There is some written history of the Afar people; albeit written by others. The earliest confirmed reference was by Ibn Sa'id who mentioned they lived in the general area spanning from Suakin, Sudan and as far south as Zeila in Somalia. The Afar carry the traditions of their ancestors like the Somalis orally. If you take the biblical account seriously you may find examples, but it's difficult to get a clear understanding with parables. There are many different subgroups that exist in within the Oromos, Bejas, Somalis, ect. Why is it hard to understand that the same exists within Afar hierarchy? I'm sure there may be some intermixing between border ethnicities. However, it makes no difference if they are "Semitic or Cushitic" speaking unless you can provide an example to why it would be significant in their origin. Also, the historical region of Wollo was partially absorbed into the Afar region. Don't forget the Raya and Yejju people who the Oromos commonly associate with who now speak Tigrigna and Amarigna(you can form your own conclusion there). Interesting that you refer to Saho. The Erob speak Saho and yet they have some cultural relation to the Tigrai. They even take up similar names. What is your interest in Afar history? Are you an Afar?
