If you were a fan then the stats screen was usually pretty straightforward ( if it could even match the complexity of Arcanum's )
Would you like to put your one skill point into Long swords, short swords, daggers, spears, sledgehammers, ball-peen hammers, bows, pickaxes, shields, maces, blunt weapons (but not maces or hammers), weaponized masonry or dildo bats? Except then it turns out everyone uses ball-peen hammers as a weapon and there's only two weapons for each weapon type other than 140 different ball-peen hammers. And the best weapon in the game is a dildo bat.

10:41 Not that anyone cares but here's why he's called "Wolfhound". The book makes a big deal out of "true names" kinda akin to "Wizard of Earthsea". Our young protagonist was undergoing his coming of age ritual, where the tribe elders take a boy's name away and give out a new, "grown-up" name. But the ritual was interrupted with attacking marauders, who murdered everyone and took our protagonist to the slave mines. So, the boy had his name taken away and not given one, so he was nameless in the slave mines. Then, he dueled one of the guards by the name of Wolf for his freedom and won. The slaves rejoiced and named him "Wolf-killer" or "Wolfhound". Edit: btw big points to you Ross for knowing what the hell "the Wolfhound" is, it's kinda obscure. Maybe you'll review the Night Watch games sometime? They were enjoyably awful and very 00-s.
Yeap. The (in)famous masters of "trash and cash" game design philosophy. Basically, they made Steam Greenlight level trash before Steam Greenlight even became a thing.
StarForce... the only DRM worse than Denuvo. Eugh. I still remember Cenega (part of 1C, another russian publisher) replaced DRMs in polish version of Fallout3. They removed GfWL (not supported in Poland, yet) and Securom then put StarForce. Hated that crap, constant BSoD. It was in Divine Divinity too so I had to wait for GOG release for it. It was worth it, game is amazing. Divinity, not Fallout3....
What a relief, mold and all!!! Mr. Scott, you made my night. I work in food, had a 300 dollar order tonight out of nowhere. I saw this pop up in my feed, my night ends on a positive note. Thank you Mr. Scott, THANK YOU!!!!!!!
42:27 - Aeon Flux!? OOH! Ross - _THERE WAS AN AEON FLUX GAME!_ Based on the actual MTV series instead of the Charlize Theron movie. Well... sort of. Cryo Interactive was developing it for PSX/PC back in the late 90's, lost the license partway through development and did a quickie conversion job to turn it into an original IP so they could release it. But when you know it was an Aeon Flux game for 70% of development, it's SUPER OBVIOUS. I haven't played it personally so I can't vouch as to the quality of it, but look up 1997's Pax Corpus sometime.
Everyone thumb up the OP. Ross needs to learn about this. While I'm here, I think it's worth mentioning that the Aeon Flux movie tie-in game actually has an original story that supposedly ties together both the movie and the animated series. At the very least, it has elements from the cartoon that the movie dropped. Admittedly, I haven't actually played it, but it was apparently built on the same engine as BloodRayne and assumedly plays like it. Still, I think Pax Corpus would make for better Game Dungeon material anyway, and unlike the Aeon Flux game, it's available on PC.
Ross is already aware of that. I made a post on the forums pointing this out: www.accursedfarms.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=8975 But I've tried to search the game for myself and couldn't find any .iso for the PSX version, and the only images for the PC version that are around the web are DEFECTIVE! They have missing files and the game crashes at one point as a result. Combined with the fact that there's very few footage on UA-cam, and none of it is about anyone beating the game, this is a true game in extinction. There's still physical copies flying arond eBay/Amazon but they are also extremely rare. Dunno if Ross will even cover this one.
I definitely like the rise of the undead's campaign compared to the drama-filled Night Elf's campaign, even though the Night Elves faction are my more favorable one.
@@mildpassThat has to be nostalgia talking. Arthas's fall feels impactful because his dialogue, especially with Uther, is written well for a video game of its time. However otherwise it's a pretty barebones "hero falls for the dark side" plot. Not even that exactly because his blade explicitly seems to mind-control him, instead of e.g. feeding him delusions about how he's actually saving his people
Holy cow! I did not expect this to be a Volkodav game - this guy is one of my favourite characters in slavic fantasy literature. But I was even happier to find out that you knew who Volkodav was at all :D Thanks for the awesome episode, Ross!
I saw Akella logo. Akella. That crappy russian publisher that put its crappy StarForce DRM in every single game in mid-2000s. That crap could literally kill PCs of users. Not even starting on their translations. They were beyond awful. Sometimes to the level of "It's so bad you should see this" of awful. Yeah...
As a Russian, I agree, they suck, like BAD. There are rarely any good (or correct) vocal and text translations, at least those that are good, are more than good, they are better.
