Glad you did this one. It's in my top ten. I have heard some reactors say it was not a fave of theirs partly because of the amount of vocal fry/raspiness. Totally. This is how she learnt so sing (as a child she started clicking on youtube for legendary jazz and soul and Spiritual live performances. We know how the youtube algorithms work - she was creating her own time-capsule - youtube suggesting more of the same - defining her ideas about music) (yeah I am sure she was aware of the radio and friends liking pop music at school - but you get my drift). One does not "learn" this stuff - one grows up submerged in it.

I love this little girl when she does her vocal experiments, without any fear. In each song she look for her own interpretation key and since she have a thousand keys, she just have to have fun seeing which key seems most suitable. 😅 It's great to be able to see her research of musical performance, here at 13 years ago she has a maturity in her voice, with that exasperated use of her scratching voice, which shivers, even her rehearsals are small masterpieces, especially considering the age in which she carries them out 😳

Thank you for this reaction to an iconic song. I had never heard of it until Angelina released this video. Since then I have searched for and listened to many people sing it, including a couple of the young singers I follow on UA-cam. Apart from the Etta James version, Angelina is the only one who is able to convince me that that is how it should be sung. Although I like the other young singers who have covered this, they are a long way from achieving Angelina's ability to take a song - any song - and release the emotions of the lyrics so convincingly. The Queen of Blues - of Jazz - of - does it every time. There is so much vocal "fry" in her voice that I could use it to fry the breakfast bacon :-) A few months ago, I mentioned that I would listen to some Rap music and get back to you on what I thought about the genre. A lot of what I've listened to covered social issues and I agree with the message in many of the lyrics. However, unless I have a "cheat sheet" with the lyrics in front of me, my ancient brain is unable to understand because the pace in which the message is sung is far to fast for me to assimilate. So, to summarise. Although it will never become my favourite genre it certainly has a place within music, and I will "dip my toes in the water"from time to time.
