My concerns with this revival is:
    1. Lack of gospel Clarity
    2. The theology of Asbury
    3. Scripture support for New Testament Church revival
    4. The hyper emotional and focus on the singing
    5. Why Christians are flocking to Asbury and not satisfied with the "Ordinary means" of grace God has provided for us.
America seems very focused on Revivalism. We need to compare what we are seeing with Scripture.
I do believe God will still save his people through this but its the exception not the rule.

I was there yesterday. It was SOOOO beautiful and filled with the Holy Spirit. So orderly and beautifully shepherded. I grew up in a hyper-charismatic free-for-all church that caused me a lot of damage. I have become so skeptical of movements of the "holy spirit" ever since I left. This revival is FOR REAL! I would not at all be skeptical of this revival, but I am discerning when it comes to it.
We have to be careful to not try to squash a revival, but we also have to be very careful to not jump on the bandwagon and make it out to be true Revival. That can be dangerous for those easily lead astray.
One of my main concerns with the Asbury one is that they supposedly had a real one in the 70’s. When you listen to how it started, this one started the same.
The kids were also saying that the school had been talking a lot about that 70’s revival before this one happened.
Also Francis Chan will be there to help in a Collegiate Day of Prayer on Feb 23rd.
He has a promo video out that had to be done before this revival and this Day of Prayer was already planned before the “revival” started. But in his video it talks all about the Asbury Revival of the 70’s.
    It just seems too orchestrated.
It also troubles me to see this school would have Francis Chan as a speaker.
Chan has gone so far off the rails it’s sickening.
So I have been very discerning when it comes to things like this.

You got my attention when you mentioned F. Chan. He has been on my list for years of people I won't listen to. I went on a hunt for updates on the 2023 collegiate day of prayer. My head nearly exploded. It is seriously, spiritually disheartening to see who Asbury invited to the event. I fell down the rabbit hole quickly to keep reading more articles, especially about the claims that Asbury and invited speakers orchestrated the 'revival' in advance of Feb 23rd. F. Chan gave a sermon last month claiming to now believe the Catholic tradition of transubstantiation. Today, Warren's church was removed from the southern Baptist convention for having women pastors. Like that was the WORST man oriented religious cult decision Warren ever made. Yesterday's reports are saying that Chan, Warren, Bickle and scheduled controversial music groups did not show up at Asbury yesterday. Could this sudden change be GOD saying "NO, this place is mine!", OR, the frauds feeling repelled at the true presence of God's Spirit where their darkness can't dwell & sin can't be hidden? I don't know. However, I can't doubt the possibility since He's the only One in control of all things.

In my view, I believe there was a true revival. My skepticism comes with what follows a revival. If the emphasis becomes the outward appearance of what the Holy Spirit is doing, I am convinced the revival is over. "When the Spirit of truth comes, He will not speak of Himself but will testify of Me (Jesus)." When Jesus is not the main focus, but the "power" or the "emotion" or the "acts" of the Holy Spirit get the attention, there is something to be skeptical about. The Holy Spirit changes the inward person of the heart, and that is what we need to look at. If people are interested in anything other than Jesus, and a changed heart, be skeptical. If it is truly the Holy Spirit, He is testifying of Jesus, not Himself nor of man. No matter how powerful or mysterious it is, if Jesus is not the main testimony, be skeptical. The Holy Spirit doesn't draw attention to Himself! He draws attention to Jesus!

I live in Wilmore, KY and am a graduate of Asbury Seminary. Most leaders here are calling it an 'outpouring," not "revival," since this term is overused and debatable, as we see in this video. Secondly, a move of the Spirit will attract the weird. There has been some who have tried to speak in tongues loudly or "bark,," along with some other non-sense. When this has happened, an usher has told them to stop. This is not because we are cessationists. Many here, including professors and the president of the seminary, are moderately charismatic. But this outpouring has centered on worship of Jesus, repentance, the healing of broken relationships, and some coming to Jesus for the first time. We were told Todd Bentley was coming, and a sharp eye was kept on him while he was here. We do not endorse him or his ministry.

Thanks for sharing Pastor. Very great topic on balancing skepticism on both sides and I completely agree to be discerning and pray. Speaking of the 'gay' worship leader, I personally struggled with homosexuality, but I have repented of my ways and now identify as a follower of Christ. My church and pastor know after I shared my struggles and I have put myself in accountability to allow the sin to be in the light. I am currently a worship leader in my church because God has given me gifts in music since young and I don't want to put that under a lamp. I do sometimes ask God if I should not be serving as a leader because of my past and current temptations today but He reminded me that my testimony is for His glory and encouraged me to continue waging against flesh. So I give glory to Christ for redeeming me.
It's so easy and quick to judge a whole event based on individuals who may have checkered pasts without knowing if they have repented or being convicted to repent. I was reminded that Jesus was eating with the sinners and came for the sick, not the healthy, and He calls them to sin no more. If the individual leading is unrepentant, I will pray for change but would not quickly discredit the whole movement right away.
Again, I thank God for the different bodies in our church that have strong gifts of discernment.
    God bless you all!