There was nothing worse than seeing that white scribble Fargus-killer wolf on the covers. At least it has been put down by now, so we can rejoice. (1C isn't going anywhere ever ever ever though and Noviy Disk was assassinated, so... things are still bad)
Ross, if you want a good Russian RPG for a change, try Space Rangers. It has everything: open world, crazy-ass aliens, hilarious quests, intricate AI and oh my God minigames.
Yay, a new episode! It immediatly cought my attention that this game was made by Akella, which is a Russian game studio. Of all games I've expected to appear in your videos, Russian ones are the least expected. Also, I haven't completed watching this video yet, but I think this is a game "Волкодав" (Volkodav), which was made after the movie with the same name. The movie was pretty lacking (and I guess so is the game, because we all know how much movie-based games usually suck), but it was based on a book that is actually pretty good (or so I've heard). Anyway, thank you for continuing this series, Ross. You are awesome. Know that you have fans in Russia, too :D Although not too many, but I will recommend this series to all of my friends who are into videogames and who can understand English more or less. P.S. I apologise for any possible grammar mistakes in this comment. I don't comment on English-speaking videos very often. P.P.S. Although having a reply from Ross himself would be pretty awesome :D
"Where is our lady?" "No, you can't see her; she's making a statement." "Where is she?" "Look, it may take a while. You wanna wait: there's a bench over there." "Surveys surroundings. Leans forward. I'll be back."
The way those bandits came out at the beginning felt like Pokemon. That ending the bad one. Reminds me a lot of Breath of Fire IV and Tales of Xillia 2. Where you kill your friends. But this...this is hilarious.
Until today, I literally had no idea there existed rushed Russian tie-in games for Russian movies. Guess you learn something everyday. I was expecting the "movie game" you teased to be about a movie most people have actually heard about but man do you really go above and beyond in picking interesting subjects for this series. You even went and watched this obscure movie as well. That's dedication.
Jesus christ I just remembered how hard the saxophone in a medieval fantasy part made me laugh 😂 I actually love it lol Thats one of the best things this game did 😂
Hello from Spain Ross. First, I love your channel and I'm glad you've uploaded videos again. Second, the readjustments of the terrain in the game are due to the fact that the game engine calculates some of its vectors in integers instead of decimals. In playstation1 it was a question of technical limitations, in this game ... It does not make sense ... in the year of that game I was more than overcome the trauma. Could it be that maybe the game was intended for Play1 and they took it to PC? Did not they have any idea ...? who knows...
41:28 Not only is the line golden in it of itself, but I also find the grammatical implication that she is shouting triumphantly in the face of high frequencies to be both hilarious and oddly fitting, given her ungodly screech would defy what we conventionally consider to be high frequencies.
I'm likely going to quit my job, so watching Wolf Hound feels necessary. I thought this through, so I'll be fine. Pretty sure my katana is my admission ticket.
@19:37 I swear to god this is the voice actor from "The chosen - well of souls" just doing an old ladie's voice while talking through his pinched nose. I am dead serious, I think it is actually the exact same guy.
This "wobble terrain" is dynamic LOD (level of detail). It adjusts details of mesh depending on how far camera is. It is present in all games with any terrains, but most of them aren't done so shitty
That Texture issue on PSX was due to low Floating Point Precision. Essentially they were just not precise enough to perform the conversion from the 3D position of the polygon to the 2D screen position that it was rendering to. Results are now engraved on all our memories, making for a great Nostalgia effect that we can add to any game nowadays using a clever shader.
For the terrain warping, it's probably a bad "tesselation" implementation, where you add more vertices to the terrain as it gets closer to the camera, so you can move the overall shape closer to the correct value. That way you can use a smaller amount of vertices total, since distant terrain will only need a fraction. Kind of like a reverse "level of detail". That didn't come to GPUs until 2009, so it's probably done in the CPU side, and they had to portion off so it only updates some parts of the terrain every frame to not spend too much time on it and bring the frame rate down. But then that means there might be many frames until neighbouring pieces of terrain are updated, so the player has time to notice the change. The same "change just a piece per frame" logic probably causes the grass pop-in during cutscenes.
Ross please do a game dungeon about the Indiana Jones game. I remember playing it as a kid but have forgot about the plot already. But yes I know, everybody is requesting their favorite game and you are only one person. Your videos are still absolute gems and I'm re-watching them all the time.
