Iam from Langney moved from Eastbourne over 20 odd years ago, watching videos like yours pulls at the heart strings I know those grid works in churchdale road , great video subscribed cheers
The line used to serve the Gas Works And ran through Bird's Eye when it was there. I remember the railway during the sixties when I used to cut round the town to visit friends in Northbourne Road.
Excellent video, many thanks. As an aside, when we were kids in the early 1970's there was a rough overgrown lane that ran along the back of the destructor works, and in the long grass there were a number of defused German bombs from WW2 that had been dumped there presumably during the war itself. As kids of course we found them endlessly fascinating and fully intended one day to 'liberate' them, but obviously they were too big and bulky for us kids to move them!
Great video, very interesting. I live just down the road and have done for nearly sixty years. I remember walking along the old ballast line towards what is now Bridgemere. As kids we used to go and play on what we called the Donkey fields which was the grass and bushland at the bottom of Churchdale Road. Happy Days!
Me too! I was a Churchdale Road boy back in the day, though we called them the Horses Fields - now Bridgemere Estate. Thanks Matthew for telling me a couple of things even I didn’t know about the area where I grew up!
I have vague memories of the Destructor Works on St Phillips Avenue - I certainly remember the railway line and gates and the Gas Works. Thanks for sharing this.
Great local video. Thanks for the informative vid. A friend of mine lives around that area, Maybe near yourself. Apparently the works used to smell bad so I have heard?
