External fertilisation occurs, in which the males chases the females in the courting phase. The hormones released by the males induces the female to release her eggs, & then the males take the opportunity to spray their sperm over the eggs released. Given this breeding mechanism, the actual fertilisation rate in the wild is actually pretty low. Hence, the ratio of 2males to 1 female seem to work pretty well in captivity breeding.