If I may make a suggestion for your next episode of Game Dungeon, the recent Phantom Doctrine game is one I'd think you'd have fun playing and integrating into your show. Now granted, I don't remember if this Game Dungeon series is dedicated only to old, obscure games or you do cover some of the new ones (I'm a newcomer on your channel, but I have to say superb content Ross, especially Dead Game News). Phantom Doctrine is your XCOM-style game, but add Cold War espionage and globe trotting secret missions. It's been a blast so far. Digression aside, good episode once again Ross. Thanks to you, I now know there is such a thing as a Wolfhound movie, along with this priceless game gem called Requital xD
damn, i came from a Post Malone concert that i loved. I saw you uploaded a video and i forgot all amazing memoriez from event and just focused on your video. Fucking rare, you are my favourite channel, weird, i know, i have no control over that:D
as a creative type myself, a movie-to-video game adaptation seems like an interesting challenge. If you got a team that was really invested you'd probably get a great game. Unfortunately that happens pretty rarely.
You need to play Escape from Butcher Bay (Non-remastered version). It's really an amazing game. One of the best fps games out there imo. Plus its movie based. Seriously do check it out.
other name They killed the great atmosphere of the original by adding in ridiculous amounts of depth of field and bloom effects , both of which were new effects at the time. They also made everything look cartoonishly "dark".
Man, the map looks like both Evil Islands' maps (global and local) were smashed into one and didn't quite survive the process. I wonder if that was the inspiration, EE is quite a cult classic in Russia.
If you consider that around that time Lineage II was by far the most popular game in russia and nearby countries, it all makes sense, the movement, the mmo-style placement of enemies, etc.
While it's pretty much unpredictable which game you choose, the Game Dungeon has definitily covered a lot of medieval Action Rpgs so far; with Requital joining the ranks of Hinterland, Well of Souls, Dungeon Siege and Revenant. I guess you really have a fondness for these types of games.
Actually, healing potions whose only use is providing temporary HP in battle is a pretty cool mechanic. Were it coupled with any healing mechanic other than "sit still and hold a button for two minutes" I think it'd be a winner.
There needs to be a video game someday with ross as the main character and have each level be based off of game dungeon episodes, perhaps the more weird or influential game dungeons, like armed and delirious can be boss levels.
I thought Call of Pripyat's voice acting was bad. Compared to this, it's just bizarre and humorously awful (similar to The Chosen -- Well of Souls). Bizarre, humorously awful, and recorded in an actual studio. Other greats in bad voice acting include Resident Evil 1's localization, but good god is this a trainwreck. Between the "recording quality" and the actual deliveries, this has to be one of the worst because it doesn't even carry any accidental entertainment value.
I seriously don't know why the english voice acting in CoP is so bad. I thought it was the actors being cheap and lacking talent, but you can hear a few of them in A New Beginning and they sound much better there.
I think english localisation in CoP was very rushed as it wasn't expected to hit the western shelves. Not because of the actors. I played with Ukrainian voicing and it was pretty OK. Atleast compared to Chosen.
@@nathanclark2424 Yep. It was us, ukrainians, voice acting in english localization. The problem is that not everyone on the team knew english, so, usually, they were handed a "transcription" of their texts. As far, as I understand this.
I felt the console game of superman returns almost fits into that list of requirements for a movie based game, in it you fight everything that wasn't in the movie.
Hey Ross, you'd happen to know a link to the soundtrack? i'm a fan of that sax track that was playing at the shore but i can't find the OST to it on youtube :/
I was the one the people pointing this out but real talk, with everything wrong with this game, I bet the 'voice actors' would pronounce it this way too
Hey can you read me, you've never left the game! QUICK you have been there for far too long, you gotta press "Okay" to exit Don't click "Yes" that never closed the game many are still trapped!
Reminder that Ross died long ago and the mold took over his body. This mold-based Ross is only making videos to keep up appearances. Soon the age of mold will begin, and he will personally welcome us all to the family.
I love how Wolfhound ended the bad ending cutscene with his arms crossed. "Wolfhound has lost his soul and turned evil!" Wolfhound: "heh, well I'll be damned!" (Cue laugh track.)
The game's actually based on the book. The Russian version just took advantage of the fact a movie had come out at the same time and tried to market it as the movie game, when it's not actually.
That is his first line of dialogue! He says later that he first s peaks after beating the wizard and I was like "wait... you just made a big deal of that other line he said!:
Yeah, after Ross said that I told everyone we were watching Wolfhound for family Movie Night. Unfortunately my destiny is REALLY hard to fulfill, cause I'm still looking for a copy.

