up with the Acura RSX, as their yamaha built engines would explode before the k series would hit vtec.
The F series is a weird one. It's basically three different engine series. Imagine trying to explain to a non Honda guy why you're swapping in an F20B to replace your F22B1, and why the F20C and F22C1 engines have nothing in common with the previously mentioned engines.
As someone that has helped a friend build and tune his high compression LS/VTEC (B18A1 block/ported B18C1 head) engine and also has tuned it, the B-series is a marvel of late 1980's/early 1990's technology. The B-series engines truly feel like motorcycle engines in cars. The only disappointing B-series to me was the B20, at least bone stock. The rest of the B-series line, as long as there is a manual transmission backing the engine, they all feel great to drive from just off idle to red line. When I finally got to drive a well built H-series though, and felt the amount of torque that beast can make.....I kinda want to H swap my other Civic.... I can say I also truly respect what the K-series is able to do as well. Drove a friend's 4 door Civic Si with its K24 before and after some mods. I was not impressed with the car stock. With bolt-ons and a tune by Humble Performance, I suddenly wanted his car. Honda engines can be SOOO awesome with so little effort, and they tend to be pretty darned good from the factory.
The f series motor came out in 1990 all the way to whenever it ended. My 92 accord has an f22a1 in it and it's got 235000 on it and I haven't had any issues with it thus far
And get it tuned with a hondata s300 ecu or something. My buddy has a b20 block from a crv and a head from a gsr. With type r cams and a hondata s300 ecu

@@ChrisB-bf4sq Thanks a lot man how hard was it to pull the engine out to put the tranny on? Also is there anything else I need to make the head compatible with the b18 block?
Ethan James , it’s your basic Honda, I wouldn’t recommend you do it yourself if you don’t know much about doing it, I found it not too difficult but it depends on your level of knowledge, things that I recommend you know is how to Align a clutch properly and make sure you have all the right tools and equipment. The b series just like k,h,d,f series is interchangeable. B16 head is a straight bolt up
Don’t get confused within my wording , b series is straight bolt on with other b series, h series is straight bolt on with other h series and so on, if you want to interchange others for eg, right now I’m running an H22A with a K20Z1 tranny to do such you would need an adapter bracket

I have a Honda Odyssey with a J serirs engine and I disagree with the statement with the lower to mid range torque. Its peak power is a mid range engine to higher rev range for a stock vehicle. I don't know if a better gear ratio in the transaxle would help the bottom end but I can say it is a strong engine and surprises me how fast something that big can move. To me it more of a big wagon then a van when you think of it. Overall it's a great vehicle that people can laugh at until it pulls away from them.
@@berys76 yes yes. The Civic utilises the turbo version. The Fit/Jazz has the NA one...115hp @6600 rpm and 146Nm @1400-5500 range... Pulls hard and loves to be revved...

I had a 2.4 accord type S CL9, reliability wise the car was a marvel, but I was very disappointed with the performance. A 177hp diesel BMW or a 180 hp TT would pull harder. Had a JDM h22 in my Civic eg hatch. That thing was a lot of fun
5:56 the way that thing loses oil pressure i betcha shes gotta spun rod bearing.
I seen that wtf?
Nope. Bad sensor; very common nsx problem.
i am old man!! i built chevys in my youth now i learning the hondas! and i would thing if it realy lost pressure like that it would seize as soon as they shut it off, so guessing bad sending unit?
I have a legend got the c35a engine in it bloody good engine lots of power
There was also a 2.3L H23 VTEC with an iron crank (vs. the H22's forged crank) called the blue top.
was it better?
@@MikeyAF It has a lower redline and more torque down low. I wouldn't necessarily say it's better but I like it. Being able to light up the tires from a roll in second gear is fun af.
Haha, 6:21 is in Tacoma, WA. I drive through this tunnel every morning in my S2k. Way to represent for the PNW.
The H series also have FRM-lined (Fiber Reinforced Metal) cylinder blocks.
So it shits out pistons faster? Get it? Fiber? No? Ill see myself out...
I prefer the f20b it has iron sleeve cylinders perfect for boost and its more reliable then a h series.
I like my B series from the SiR B16A,although it may not have as much hp as the K series I'm still content with my motor.
Leave a like if you're an H22 owner.