Melvin Kong keep submitting to the Holy Spirit & your church leadership.
We all are tempted as the Word of God says James 1:12-15. The Apostle Paul says in Ephesians 4:22-23 but temptation isn't sin! Jesus Himself was tempted. Luke 4:1-14.
Temptation is just that, temptation...Satan wanting to get you to give in your thoughts & feelings & desires...
If you do give into temptation..
      'that' is sin. Romans 6:12,13
Paul says in Colossians 3:5,9,10 to "put off" the sin that so easily besets us & to mortify it! Which literally means to put that sin to death! Romans 8:13.
By either starving it out/refusing to give in to it, refusing to think/meditate on it & also prayer...confess your faults to one another, pray for another, that you may be healed! James 5:16
With any or all of these exhortations the enemy will not be able to triumph over you.
Keep digging into God & His Word.
Prayer with fasting is also a powerful tool as the Bible tells us.
And remember Jesus came to bring the unrighteous to repentance! This you have done.
Now continue to offer yourself to the Lord for Him to use.
      Romans 8:16 Hebrews 10:16-23
If you find the old sin enters your life again... Immediately go talk with your Pastor/Leadership, repent & submit to them.
      God bless you. 🕊️

As a former student of a Christian university who held the same type of chapel services I really have to believe it’s a move of the Holy Spirit to compel so many souls to gather. The chapel service wasn’t a main event hosting celebrity pastors or worldwide advertising. It was a common student lead service. And it just so happened people from all over decided to continue to show up and praise the King of Kings and Lord of Lords? This isn’t a coincidence. I believe some people may be moved by emotion but only the Lord knows the hearts of those people. I lived through what might have been called a "move of God" back in the early 70's. I personally witnessed thousands of young people, including myself, come to Christ in a real way. What marked that "movement" that is different from what I see at Asbury is the presence of discernment over emotional experience, leading to drastic changes in lifestyle. What I have been observing for the last, at least 30 years, is the elevation of theologically vapid songs to a level of significance far above what the Scriptures call for. If singing songs to God was as important to "worship" as we modern Western believers have made it, wouldn't Jesus have either counseled doing it or even modeled that behavior Himself? There is only ONE instance of Jesus singing in the Gospels (Matt. 26:30, Mark 14:26) and that was AFTER they had performed the Passover Seder and it is only by inference that we know that Jesus also sang the hymn. (And it was a hymn, not merely a song)
Recall Paul's prayer for the Philippians "My prayer for you is that your love may abound all the more with all KNOWLEDGE and DISCERNMENT" Phil. 1:9. If this was a genuine move of God's Spirit, it seems to me that there would be many more testimonies concerning awareness of just how lukewarm the Western Christian Church has become and all of the worldly influences that have come into her making her weak and ineffective in spreading the Gospel, but what we see is, largely, the same kind of emotional expressions one finds in most churches these days masquerading as "worship". It looks to this observer more like a giant pep rally than a revival where young people who have nothing to compare it to are being influenced to celebrate the emotional; rather than the Biblical.

Interestingly, you are acting like many of the older generation of the 1970s era Jesus movement. You have become them. If it does not look and sound like you think it should; if it does not fit your theological or worship criteria, you dismiss it. I live in Wilmore, KY, and I am a graduate of Asbury Seminary. The result of the outpouring here has been profound repentance, deliverance from depression and suicide ideation, the healing of broken families and relationships, and love centered on Jesus. No one person has been at the center. Celebrities from the Christian music industry and famous Christians called to see if they could come and help. Each were given the answer, "no, we want this to continue to center on Christ, not on some personality, although you are free to come and sit in the chapel with the rest of the public."
Secondly, the "hymn" Christ sang at Passover was the Hallel Psalm (Pss. 113-118), which also possess repetitive refrains. Further, Paul describes singing as Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, making melody from our hearts. In scripture we see a variety to ways we sing, and here at Asbury, we sing hymns like Wesley's "And Can It Be," and we also sing modern Christian songs. We sing the Psalms liturgically set to music and we also sing new songs. So, we have a variety here. However, the songs that the students chose to sing reflected the way the Spirit was pouring out his joy upon a campus that has long had a dark cloud over it. So, as you sit comfortably behind your keyboard judging the worship of young people who have been set free (as many did in the 1970s), we will continue to rejoice in our Lord who have visited us and given us hope.

