- For more information about this instrument, contact the builder, Jack Peters, at www.jackpeters.com/. This is a replica of a fretted clavichord built in Frankfurt around 1670 by Israel Gellinger. The naturals are made of olive wood and the accidentals of ebony. This instrument was just built, and I am "breaking it in" for Jack. I transposed the Preludio from Bach's Violin Partita No. 3 from E major to G major to fit the range of the instrument. The clavichord is extremely responsive, and I find its warm, fruity tone to be peculiarly attractive.
it's pretty mesmerizing to watch the levers
Eat some magic shrooms and watch it! Wow!
C.P.E. Bach: "Every keyboardist should own a good harpsichord and a good clavichord", and:
"a good clavichordist makes an accomplished harpsichordist, but not the reverse".
Freewheeler ! Perhaps so. Just make the tone selection on your Casio keyboard. No need to buy expensive old junk that take up space in your room.
Thomas Pick Digital keyboards just don’t match up to real instruments. The sound, the feel, the tuning, the look, the ambience. Speaking as someone who switched to clavichord and spinet from his digital piano and never looked back.
Every keyboardist should own a Rhodes and a Clavinet.
Rhythmicons: And a Hammond.
@@chrissansum I told my wife she should be really glad that I'm not into Hammonds. Analog synths on the other hand....
Great to finally hear Bach music played on his favourite instrument - with dynamics!
I wonder if Bach ever played this prelude on a clavichord. I bet he did. It's very joyful. The little vibrati are delightful.
I'm sure that Bach knew its value: he knew that it was worth transcribing into a few different instrumentations.
Grand music, on an intimate scale! I love the idea of Bach's huge universe of expression in the form of a delicate, personal instrument. Clavichord was Bach's favorite (next to the organ, of course), and the image of him sitting by candlelight playing for himself while the family slept is certainly magical. Great videos. Glad I found them.
Even though I like this performance, one has to marvel mainly at the music itself, and the genius of Bach in writing this for essentially a single lined instrument. The forward motion of it and the flowing invention of different ideas is brilliant.
That was beautiful. I imagined being one the first people the composer let hear this piece. Especially around some other musicians like "...thou thinketh thine skills are formidable? Well peepeth this..." lol...
Probably not too far from the truth. Musicians certainly could have big egos, even then!
simply amazing! Played very well :) Clavichord has such a wonderful sound ^.^
I so enjoy returning to this video. thank you very much.
What a cool instrument. And such wonderful playing.
Thank you , this is really nice. The plunk of the keys adds to the rhythm. I loved the vibrato at 3;00. The clavichord is the only traditional keyboard that can make a vibrato. Really nice moment there. In this camera angle, the keys appear to barely clear the key slip, and it seems to limit the use of the thumbs.
They hardly used the thumbs.
This is one of my favorite bits of music of all time. Thank you for playing this l!!
Great performance! I loved how relaxing and beautiful the pedal point parts sounded.
I bought a keyboard, which has a 'clavichord' setting. It sounded so strange and unlikely for a stringed instrument that I thought it must be wrong. The bass notes were so strong and sonorous with incredible sustain. So I started looking on UA-cam for genuine clavichords being played. And here we are.
Well, it's not the same of course, given the size of this instrument it's not greatly surprising that it has a much more metallic sound - but really, it's not so far off and the larger ones are even closer.
I'd love to own one. Out of the question sadly, but it's nice to hear this tiny instrument played so well. One of my favourite pieces too.
Ever since I found out about this instrument I've been hooked. A piece of baroque history, modest minimalistic mechanisms, and a little bit of ASMR from the little woody "plinks". What's not to love?
wir danken dir, Ryan Layne Whitney, wir danken dir!
This is one of my very favorite pieces of music, and you played it wonderfully :D
Such a pleasant, mellow sound!
I hadn't heard the Preludio played on a keyboard before - thanks for that - it's wonderful.
Great reminder of design, technological, engineering, skillful craftsmanship, and other foundation-setting advancements that are brilliantly revealed in even the most ancient of musical instruments. Thanks for your poetic mastery of this musical interlude.
Этот инструмент прекрасен. Он сохранился до наших дней. Отлично! Я обожаю старинные инструменты.
I believe it is a replica of the original
Very well done. I admire your calm touch.
An excellent version of th beautiful piece of music
That was delightful and wonderful
It sounds so live.......so in the moment......the notes bend so slightly......what a beautiful instrument and what a player. Such a lovely piece. No wonder Bach is voted the nations favourite composer. I want a clavichord from seeing this. They are awesome!
Beautiful, lovely sound......
I came here because I'm studying baroque music in music appreciation class and was curious about the sound of the clavichord. What a great sound!
it is quite fascinating to hear how he creates dynamics on this instrument
It is even more fascinating to hear a good harpsichordist creating dynamics on his instrument, where no dynamics are expected.
This is a beautiful instrument and performance
Wonderful sound and the music is very nice as well.
Excellent job!! Thank you very much for sharing!
ok, I'm just going to say again, I've played the piano for 20 years, and I learned a new way to play Bach from watching this movie. Excellent, thanks.
A masterpiece of harmonic ingenuity.
Nice playing on a very beautiful instrument. Thanks for sharing this with us...
Blown away....wow! Wonderful instrument, Jack and fine playing Ryan...10 stars!!
Wow, beautifully played.
absolutely beautiful.
this intrument is very unique. i like how the sound is quite difforent from the sound of a harpsichord. also i like how its quiet so you wont distirb people in the nieghborood. Very good insterment, excelent playing. Brava!
What a beatiful instrument and very nice playing aswell !!
Wonderful! beautiful sound
This instrument sounds lovely!