Deliberate is the operative word there. He wanted to make it clear that, that time he wasn't and the viewers noticed it too.

Man, coming back and seeing that Akella logo hits WAY different after mainlining Civvie videos.
“Because a lot of art directors collectively lost their damn minds” had me laughing for 5 minutes straight Ross!
This game brought me on the edge of my seat!
How are you gonna go this whole review without mentioning the cute little bat on his shoulder. A shunned lil friend!
The answer to that is "Do you have a sword?"
*Looks to the side*
Hmmmmmmmm
I just realized, the Sun Flame Sword is the magic item you need to kill the Strahd in Ravenloft, the original adventure.
damn, i came from a Post Malone concert that i loved.
I saw you uploaded a video and i forgot all amazing memoriez from event and just focused on your video.

"I don't think there even was a beekeeper in the movie"
as a creative type myself, a movie-to-video game adaptation seems like an interesting challenge. If you got a team that was really invested you'd probably get a great game. Unfortunately that happens pretty rarely.
Very nice. Keep up the Game dungeons, these are great!
Good God that was hilarious.
Ross, your humor is transcendent. That’s all that can be said.

You need to play Escape from Butcher Bay (Non-remastered version). It's really an amazing game. One of the best fps games out there imo. Plus its movie based. Seriously do check it out.
ArcaneThinker whats wrong with the remastered one?
other name They killed the great atmosphere of the original by adding in ridiculous amounts of depth of field and bloom effects , both of which were new effects at the time. They also made everything look cartoonishly "dark".
Man, the map looks like both Evil Islands' maps (global and local) were smashed into one and didn't quite survive the process. I wonder if that was the inspiration, EE is quite a cult classic in Russia.
If having a claymore straight from Scotland counts as having a sword then perhaps I should see this movie.
Why do I feel called out about owning a sword
Back when I was a kid I had a PC with GeForce 4 MX and 512 MB RAM. There wasn't much I could run on it.
I PLAYED THE SHIT OUT OF THIS GAME.
If you consider that around that time Lineage II was by far the most popular game in russia and nearby countries, it all makes sense, the movement, the mmo-style placement of enemies, etc.

"It's easy to judge looking back" Well yeah, that's the point of looking at old games.
That scream was coming from Wolfhound, his soul got ripped out....
I just noticed the box has the "The Room" font on it.
One of the worst offenders was always ObliVIion
I remember first getting the game on release and I was so confused why it was so. Damn. BRIGHT!
the soundtrack in this game is really good
[shouts triumphantly at high frequencies]
There needs to be a video game someday with ross as the main character and have each level be based off of game dungeon episodes, perhaps the more weird or influential game dungeons, like armed and delirious can be boss levels.
that sounds like it would be fun to make
I thought Call of Pripyat's voice acting was bad.
ALLOOOOOOOHHA!
@@PrusskiyMir were the Ukrainian actors the ones who voiced the english version? Or was that different actors? I dont have a good ear for this.
@@nathanclark2424 Yep. It was us, ukrainians, voice acting in english localization. The problem is that not everyone on the team knew english, so, usually, they were handed a "transcription" of their texts.
As far, as I understand this.
one exception to this is Toy Story 3. That game is a hidden gem!
I felt the console game of superman returns almost fits into that list of requirements for a movie based game, in it you fight everything that wasn't in the movie.

I mispronounced "Requital" the entirety of the video, oops. At least I'm in good company, the game itself didn't get everything perfect either.

Hey Ross, you'd happen to know a link to the soundtrack? i'm a fan of that sax track that was playing at the shore but i can't find the OST to it on youtube :/
I was the one the people pointing this out but real talk, with everything wrong with this game, I bet the 'voice actors' would pronounce it this way too
holy shit I can't help imagining the NPCs as players rp'ing with shitty mics. it fits too well

The game's actually based on the book. The Russian version just took advantage of the fact a movie had come out at the same time and tried to market it as the movie game, when it's not actually.
