Big shout out to Joyce, my babysitter, for turning me on to this show when I was in grade 2!! I'm 58 now, and this is STILL my all time favorite series!!
A feminist who learned judo for The Avengers, Honor Blackman's Cathy Gale was the first woman who was smarter and tougher than men. Diana Rigg, a younger stage actress, made a charming transition to television as her successor. Rigg's Emma Peel was a sort of Cathy Gale Lite, with William Westley Jr. and Cyd Child handling her fight scenes.
Wonderful 60 year career, got to see her in Medea last matinee b4 winning her Tony, THRILLING! Watch her with Dame Maggie in Evil Under the Sun, they snipe, duet, were friends offscreen, their children have also worked together in a Christie.
Loved The Avengers and still do! 💗 Steed was the perfectly charming English gent while Cathy Gale and Emma Peel were absolute knockouts who broke down barriers. It could be a serious show as well as campy but still worked magnificently. It reminds us of what class and style were like. Of all of Steeds partners, Diana as Emma was the best. She matched him in every way. She had it all, beauty, brains, wit, personality and skill. I hope this fantastic show and it's characters are never forgotten and that it's fanbase continues to grow not dwindle. 👍⭐🙏💖
I had a crush on Emma Peel/Diana Rigg because she was very intelligent (more so than most men). tough, resourceful, beautiful, elegant and a badass back in the 1960s when women were portrayed as ditzy sex objects on American television. I did not know she played Lay Tyrell in Game of Thrones; I had not seen her since she hosted Masterpiece Theater 20+ years ago. A great actress for all time.
As a kid at play, I used to pretend I was Mrs. Peel... She was so much more exciting than John Steed !!! God bless Diana Rigg for sharing her life with us.
She was way ahead of her time!! She was a role model for all women! Long before Charlie's Angels, Police Woman! Her and Honor Blackman were the very best!! I love them both! God bless them!! Rest in peace!!

what does the AVENGERS being a cheaper show to air in America have to do with the cancellation of HONEY WEST? HONEY WEST was an American TV show; The AVENGERS was British.@@phillipmarlowe0525
Honestly, it must have been about three days after Diana's passing when the first article to mention the Avengers appeared-every single one before hand was about that one Bond film, never mind her being THE BEST British female TV character of the whole of the 1960's, and beyond in my opinion!
Diana Rigg as Emma Peel ; was the best female character ever ! Her sleek pants outfits, her hair style , her personna, her facial beauty, her fighting abilities ; made her a total package of feminine beauty !

These were wonderful pre-Bruce Lee fight scenes. Modern fight scenes seemed to have evolved from Bruce Lee particularly the high kicking style I see everywhere now. I think Emma Peels best fight was in the "The £50,000 Breakfast" towards the end of the episode when she has a longer than usual cat fight against the blonde woman bad girl.
If I ever found myself fighting Ronda Rousey after she binged this show I could see her making every fight go like this, with high-heels and karate chops and there'd be nothing I could do to stop it.
The Avengers had 2 male leads, during a production strike Ian Hendry left for movies, they replaced him with Honor Blackman & didn't change the scripts.
She inspired me to get a Blue Belt in Tae Kwan Do! I never saw a woman like her before who could fight like her! She was my idol and inspired me to be a martial artist too!

She seems to use 3 martial art styles, Judo / Karate and Ju Jitsu.

Loved this show! But so much never explained. Anyone know of a site about The Avengers? All of them, not just Diana? And whatever happened to Mr Peel? Then again, perhaps as a child the mysterious lack of backgrounds of the characters was part of the fascination.

Honor, Linda and Joanna were judo and karate practising and surely hired for that, which wasn't the case for Diana Rigg who has more merit because she does a lot of judo holds remarkables, in particular in the train with the blonde hostess who had seized her from behind, she throws her above the shoulder, without being doubled by stuntwoman, it was the same thing for others actresses like Jennifer Croxton and Anna Quayle, quite gifted also in judo holds.
