  • Only 11 of Germany's 1,445 container ship captains are female. 26-year-old Julia Petzold is hoping to join them. She's second-in-command on the carrier vessel Grietje, and is hoping to be made captain within the next five years.

    I liked the job that the German lady was learning on that freighter. What great opportunities there are for women in today’s world. The women that trained to captain cruise ships also have rewarding careers. Thank you for having such inspirational videos to watch. Hope that there will be more.

    I always think of Captain Janeway when I think of a woman captain... But seriously though it's freaking awesome even though I'm a guy but i find that women can actually be much better leaders than men in certain cases because they can show a lot of empathy showing their strength in leadership. My father ditched my mom when I was still in grade 2 so I know how important strong women are and what able leaders they are!

    I was in the British merchant navy as a deckhand for 28 years (1962-90) and believe me it takes many years to become a Captain. You have go through the ranks beginning as cadet/3rd mate/2nd mate/chief mate, and the after a few years as chief mate you may get a chance at Captain. All this take years and years to reach, and you would NOT be in yours twenties, more like in your late forties. They DO NOT hand out Captain jobs to anyone willy nilly, you have to earn it, and that takes a lot of experience and many years.

    How did she become a navigating officer when she uses spectacles? Years ago you needed unaided vision (20/20?). Good luck to her. Bachelor Degree in Nautical Science and needs 5 more years study and sea service before she can become Captain.

    • @aldocesarbenega9812
      @aldocesarbenega9812 9 років тому +2

      Many among us think that 20/20 vision is somewhat "superior" capacity, concerning visual acuity. However, it's only the mean, normal human vision. Nowadays, I don't think there is any problem with the spectacles.

    • @Spiritboymark
      @Spiritboymark 8 років тому

      +Richard Boudville I think, dead 20/20 visual acuity is not really a mandatory requirement nowadays.. they're rather more inclined to the restriction with the color blindness part. :)

      +hoshino here in my country philippines its very defferent from what other countries did. if you're here in the philippines you need to go to school first before you need to get a job in a ship. there is no like fishing boat here like what i saw in America or in other country have. here in philippines also there are many requirements also before you can apply a job in sea they make it a bussiness that's why like me is can't find a job easy. I love other country because even f they dont have a license they can still find a jod like in the sea and they can get a good salary. hope i am in the country like that.

      There may be more than one language on Earth (@Azzakurah), but basic knowledge of the English language is a requirement under STCW 95, which was enacted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). It just so happens that the IMO chose English as the language of the sea. There are certain phrases and words that mariners must know in order to communicate with other vessels. Words such as port, starboard, ahead, astern, bow, stern, etc.