    • @CSUnger
      @CSUnger Рік тому +2

@@robrog73 Interesting that you reference "repetitive refrains", even though I did not mention this. It seems that you apparently have already read critiques of the modern "praise and worship" emphasis that passes for worship in many evangelical churches these days. I never said that singing songs is inherently wrong; I said that elevating them to a level of significance that Scripture does not elevate them is what makes it wrong. Sing your hearts out if that is what you wish to do but do not ignore the more important counsels of our Lord. Nowhere in the Gospels did our Lord command us to sing songs to Him or to God, nor did He model that behavior Himself, but He DID command us to "go into all the world and preach the Gospel". Why is that not emphasized if it is really a move of the Holy Spirit?

    • @robrog73
      @robrog73 Рік тому +1

@@CSUnger The problem with your critique, and those of many others, is that you only see what someone posts on social media or the news. At these services, there has been reading of scripture in the context of worship and there has been messages of repentance. The length of worship or sermons is subjective and cannot be evaluated on the New Testament lengths. One does not know how long it took Christ to sing the Hallel at Passover. Most sermons recorded in Acts are not verse-by-very, one-hour-long expository preaching. They were rather brief compared to our sermons today.
Secondly, the heavenly worship around the throne described in Revelation is ongoing, without end. The four living creatures continually sing the Thrice-Holy hymn. The angels, the living creatures, the elders, along with all creation, is continually worshiping God (Rev. 4 - 5). So worship , which is descriibed in Scripture, is continual in heaven now and in the world to come. So, gaging lengths or songs or messages by subjective standard of man is---well, more of a human tradition than it is biblical.
You say "no where in the gospels is commanded us to sing songs to him." As a Jew, Did he have to reiterate the use of the Psalter? As the Lamb on the Throne now, does he not take pleasure in our worship? However you answer these questions, an argument from silence does not an argument make.

When I heard about the "Revival" I was skeptical, mainly because of a doctrinal problem I have with them. After visiting CCCM twice and meeting pastor Chuck, I prayed all of the way home for the Lord to place me in a church where His Word is taught like at Calvary. Within a week my prayer was answered and He moved me to a small CC in Nevada. You asked the right question, what will be the fruit of this revival, will it be like the fruit of the "Jesus People Movement Revival?" Thirty-two years ago the Lord called me to minister in Tahiti, the first thirteen years was my "desert experience," then in 2004 when I had internet connection, I found many of the CC pastor's I had listen to and learned from in the States, through their teachings I learned of your ministry and have been listening and learning for years, from looking at the books behind you, we have many of the same ones, ...thank you for your faithfulness to the Word!

I thank God that He lead me to read God's word for myself and i asked Him to teach me the truth. He has been faithful in answering that prayer. Pray that you have a safe flight and trip. Let's keep a realistic balance on the subject of revival. It is an extremely emotional event that takes place. For many it will be nothing more than that. In a couple of weeks the excitement will be over and everything back to normal life. For some however, it will be transformative, because they want more. They want to walk closer with God. Only time will tell in which group each individual falls into.

The Holy Spirit is by nature, ordered 1 Corinthians 14:33. He’s unpredictable a lot of the time, but according to Paul, not chaotic. The demons didn’t like being around the presence of Christ and He had a habit of driving them out. So I struggle with the mixed nature of so-called revivals. I’ve seen and experienced the emotional, spiritual, and religious damage done in such a chaotic movement - e.g., Redding, California’s Bethel.
People are always seeking a sign. We’ve been given the sign of Jonah. I don’t deny the gifts, but I also don’t look to witness them for the sake of show or bolstering my faith.

At this point, I don’t get the skepticism. In the first few days, it was appropriate. But after 2 weeks? What else are we waiting to see? We know these kids are worshiping Jesus, confessing sins, praying, surrendering their lives to Jesus, and sharing the gospel. They’re reading scripture. And no weird things are happening.
Is Satan motivating these kids to do all of these godly things? Is their flesh motivating them to do all these godly things? Are they doing it in their natural man? No! The Holy Spirit is the only one who would motivate this behavior.
We have to be careful to not take our healthy skepticism too far. Skepticism itself can turn into a sin. If the Holy Spirit is truly doing something, to resist that work is to resist the Lord. That’s as bad as approving of something that the Lord is against.

