Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.
"Creating music for a world that doesn't exist..." Absolutely spot on!
I’ve never heard a more accurate summation of their music. It’s perfect! 😂
So true!! I've always been transported somewhere else when I listen to Yes - for 45+ years!
Very well said 😄
Jon Anderson is the J.R.R. Tolkien of music
She's right!!! But give me that world any day!!!!
So much talent... nothing in the last 30 years comes close too what these guys could do.
50 years!
Absolutely, that lineup was one for the ages.
One of my favorite Yes songs. So beautiful.
Don't ever worry about not "understanding" Jon's lyrics. He has said he chooses words primarily for how they sound with the melody, but some of us think he's channeling them from some divine place. Even if our brains can't quite make sense of the words, our hearts can.
I'm pretty sure Jon chooses sometimes for the sounds to be the primordial element, but other times it is the lyrics. Many times its both.
I just wrote something similar above. Then I saw your comment. Well said.
Great answer.
👍ha ha great comment. Spot on.
"So cautiously at first, and then so high / As he spoke my spirit climbed into the sky / I bid it to return to hear your wondrous stories." I love that!
Steve Howe's guitar playing at the end is magical.
It's some wonderful playing with some Wes Montgomery inspired octace playing. His voicing is so individualistic.
@@johncase2408 Rick Wakeman's keyboards was magical, also
lead singer is jon anderson look out for him and " vangellis " singing " find my way home " it really is a great song.........
Vangelis' The Friends of Mr Cairo is also excellent.
They put out 4 albums together… they’re all brilliant. Then Vangelis on his own… Chariots Of Fire, Blade Runner, 1492, Mask, Mythodea, Antarctica, China, El Greco (2) and more… so much wealth in electronic symphonic music. And yet it is said that only 5% of all Vangelis’ music has ever been released. He can record an improvised album in one sitting.
Jon Anderson with that amazing voice, thanks for the reaction KSO.
Decades ago, when I first heard this magnificent tune I thought, "Gandalf telling stories to a group of Hobbits."
And I thought of the elves of Rivendell, they'd be happy and wise enough to make this music, lol.
@@veganapiranha7365 when I listen to this I always picture Frodo in a little boat going to see the elves
Have you heard "Misty Mountains" by Peter Hollans with bass singer Tim Faust. It's from "The Hobbit" movie.
@@bobr4987 -- I have heard of it. I will give it a listen. Thanks.
Nailed it
Yes' music can be very spiritual. When Jon is on stage he oozes spirituality. Either with Yes or without. I've seen him both ways there's no denying it. His solo works are too. His album Short Stories is great.
Fantastic band.
Rick Wakeman's keyboard work is fantastic and Jon Anderson's voice is amazing. You should check out State of Independence which he recorded with the film composer Vangelis. On that you can hear Donna Summer praising the song at the end. Of course she did her own version just afterwards!
Although she did a version of the song, that wasn't Donna Summer speaking at the end of it, it was the background singer.
So did Chrysie Hyndes
I am always drawn back to YES because of this sense of exuberance and joy, Rock music has not really gone there without being whimsical or shallow. YES had their own kind of power and fury that lifts one up instead of the usual aggressive emotional exorcisms. YES is for those music fans who have ventured enough into the dark and yearn for those rare sunny uplands.
There is a line from the song 'Release Release' that speaks their message:
"Further the right! further the right! further the right!
-Of all of creation!!!"
Wow I remember hearing this song!! Beautiful harmonies!!❤️🎶❤️
We bought tickets for every night they performed (in LA) during the GFTO tour. We did that for Yes ever after. Such heart & virtuosity, I bet if you searched you will find Steve prowling the stage on his slide during the title song. Liked your "Creating Music..." comment, Rick Wakeman described Jon a someone working to save this planet while living on another".
Rick is right and it is true!
One word describes YES AWESOME.😁
Absolutely, YES is an amazing experience
Yes!!! We love Yes!!!
Yes,yes ,yes ....fantastic music ...wonderful
During your analysis I remembered a quote from Rick Wakeman about Jon Anderson: "He’s the only guy I know trying to save this planet whilst living on another one !!" This "positive soul" is reflected in all of Yes's older songs, even if they have chaotic passages.
