A Lot of Really Good Track Work got Done in our Last Shut Down

- We had dead track for a couple of weeks and a lot of track work got done.
We will go over that work in today's video. Kudos to all the guys who
worked track during this time for doing an excellent job and doing it
safely, plus to our company here who spent the money on our track work.
It was money very wisely spent.

I think we can all be very, very thankful that Iron Synergy allows me
to make these videos. As most of you guys know many of the big
railroads have developed a sour taste in the eyes of the public and
many, many in the public question their safety. Many of those railroads
don't allow filming. When you are afraid of having your operation filmed
and shown, that to me says, you have something to hide or you are
ashamed of your track/safety record or your employees.
I can so thankfully say, this is not the case with Iron Synergy. By allowing
me to make these videos that proves this company does care about the
safety of their employees and the safe operation of their trains and that
they have nothing to hide behind a veil of secrecy or to be ashamed of.
We do have problems here, all railroads every where have problems, all
coal mines every where have problems. But not only do I show problems,
I show them getting corrected. And I also show many, many things that we
are doing to help prevent problems from occurring in the future such as
the track work that got done in this video. All in all, I think these videos put
forth a very positive image of Iron Synergy and their commitment to having
a very safe operation.
I am proud of my track and the work I do out here and am very, very pleased
that Iron Synergy has spent a good bit of money to get my track in fine
and dandy shape. Every employee at this operation depends on the safe
transportation of our trains, this track is the life blood of the mine.

I would love to ride my rail cart on that line only problem is I'm in so cal .they recently remove a 50 mi stretch of abandoned track down by the salton sea ☹
Question, how much of the CFR applies to you since you don't interchange with other railroads? That's a cool operation you have there, it just begs to be modeled.

I love that Iron Senergy is giving the trackage the overhaul and love that it needed so badly. That not only proves their commitment to the railroad but to the entire operation there at the Cumberland Mine. Getting all that coal spillage shoved out of there and new ballast down should help the drainage and keep those curves in good shape for longer and hopefully easier to keep up. I didn't know that Amtrak offered outsourced track work for other roads but it makes sense. The crews and the equipment aren't doing any good sitting idle so may as well make some money to help them earn their keep. Looks like they did AMAZING work during the shut down. Thanks for showing us around, Dave! I know it doesn't matter much because I'm just a pleb and not a multi-million dollar corporation or municipality looking to purchase coal but Iron Senergy's efforts and investments, as well as allowing you to document them, really makes me happy.
It is not AMTRAK but amtrac - a different organization.

The railroad track is an integral part of the business. Without it coal can only be shipped by truck. And at a greatly reduced volume. And at the cost of wear and tear to the infrastructure. Roads highways etc.

Nice work Dave! It's really nice to have a bit of downtime now and then to get that backlog of things done! I saw some foreign power today on the way to town. A Norfolk Southern locomotive coupled with a BNSF and another, very odd named loco that I forgot 😑 Norfolk Southern is very rare in these parts!
BNSF is just as rare here, so it's a real treat when one comes in

I just saw the news where the mine is shutting down or has shut down. Best wishes to you and the other mine employees.
Iron Synergy's official statement to their employees today says that the rumors
that Cumberland Mine will close down permanently are false. We were told
by middle management last week in a meeting that the future of our
mine is rosy. They have big plans for the future here. We are very thankful
that we are working. This mine was scheduled to be shut down over 2 years
ago and Iron Synergy took over and have kept us working. Thank you for
writing in and for your concern my friend.

very, very fortunate that Iron Synergy does allow me to make
and show these videos. I think it speaks very well of the company
because these videos show that the company does care about
safety and that they are constantly improving the safety of
the operation. I do show problems we have but I also show them
getting corrected. All RR's have problems, all coal mines have
problems and they always will. But showing the problems getting
corrected goes a long way I think towards putting forth a positive
image of Iron Synergy as a company that cares about their
operation and employees.

that was so nice to see the stabilizing of the tracks in the bad areas, tamping most of the line helps
so much to level out and creat a more stable run down the tracks for the engines! no more “ weebles”
on the rails! I always get nervous when I see a big wobble coming down the rails. hope that you are doing

Seeing this video uploaded yesterday talking about the bright future of the mine followed by the news today is wild. One day its the best situation and the next its gone down to crap. Situations change fast and this is another reminder.

Will the terrible bridge collapse in Baltimore prevent you from shipping coal for a while? Do your coal barges go downstream toward Baltimore? Hopefully it does not shut you down. Great video, Thanks Dave!
no, their coal goes to barge at the end of their line. their coal doesn't come here. there is no barge to ship unloading/loading at Baltimore. just ns, and csx are blocked from loading more coal from hopper cars. the ns coal loader is owned by Consol energy. Tradepoint Midatlantic was loading ships in 2019, but stopped, their pier is usable, it's on the south side of the bridge. Only the Brandon shores powerplant can unload barges, because its coal comes from Norfolk.

of their employees. Our last company spent almost nothing on
track and our new company had quite a hole to dig themselves
out of on this track, but they have done it and I couldn't be more
happy about how nice my track is currently. We do not barge coal to Baltimore. Read the comment reply I made to Michael Case
for our relationship with Baltimore harbor. The bridge collapse
may or may not affect us, hopefully not. Appreciate very much

It is great that Iron Synergy invests in their infrastructure. They are prudent to do so since a well run company will help their employees keep their jobs and stay safe. Happy employees are all that much better for a companies bottom line!