Amazing sound, in the fact that Bach would've had something similar in his residence! Brilliant playing!!!!!
Thats great!
and the view of the "wave like" hammer/levers is really cool, plus youve got great fingers totally commanding the miniature keyboard!
beautiful musical instrument
Truly splendid my brother!
Masterful and genius.
Love it ! Bravo !
Fantastic!
Enjoyed this so much, fantastic :-)
Wow. Stunning.
Beautiful!
Love it!
Genial me encanta el clavicordio
Excellent performance my friend!
Amazing ❤
that was lovely
It's charming! I bet its keys smell lovely too.
Very even playing, impressive. Great piece too :-)
This is so satisfying
Absolute class!!!!!
The clavichord is one of my favourite instruments and also the only keyboard instrument that has the vibrato! Most of Bach's music sound better on the clavichord rather then on piano, organ, harpsichord, spinette, virginal, etc... 🎹🎵🎼🎶
In addition to what sosome57 said, the clavichord also sounds different from piano because the resonating chamber is much smaller and goes parallel to the keys rather than back like a grand piano. the sound resonates in a much smaller, shallower space. Also this design makes the string lengths shorter. The shape is why the decay time is shorter than pianos.
Thank you.
congratulations!
Sounds a bit like "Song for a found Harmonium" in the middle ;O) - Thanks a lot
Hermosísimo.
Fantastic!!! It may not be Rachmaninoff's transcription as far as added harmonies, but I think you've definitely got him beat with regard to choice of instrument!
A well chosen piece, well played on a well chosen instrument!
Fascinating. The sounds is somewhat reminiscent of a guitar...
Brilliant.
Crikey!! A little gentle calisthenics for the right hand before breakfast! Interesting to see the workings of a clavichord when "under stress" as it were!
I ADORE ancient instuments
Very cool
Merci !
Love playing the clav setting on my new digital piano… ☮🔥
So you should, but that will be a Hohner Clavinet simulation, not a clavichord.
sounds a bit like a mandolin.
in fact they are the same components
It's amazing, it's so hard to play on Clavichord!!
@EmilyRules971 There are no pedals on the clavichord: if you want to hold a note, you have to keep your finger on it. The tone of the clavichord has a short decay, so a note dies away much more quickly than on a piano.
Why are you being a snob? I think you're being very helpful sharing your knowledge & enthusiasm & ― incidentally ― thanking the performer. I also love the clavichord. I wish we could hear more of it on UA-cam. I'm glad to see that there are some other people posting clavichord videos now. In Bach's time, pedal clavichords were fairly popular & used for practising organ music rather than paying organ blowers! & a lot of string instrumental music found its way on to the organ through this route.
Don't mean to be a snob, but the clavichord actually taps the strings from beneath with what is similar to the tip of a flat blade screwdriver. In doing so, it acts much like a fret on a guitar. Note that at the end he presses up and down on the keys to provide a bit of vibrato - the tangents are pressing against the strings from beneath and he's bending the strings with additional pressure. Fantastic instrument, fantastic performance! You play very well. Thanks!
interesting sonud. Very nice!
The dynamic range is surprising.
Yeah! Rock that clavichord!
I want one!
Спасибо.
J.adore!
Great tone!
No buzziness.
Прекрасно! 😳👍
What an incredibly strange sound a clavichord has; should definately use this for a progressive rock composition one of these days; thanks for the wonderful video :)
Did you do it
presioso
Brilliant
For an strange reason I love classical music.
This same music was used by Bach as a Sinfonia to one of the Cantatas, BWV 29, Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir.
Great!
天啊 奇才...好棒👍👍👍
very beautiful instrument and played great. Have you edited the piece by yourself
I loved that and anything by Bach but sometimes I get the impression that he was writing excercises as much as melodies. I love anything on the harpsichord. It needs to be revived. Who Agrees ??
As a harpsichord player myself, I very much agree, although this is not a harpsichord; it's a clavichord. Bach certainly wrote some keyboard pieces that were intended to exercise his pupils' fingers and improve their tecnique (the inventions and sinfonias, as an example). I don't believe this to be the case for the majority of his music, though.
And sometimes Bach music sounds like an improvisation, writted afterwards.
The Goldberg Variations and the piano Partitas are titled Clavier Ubung. Ubung is exercise in German. The inventions and sinfonias are also referred to as exercises.
It's been revived. They are made all over the western world.
Dean Guilberry Mr. Guilberry, Ubung doesn’t mean anything in German. What you are referring to is an Übung, with an umlaut.
@pyr666 That's the fault of the mic, recording. I have a replica clavichord (a Zuckermann) and the action noise is not at all that obvious in the room when it is just played. to hear what it really sounds like, turn the vol. down until you almost can't hear. The actual musical sounds in a quiet room is much louder, but you almost can't hear the action at all. Here's an aside: play for about an hour all by yourself & just when you've entered clavichord nirvana, the phone rings. It's like a bomb.
As the poster notes, this is a brand-new instrument he's "playing in." It needs more work on the keyboard, which you can only do after playing it for hours and hours. A fully played-in and well regulated clavichord keyboard is considerably quieter.
Beutiful !!!
Never seen a clavichord before. An interesting looking instrument despite the lack of dynamics. Unlike the later upright pianos you don't have much of a cover for the strings. All throughout the performance you can see the picks plugging the strings.
When transposed to a G from the original E you only have 1 # in the key signature instead of 4. Heard this piece on guitar & violin before but never on a clavichord.
I love the version of this in the sinfonia to cantata #28. Oops. I meant cantata 29, of course
@MrLordHasta No, those are olive wood naturals, with ebony wood accidentals.
With practice, one learns to adjust very quickly. My instruments have a variety of key sizes.