Rick got that right. Sun worship seems to be one of his themes. I love sitting in the sun but I can dispense with sun worship. This particular song is pretty much a perfect song.
I heard Wakeman in another interview say that NASA could’ve saved a bunch of money on studying space if they’d just simply asked Jon. 😂
"Saving the Planet" ? From what ?
Pardon me, but man who God created cannot destroy the Planet which God created. "Wow, is that deep" LOL
@@anthonyc7045 THAT is pretty deep.
I decided on this YES reaction because I love this song! It reminds me of the song that Jon Anderson did for the Ridley Scott movie “Legend” starring Tom Cruise and Mia Sara. Exactly K.S.O it’s other worldly and puts you in a magical mystical state of mind 🧚♂️
This is really yours? Good pick.
@@wessew6185 no sorry I saw she 3 Yes song reactions in a row and decided to watch this first. I didn’t choose it.
@@edwardhannah Well...you should have! Lol. Do better next time...if possible.
@@wessew6185 wow that was rough I like it! 😉
Many of the Yes lyrics are written to work on an abstract and emotional level that really gets your imagination going. By leaving them open to interpretation it lets your own mind create part of the story. Some lyrics are about finding god, understanding god, etc. Jon said about this song: "Seeing a very young Deborah and Damion asleep in the early morning before I went to the studio, I sang the song in my head all the way to the studio in Montreux, Switzerland, where we recorded ‘Going for the One’. By the time the guys came, I had the song finished. It revolves around being told how wonderful life truly is by my spirit ‘Teacher’."
I've learned to take Jon's lyrics like poetry.
He paints a picture, the words evoke a feeling, but can't be followed literally.
.
Except maybe the Gates of Delirium, or South Side Of THe Sky.
Close to the edge is a must.I get up i get down Rip Chris Squire
I've been a big Yes fan since the early 70s, when I was 8 or so, been part of my life since. I think they have a very positive message, and is uplifting to their fans.
I love this song!! Thank you 😁
When you beg someone's leave you're asking for their permission, it's a slightly antiquated phrase. I beg your leave in this case is saying MAY I hear your wondrous stories.
The look of joy on your face in this reaction reflected the way that song makes me feel inside as well. Thanks for sharing! And Steve Howe with a lute is still a great thing.....
This song always gives me goosebumps.
Been trying to understand Jon's lyrics for 50 years. It can't be done! Lol!😎
LOL. It can. Think of poems. Think, words have different meaning because they do. Also, if you google what a song means, that may help.
@@lorriesardinia5302 Why? That's the point! Love Jon's cosmic mind.😎

@@lesblatnyak5947 37, I mean 36. Lol!😎
@@lesblatnyak5947 Just watched an Awaken reaction. I actually beat you to one!😎
One of my favourite bands. Other great songs are: "Madrigal ", " Soon ", " Don't kill the whale " etc...
Future Times/Rejoice too
Your response to this wonderful song made me cry today. Thanks for enjoying it so.
One of those wondrous melodies that always existed. Yes , happily , plucked this from the ether. Some songs already exist , just waiting for the right mind to “pick” them out.
The Whole Album makes a wonderful suite. "Parallels"!!
Music journalists have written articles page,s long describing Yes,s. Music. And this musically savy insightful Lady has outdone them all and explained it better with just one sentence. Yes make music for a world that doesn't,t exist. Respect
Just simply wonderful 😊
Not a regular lute, it's a Spanish Laud. I have one, but it took me years before I could find one, because Steve misidentified it on the album credits and in his book, The Steve Howe Guitar Collection. It was a gift from his sister for his birthday when he was 16, that she brought back from a trip to Spain and I guess she didn't get the name and just bought it on looks. This is also the instrument that Steve plays at the beginning of "I've Seen All Good People" and he plays it on Tales from Topographic Oceans, along with a real lute!. So glad to see you loving this awesome song. One of my Yes faves! Thanks
Peace from SF
As usual, another exceptionally joyous, and beautiful song from Yes. I never understand their lyrics, but I don't care if I understand lyrics or not. I can sense a pattern from the words used. I know it's joyous, and their music sends my spirits soaring.