I watched one of your videos recently, where you gave thanks to the new owners that belive Safety is number one and keeping the facilities in good operation order, good to hear. I have recently joind up with a group NARCOA where we are required to keep our motorcars in good safer operational condition and we had to go through training then written exam along with hands on mentoring before an license will be issued. Railroading comes along with rules, plenty of rules and for good reasion, I appreciate that.

@@ccrx6700 The track really looks good; I imagine getting rid of that brush and trees by track side really helps. I used to do tree trimming for a friend of mine and I always had cuts and scratches all over me by the end of the day.I heard a railroad executive once said the key to track maintenance was drainage, drainage and drainage. I can see how that would be true!

@@ccrx6700 Mr. Dave, I wish the ELS RR would take care of their tracks like you do in Pennsylvania. The ELS is in Upper Michigan and Wisconsin and they do not take care of their tracks so far just this year, there has been 3 or 4 derailments, Cars jumping the tracks. So sad they have the monies, I suppose, but their tracks are in terrible shape. And they move about 25 to 70 cars per daily by double to single engines. The major product is pulp wood and finish product is siding put out by Louisiana Pacific in Salgola.

A big mistake here was when they closed our mines no one looked at what it would do to the community There are dead places here that once thrived before the mine closed. It's great your company are doing so much to keep the mine working safely and efficiently. Looking back on your track a few years ago and now you can see how much better it is when you show a train passing the cars are not rocking. Really pleased about your track inspection Dave 'No Defects' as the hotbox detector says
If you were here Cedarcam I could take you around and show you
a lot of communities that once thrived and when the mines and
steel mills shut down those have significantly dilapidated. That's
great you can remember how the track was back then and see

Something I noticed in the Canadian National maintenance is replacing problem areas with sections of ready track that was premade and they take the areas down to bare ground and then re ballast.
That's the perfect way to rehabilitate track Brian. When our RR
was built they brought in track panels like you describe to build
the original track here, of course it was all new ballast back then

Maintenance techniques has progressed along way since the days of the Gandy Dancers
We all like hydraulics now for sure Larry. There's still some
of the manual labor on the track but a huge part of that is
now done with machines, and we are all thankful for that!
Those guys back in the day were some tough cookies.

says that the rumors that Cumberland Mine will close down permanently are false. We were told by middle management last week in a meeting that the future of our mine is rosy. They have big plans for the future here. We are very thankful that we are working. This mine was scheduled to be shut down over 2 years
ago and Iron Synergy took over and have kept us working. Thank you for writing in and for your concern my friend.

From NJ they replaced the tracks. They had a ton of ties. Place a sign on the ties at a AC or Home Depot or Farmers. Sign should red home garden ties. Then in demand you sell them off. Good luck.
Last year we sold many tractor trailer loads of used ties to
landscapers. Worked out good, this year we didn't and I don't
know why, perhaps they will come back in later to get them.

Dave where are you located? I’d like to map you and see where you are in relationship to the Ohio river and Pittsburgh. I live in Florida and I enjoy your show every week.
Our mine and prep plant is located a bit past Kirby Pa Jim. The tracks go 16.8 miles east to Alicia Pa. where we load coal on barges on the Monongahela River. Our harbor facility is directly below Grays Landing Lock and Dam. We are 1 hour straight south of Pittsburgh and about 30 minutes north of Morgantown WV.
The Monongahela River flows into the Ohio at Pittsburgh. Thanks

Is the bridge collapse in Baltimore going to effect you people any? I understand that a lot of product moves in and out of the port of Baltimore.

Thank you Michael for the kind words. We do send coal to Baltimore via CSX trains. I do not know how many trains we send
there, but it's not a whole lot, but we are currently waiting on an
ocean ship to dock so we can load it with coal for India. So
that bridge may very well delay that from happening. I do not
have a totally accurate answer for you tho. That event was
certainly a tragedy and all of our thoughts and prayers need to
go out to those who were on that bridge and their families. It's
a total mess what they now have to deal with in getting that
bridge replaced. Wow! There was an article put out today that
said India takes about 12% of their total coal imports from
Baltimore and that bridge collapse will affect those imports.
I admire your attitude and can-do spirit. Thanks Dave for another great day on the job, enjoyed it much!

Dave, railroads aren't as bad as NASCAR. How do you make a $ Million in NASCAR?? Spend $3 Million.
How do you make a $ Million in railroading? Spend $900,000.
To keep a railroad working, there is constant maintenance and track expenses above and beyond.the motive power and rolling stock expenses. But when the railroad is set up ready to work, the cost per ton moving good and materials is the least expensive method of transport. And since there is estimated to be about 200 to 300 years of coal available (world wide), the trains can be rolling for centuries!!