Part of the problem I have seen with the reaction of Christians about this "revival" is that so many have taken a hardline pro stance of the revival and have engaged in name calling of fellow brothers and sisters in Christ who are somewhat skeptical of the revival calling them Pharisees. My own worship pastor posted a statement on fb stating that we should be literally "gullible" about this revival; that we should buy into it 100% with the condition that God can correct me if I'm wrong for being gullible. In other words, better to be totally gullible than to use discernment as the bible clearly states we are to do. It's sad that this name calling and side-taking is occurring in the chruch. Very sad indeed.

Jesus cautioned us in Matthew 24 not to go hear and there looking for the anointing…His Holy Spirit is either in you, or He’s not. We saw Toronto blessing/Brownsville and Pensacola and many had made shipwreck of their faith and people went, picked up that spirit and brought it back to their churches, which broke up many congregations. We all should be more cautious than not…there’s a lot at stake…the antichrist is a counterfeiter….so let’s all just pray for discernment and obey the Scriptures.

If people are in the Spirit of God then they will see right through this. Do not shake our Faith. Foolishness is when people are saying wrong things. The word is clear about women who preach. That's not a debate. That's God's word, either you believe that or not. Put your offenses of women preacher aside, It's God's word. Do not shake our Faith!! Psalm95: 7-9 For we are the lovers he cares for and he is the God we worship.
So drop everything else and listen to his voice!

don’t even think about turning a deaf ear to me
like they did when they tested me at Meribah and Massah,

These points put across by Pastor David are correct and balanced. Revival is messy and often the Ministers who preached the Word simply had to stand back and watch God move upon the people. In some ways you could say that God said to the speakers, "You've been faithful in your part now step aside and let me do Mine". The main thing in and through it all was having a spiritual discernment. It's interesting that within John Wesleys journals he noted that he and his ministers witnessed certain manifestations happening after they preached around the UK and Ireland, but they wrote that they discerned 'not all were off God'!
Another important thing to take into account are the words of Jesus to His apostles in Acts 1 (the last words He spoke to them). Just before He ascended into heaven, He instructed them to go to Jerusalem and await the power that would be given to them. But for what reason? That they would then become witnesses for Jesus and the kingdom of God - not that they would 'feel good' or just be 'happier people', but that they would become 'bond-slaves' for Christ. Let's be honest here - this is often the hardest road to be on, for there is a cost.
Time will tell what really happened at Asbury - will they become 'bond-slaves' for Christ and go and be witness's. I believe God was definitely there, but you can be pretty sure so were the deceiving spirits. Let's give thanks for Asbury but also pray for those young people that they allow the seed of God's Spirit to grow and flourish in their hearts that they will be a voice for Christ in their generation.

Wonderful to see people praising the Lord but i’m sure I read that Asbury preaches a work based salvation plus they’ve had several “revivals” in the past. When something becomes “viral” it does make on skeptical. “Be as wise as serpents & innocent as doves”
God bless you David for your ministry.

  • @touchofgrace3217
    @touchofgrace3217 Рік тому +1

We don’t need to rely on reports from either side because Scripture has given us what we need for discernment.
Asbury is calling this an Outpouring of the Holy Spirit. There has only been one Outpouring of the Holy Spirit and that was on the day of Pentecost to establish His church and it wasn’t arbitrary or spontaneous. No other outpouring is necessary because He is sufficient for all time and His “movement” never ends.
Individuals are baptized in the Spirit when they come to Christ but any claim of a spontaneous “outpouring” over here or over there is the lie of false prophets that Jesus warned us about.
God doesn’t bring chaos, he brings order to chaos. There is so much chaos surrounding this “revival” that the school put perimeters on it before shutting it down.
Asbury has a history of producing so called revivals and bragging about it on their website. That is evidence of man’s pride not a movement of God.

I do not in anyway want to blasphemy the Holy Spirit. My take is if it is from the Holy Spirit, then it will prosper and grow. If not it will come to nought. Thank you beyond measure of elaborating on this and telling me to look at both pros and cons . I am jealous because why did the Holy Spirit pick them and not me here crying every night to Jesus Christ. I thought he was not a respector of person's. Do I have to gas up my car and drive 5 hours to Oklahoma to FEEL this warm and fuzzy feelingsl these folks are witnessing? Repenting has been horrible for me. Aborting a baby in the 1970s. I've been a horrible woman. It's nothing short of bleeding out. Why this good feeling? I don't FEEL good about nothin! However, I love and adore my Master Yahshua Messiah(Jesus Christ).

And it seems to be a genuine God move of God. What is required now is careful stewarding of it.

Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in this I rejoice. I am rejoicing with Paul that Christ is being worshipped and preached.