One thing for certain, Honda didn't love Diesel Engine
Good for them. Diesels are nightmare in colder climate always have some issues.
Honda N series
I built my d16z6 and I love it. Single jingle making 433whp 307wtq at 21psi.
D16y8 has vtec brother no disrespect I love your channel
The D15B from the EG VTi too, can't remember the engine suffix.
Also d16z6
I believe the only d15/16 that doesn't have vtec is the A series, B and onwards has vtec isn't it?
But D series is trash lmao
One small correction - the F20B is not related to the F20C/F22C, nor is it related to the F series SOHC - It is in fact a MORE RELIABLE Steel sleeved H SERIES (Smaller Bore - Longer Rods - Shorter stroke) In my opinion the best sleeper of the series - check out my Prelude F20B swap
Fun Fact - the C30 was the first production car engine to come from Honda with Titanium Connecting Rods

My personal favorite series is the F. Worked on A, B,C, D, F, H, J, K, L series. Wish they would go all timing chain but still love the J series. It’d also be great if they made a full size truck for the US market, but the transmissions would have to be beefed up to hand the extra torque and heat.
Why F series?
Pros and cons?
@@deson4958 The F engines are super simple to repair parts are plentiful even today new/ used parts and they’re cheap. In my opinion the right amount of simplicity, economy, reliability, and although not the most powerful engine can hold its own on highway or street driving. Mated to a manual transmission they’re pretty fun to drive imo. Con to me having to change the timing belts every 100k miles which is not a huge problem as it’s just part of maintenance.
@@willdavids7075 i wouldn't actually call this a Con since other cars are way more unreliable
VTEC KICKED IN YO..
I own a B-Serie Del Sol (b16A2) from my 1st ever car, with atleast 400.000 km on the engine.
I was the mechanic that took care of it at the honda dealer before i bought it from the 1st owner.
The original clutch failed at 270xxx KM so i bought it real cheap, fixxed it and its my daily every since.😁
The engine needed a body/chassis swap thoo🤣 Its as still in a del sol, but one that was once a esi/SI (d series.)
only replaced the headgasket and cleaned the cyllinderhead once, because i experimented with ethanol and methanol🙃👌
only new seals, gaskets and 0 new bearings,pistons/rings/valves, all original and the gearbox has never been opend 0 probs.
2:46 The best one :P
K24a2**** for the tsx motor...specifically the 2006-2008 version ilsince it was updated.

Where is the R series?
C series Oil pressure drops off as RPM increases 5:58
Why does that happen? Can any mechanic here explain?
-SakiSkai-, the owner in the original video says it was a faulty pressure sensor.
I mean i would be scared shitless
Its probably low on oil
As the pump flows more with rpm it will push more into the head and not have as much oil in the sump

F22 was popular for frankenstien builds my accord was a frankenstien build the vtec head from a preferably destroyed bottom end h22 fits perfectly on top and wiring for vtec is easy as well they make kits for it. Mine was turboed after 1 year of ownership. i did the frankenstien shortly before. i was makeing roughly 230 had a few power adders installed prior to the turbo walboro 255 fuel pump 750cc injectors stainless steel headers and hollow cats and an exhaust. i cant remember the company by no mean was it rice sounding had a super deep hum.
Honda: tiny engine, million rpm, decent peak power (if you have patience), 3 ft-lb torque, noise that implies sound-barrier breaking speed.
That's why the smaller engined high revving hondas like the civics have very close ratio gears...the torque is made in the gearbox
There's just no feeling of power without solid crankshaft torque.
All Honda B series had forged crankshafts, Honda never used cast cranks in any of there engines. That’s why people don’t really upgrade them
Thank God for subtitles 😂
Thank you from a Honda for Lifer