KSO .....Thank You!
True magic.
I'm 61 and first heard this when I was 15. It still sounds as good now in 2023 and it did in 1977.
No better keyboard player than Rick ever existed😉Superb.
These guys in addition to being incredible musicians were channeling celestial energy in almost everything they did. It's a parallel dimension.
Jon is, was and always will be YES ✨❤✨
Jon Anderson wrote that song in Switzerland when Yes was recording Going For The One. I read that he saw his kids sleeping in the morning before he went to the studio and wondered what they were dreaming about. It was a beautiful day in Montreux and by the time he got to the studio he had most of the song worked out in his head. I hope that helps, and I loved your reaction to the song!!
So Brittish'd out. All the arpeggios. My favorite live "short" Yes for sure! Squire loves it!
Chris Squire was out of this world - as both a bass player and backing vocalist.
I've always thought the song was about the thrill of listening to the parables of Jesus, (my forgiver,) which spoke of a "lands not far or lands they were in his mind," (the Kingdom of Heaven?)
Very plausible. ...Or something Jesus-like..
RIP Chris Squire
Awaken from this same album is a MUST listen. It's one of several masterpieces from YES! Now I've been told you have done it already. Cool!
I remember really not wanting to like this album when it came out (Bill Bruford had left the group and I was ticked) - but every flippin' tune on it is BEAUTIFUL. Every one.
If you are going to stick with Yes, 'And You and I' and 'Close To the Edge' are essential.
Plus about 20 or 30 more!
And Awaken.
It's a pleasure listening with YOU. You do not keep interrupting and stopping the music constantly. Thank you!!
Jon Anderson...what a wonderful voice
You nailed it girl. Playing for a world that Should exist!
As to the meaning of the lyrics, I don't know if this helps, but this is from Wikipedia:
"Wonderous Stories" is a ballad solely credited to Anderson. He wrote the song during "a beautiful day" while staying in Montreux, "one of those days you want to remember for years afterwards". It was then when the words "wonderous stories" entered his head, which he later used for the song's lyrics. He noted the song's meaning as "the joys of life, as opposed to the uptightedness of some aspects of life" that was inspired by romantic stories and "a kind of dream sequence". Author Bill Martin believed the song is about the importance of hearing and listening.
Howe commented that Anderson wrote the song during "his Renaissance period" when he was into a "classical ... feeling to things" and noted its strong "classical framework". The song features Howe playing a 12-string Portuguese guitar, which he had used on "I've Seen All Good People", and an electric guitar which he plays at its conclusion. Wakeman plays the Polymoog, a polyphonic analogue synthesiser. White contributed the idea of the drums and bass playing on odd beats.
It is often when I'm at my lowest...I hear Jon Anderson's voice. I can pick myself up and brush off the weight of the world.
Poetry at its best. Listen a bunch more and you'll get it. Everybody that loves Yes gets it"!!!
Yes! My fav since mid ‘70s. Always soul beautifying. ❤️💜
A world where love is first and last, the music of Yes.😇🙏, Might be what angels listen to.
This track was released as a single and reached no7 in the UK. The album is their best ever.
I never can keep my eyes dry when I hear this song
The video for "Wonderous Stories" was the first official one for Yes, other than the concert film, "Yessongs" (1973). One of the few times we see Jon Anderson (lead vocals) playing an acoustic guitar. Beautiful song that he still performs as part of his solo act. Another one is the closing section, "Soon," of the side-long epic, "The Gates of Delirium" (1974), although it is the single edit version. Jon possesses one of the most gorgeous singing voices!! 💜💜
I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!
Exactly - "music for a world that doesn't exist."
The Yes Starship trooper live Lugano jazz festival....
I loved your comments...there's really no literal meaning to the words, you just feel them or you don't. I forgot how unique and beautiful Jon Anderson's voice is, it's been years since I've heard Yes. Someone also suggested " State of Independence " by Jon & Vangelis, another beautiful song from a strange collaboration...it showcases his voice with a non-progrock background
You have hit the nail right on the head.
