Bringing An Abandoned Gold Mine Back To Life: Part 21 of ?

  • It has been a little while since I have posted an update, but we have been doing a lot of the same (an endless cycle of drill, blast, haul out the waste rock, repeat) and I have already shown that multiple times. So, I like for there to be something a little different or new in order to try and keep the videos interesting… That is also why I tend to keep the actual mining videos shorter than the exploring videos. Even the most keen mining enthusiasts would likely have their eyes glaze over if I had shown the full forty minutes or however long it was of us disassembling the Jackleg drill.
    We’re farther along now, but in the drilling scene in this video, we were probably about 40% done with this side drift at the 1600. The goal is to push ahead for another one hundred feet or so and then to carve out a drill station. The drilling will give us an idea of the location and condition of the abandoned workings above. Our geologist is confident that we’ll be able to block out good ore reserves while we’re drilling to locate and assess the caved workings. However, I think he is underestimating the capabilities of the old timers. We’ll see…
    I had hoped that we would intercept some of the caved abandoned workings on this level as we started running this drift. Specifically, I was thinking of those caved drifts that wing out to the left as one is headed back to the 1600 station. However, it now seems that those drifts did not parallel the main adit. If you’ll recall, those caved side drifts are a mystery as no maps survive (or ever existed?) of those old workings.

    Several kind viewers have asked about donating to help cover some of the many expenses associated with exploring these abandoned mines. Inspired by their generosity, I set up a Patreon account. So, if anyone would care to chip in, I’m under TVR Exploring on Patreon.
    Thanks for watching!
    *****
    Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them - nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.
    These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever.
    I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!

      I have some good footage of it from when we're opening up the station and I have room to stand to the side. You can finally see what it is doing at the end... The footage from standing near the controls is limited because it puts out so much water vapor and so it is impossible to see what is happening in the distance. Tough for the operator too! You have to do everything by feel.

    I like the series bringing a gold mine back to life.
    I have a tip for you if you want to waterproof your wooden beams take boiled linseed oil and apply it to the would just like you were painting beam with the boiled linseed oil and now your wooden beams are waterproof, it needs to be applied once or twice a year I use this method to winterize the tiki statues I make.
    You can do this to the wood before you put it in the mine, also you can take Uncle Henry's tar and apply it to the top and the bottom of your wooden beams.
    Good luck with your gold mining.
    Also you should have some guests, on your mind show, like Dan, better known as boxy from mine explorers.

    Can't stand when Nats, and mosquitoes get so thick you breathe them in and they're literally in every opening in your head before you get away.
    Use to happen when I use to fish for big bass all night in northeast texas.
    Be going along on trolling motor, just casting quietly, and all of a sudden you were in clouds of seemed like millions of mosquitoes just buzzing all around you.
    Then few seconds of kicking trolling motor up a little faster, and they're no where to be heard.
    So back to peaceful fishing, and only thing that gave you a hint that they were still around.
    Is the bats flying around would hit your line as you worked the lures back from where you cast it to.
    Occasionally you could see them fly across the face of the moon, because we fished the full moon in the heat of the Texas summers here.

  • @joesmith1922

    Good vid! Thanks for posting.
    Why do you choose burning fuse over electric caps?

    • @Porty1119
      @Porty1119 11 місяців тому +1

      The safety fuse sets off a cap which initiates the detcord main (should be tied into a ring - I don't like horseshoe mains as the risk of cutoff is higher). The detcord initiates the shock tube (also known as Nonel) in each hole, which then initiates the booster which itself finally detonates the ANFO. Electric caps are extremely dangerous as any stray current from static electricity or RF can initiate them. Electronic detonators are safer but very expensive. Some large companies like them but I've been thoroughly unimpressed.

    • @joesmith1922
      @joesmith1922 11 місяців тому

      .@@Porty1119 Thanks for that. You have an interesting explanation.
      I've used electric caps underground for many years with zero problems - they are simple and reliable, IMHO. Static electricity shouldn't be an issue in that mine anyway! RF is not an issue underground, either.