@@themonolithian You're the who sucks bitch
Well, hem, N22A user here. Spit on me petrol heads if you want, but after nearly 6 years of driving (without any failure), I still love that engine (and my Gen 7 Accord). If however I had to retain 3 honda engines, for sure that would be C32B, B18C, and F22C. *is still dreaming about a 2000-1 NSX with a C32B 6s manual*
Are the K series much superior than any other series?
I think they are even better than the new k20c1. The k20c1 omits the vetch on the intake side, which is terrible for us tuners who want big cams with factory idle(That's the whole point of VTECH). If in the future, Honda implements VTECH on both cams, then that engine will be king. Oh, and maybe take what Hyundai did and incorporate that into the k20C1.
@@nezabytes Learn to write VTEC

Great vid, I just wanted to point out that not all vtec head swaps are called LS Vtec l. It’s only called an LS vtec when it’s swapped on to an b18 non vtec (LS/GS/RS trim integra) block. When swapped onto a B20 it’s called a b20 vtec
Best engine in the world!!!

Pretty Sure im sure they great at developing engine in the masses. However thats not what you were talking about. They are not the best engines
Easily the best engines ever created.
Thanks so much for making this Video

Very good information and interesting video. Thanks
First from Brazil to see!
The D17A1 is the best engine Honda ever made!
Just what i was looking for, absolute hero 👍🏻👌🏻🙏🏻🇬🇧

So I could put VTEC head in my Honda CR-V with a factory standard B20 engine to make it VTEC?
Yeah gsr head.
And get it tuned with a hondata s300 ecu or something. My buddy has a b20 block from a crv and a head from a gsr. With type r cams and a hondata s300 ecu

So im looking to get a 2001 acura integra base as my first car and was wondering what vtec head would fit?
Ethan James b16 head, I also recommend a b16 tranny as well, I had an 00’ integra LS as my first car and that was my setup, b18b bottom b16a head with a b16 tranny and stage 2 clutch
@@ChrisB-bf4sq Hey thanks man I know a thing or two about cars probably the most in my sophomore class which is not saying much. Anyway what about wires. What about the tiny mighty L-series! 1.5L VTEC 4 cylinder that is in the Honda Fit!
Not Hitler but the guy's right, he should've talked about the L series, also the R series
Not Hitler I liked his comment and also dislike your comment, case closed.
how do you know if someone likes their own comment?
Yea I cant believe he forgot the L smh
Yup, the L-series, R-series and (especially) the K-series are the best engines Honda has ever made.
Overall it's a great vehicle that people can laugh at until it pulls away from them.
what about L series?
User996 nope it takes L's
I think it's pretty newer, he should have covered it...

@@berys76 yes yes. The Civic utilises the turbo version. The Fit/Jazz has the NA one...115hp @6600 rpm and 146Nm @1400-5500 range... Pulls hard and loves to be revved...

Yup, sadly there was no 5 cylinder for the European market.
It's sad, sounds like a good swap :/
Its the only family I have never seen before here in the U.S. it would not be a good swap at all because there is no aftermarket support, so unless you have pretty good fabrication skills and don't mind searching far and wide everytime you need a part...

Pretty cool vid.. ran b series for ever but now run a K setup and love it.
What about the new NSX with the 3.5Liter DOHC V6 twin turbo. Is that a variant of the J-series engine?
I had a 2.4 accord type S CL9, reliability wise the car was a marvel, but I was very disappointed with the performance. A 177hp diesel BMW or a 180 hp TT would pull harder. Now I have a modified cupra 1p1 stage 2+ and it's a completely different animal. I sometimes remember with nostalgia my loved accord and how reliable it was, but the cupra is just mind blowing when it comes to performance. I know it's not fair to compare a 190 hp saloon vs a 350hp hot hatch, but the moral of the story is that the honda didn't pull like 190hp, more like 150, and it was in tip top shape.
i love the honda engines!!!! cheers and great video