What a beautiful song. I love the way Yes puts together songs. Their classical training really comes through.
Jon´s from another world, he´s out of this earth civilization
For me, this is undoubtly one of the most amazing live perfomances, truly amazing musicianship, perfection really.
Whenever I see Yes....a Band of stunning musicians, with a background to back up their brilliance...
Ooo! one of the tunes of my youth. Try "Close to the Edge" by Yes. The album covers at pure fantasy Roger Dean 40 years before the film "Avatar"
pure art and creativity
You'll love the singer here, Jon Anderson collaborate with Vangelis. Two great songs that come to mind ( and the lyrics You'll understand) are:
So long ago, So clear
And
Shine for me.
Goosebumps are guaranteed!
A Yes-World !!! : D
You should definitely do Turn of the Century from the same album Going for the One! It's such a beautiful song you would truly love it!
One of the most beautiful love songs ever written bar none.
You are so full of love and light. I can't get enough of you or your channel. You've really helped me deal w/my depression and anxiety
"They create music for a world that doesn't exist." Beautifully said! Cool reaction!
Welcome to YESWORLD.
He is describing personal moments with The Creator, as a young man seeks out a wise old man to hear his "Wonderous Stories", but Jon here speaks of his "Forgiver" left open to the
listener to decide who may or may not be represented by that word. We all have our own imagination of what "Utopia" would be, but whatever the Creator has to yet show us, I am sure
it is well beyond what any could imagine. "Soon, oh Soon, The Light, pass within, and soothe this endless night. I'm waiting for you, our reason to be here" Maybe everyone else lives on
a different planet, and Jon's is just calling them back from their foolishness. From the first time I heard Yes in 1974 when I was 12, it was as if God had sent me this music, and I
immediately became part of The Choir. "Gold stainless nail, torn through the distance of man". Jon's lyrics are so dense, that books could be written from a few verses.
What a great description or interpretation of what you got from the song and their songs.
Jon have angelic voice, he sounds like angel. Greetings from Poland.
Check out (YES - Owner of a Lonely Heart)
GLORIOUS!
Isnt it just one of the best songs youve ever heard and seen on youtube?...These genius players are in Mozart's league and no doubt Wolgang would LOVE their music guaranteed!
So...
This song and "Awaken" comprise the B side of Yes' Going for the One album. My *personal* interpretation of the two tracks is that "Wondrous Stories" opens the side by telling of the subject's journey to find and reaching his spiritual guide and teacher. "Awaken" is the subject having absorbed and attained nirvana from his spiritual journey. For me, the two songs should always be played together, as they tell a full story.
In an interview long ago, Jon said that he often uses words as a painter uses colours. His whole intention is to paint pictures using words. He admits that the lyrics often do not make sense in and of themselves, but the feelings that they evoke are meant to draw you into "a world that does not exist." When you listen to his lyrics, just let yourself go. It makes much more sense.
Saw them live back in the days. Great bass player !!!!
Yes ! Yes ! And Yes !
Great reaction, RIP bassist Chris Squire, cancer sucks.
What a beautiful reaction.
I've had the album since it was released in 1977, but never saw the music video for it ( MTV didn't exist back then...)
When the angels finally do turn up we will say hey they sound like Jon Anderson
As Rick Wakeman (the keyboardist) says about Jon Anderson (Lead singer) he's the only person trying to save the world while living on a different planet.. LOL
With Steve doing his best Wes Montgomery impression!
Doesn’t get any better.
If people who've never heard them ask me who are they like, I don't have an answer. I just say you have to listen to them because they as Yes are unique There's no other band like them.
You nailed it young lady. Perfect response to a beautiful piece of music.
Jon’s songs most always come from Spirit and it’s usually what he’s trying to express. That said, a few comments down Roseanne Smith pretty much nailed it. I just watched Andy & Alex go through the same thing with Procol Harum’s Whiter Shade of Pale. Sometimes you just let whatever message there is in a song wash over and through you without letting your mind/intellect fret too much about the meaning of the words.
Your analysis and comments are very insightful!
