i feel like they could have done alternate dialogue depending on if you’ve completed the game or not.
Actually. When you fully finish the Isle of Armor, which requires beating main game post game, everyone regards you as the champion. This place seems to be pretty distant and in actually game time even if you do go there after being champion only a few days have gone by

@James Brincefield The wild area is like the best part of the game. Even the first wild area with as bland as it was was still fun to go around and fully complete the pokedex. It was the first step in what next level pokemon could truly be. Like you said, the concept of a wild open area is nothing new and tons of things do it better but this is the first time Pokemon has done it.

@@wizardthebizard2092 They've done some fishy stuff with DLC in the past. In COD season passes and other dlc shit have ruined the series with their supply drops/loot boxes. One that I remember the most was with Modern Warfare 2 Remastered, you could only get the game if you bought the collector's edition for Infinite Warfare, essentially meaning you had to spend $80 on a game you didn't want to play a game you did want.

Also If you keep up with Blizzard, a company beloved by many, you will know they are partnered with Activision and they let Activision deal with finances. From the outside looking in it seems the two conflicting approaches to making games, one favoring profits the other one favoring quality has made staff unhappy and if it keeps up blizzard as a company will be no more. That is enough to make a lot of angry fans.
I only play Sims, but what convenience things are locked behind DLC with EA? Since I started playing Sims 4, they added improved staircases and ladders for free alongside paid DLC. I know their DLCs are ridiculously priced when not on sale, and some even when on sale, but I haven't noticed too many convenience updates locked behind DLC... I've seen some "upgrades", but that's it. Like you can hire a gardener to take care of your plants... or the Seasons DLC adds a scarecrow you can buy to take care of them for you. But you still have the gardener option without paying.
I love how the water has slopes but they didn't want to include running water so it looks like Jell-O

Yes, that is me, I haven't played a new Pokemon game since Pokemon Y, but I'm interested in what's happening with the series hoping for a new Pokemon game I actually want to play.
And Pokemon Snap 2 looks like a Pokemon game I want to play.
That's how I am with Call of Duty. Haven't played a game since 2015, but I keep hoping for... something. I'm not even sure why I bother checking in at this point.
Last game I played was regular Pokemon Sun. Been waiting for one that's not just a cash grab since.

I feel like a lot of the complaints people had about the game in general could've been avoided, if GameFreak better communicated things. Like, maybe when they announced that some Pokemon wouldn't be in the base game, they also say, "But don't worry, we will be including free updates to allow all Pokemon at a later date."
The only way the rightful complaints could've been avoided would have been to provide the DLC as a free update to all the players.
What got me the most was their lie that they would be giving the Pokémon new models, come on, I wouldn’t even be mad about the Dexit, but lying to your fan base about something so easily disproven, it makes me livid

100% agree, it felt like they wasn't honnest with their annoncements at start. Instead of saying "we didn't inclued all pokemons in the game because we wanted to focus on Better Quality Animations", they should have said "we didn't inclued all pokemons in the base game but we'll include them in futur content and even add new ones" and they could avoid this big drama storm and build up hype for the dlc.

one of the more disappointing things about pokemon right now is some ideas, concepts, and parts of the game have so much passion, forethought, and effort put into them and make you really excited to play, but then there's all these other really odd decisions that bog the game down. it's like you have some really passionate people at gamefreak, but some really misguided, out of touch execs at the top.
Exactly!! I love most of the ideas in this dlc, but some things are just...terrible
that goes for a lot of Nintendo IPs in general...of course, in many cases what's good & what's odd/bad can be very subjective. Like I personally find the higher overall difficulty, constant rain and obnoxious durability mechanics to be odd/bad ideas that bog down BotW but tons of others love those aspects. with Pokemon specifically I do question things like totally removing the National Pokedex itself ( the gen 7 games even have older Pokemon catchable in-game that don't have Pokedex entries in them whatsoever... ), not allowing players to get multiples of certain items ( somehow lost my soothe bell in Sword...and there's only 1 in the whole game. fml... ), making damn near every AI ally in Max Raids as useless &/or retarded as possible while the Dynamax/Gigantamax Pokemon you're battling can often just attack multiple times in succession & wipe your whole team effortlessly....it's frustrating for sure
that's really what i've always been thinking about the whole SWSH thing, it's an underwhelming game just by the consideration that it's made a multi million dollar company. i wanna hate the game but i just feel like there's potential in every aspect and i really want to hate it cause if not i'mma be considered an apologist or whatever and just cause the game itself is indefensible in it as a game from a multi million dollar company.

If you meet someone pissed off that you have even a little bit of good feeling about the game then theyre just riding that hate-wagon. The game and dev has issues worth critisizing especially if its ur fav game. But any extreme supporters or harassers really just dont have anything better to do. Theyre probably not even fans.
These games could look so much better. Those crappy trees being copy pasted everywhere screams lazy. Just look at breath of the wild. I know they can make these games look alot better. Also they NEED a difficulty setting. They need to understand that most of the og pokemon fans are adults now and they need to stop acting like only kids like pokemon. Stop handholding us and let us play something more challenging. Gym leaders shouldn't be pushovers with only 2 or 3 pokemon its ridiculous.

Yeah but HGSS did it all over the map, SWSH restricts it to one island. Plus, HGSS had flying pokemons actually flap their wings, which 3d pokemon games refuse to do.

You could argue that every DLC are stuff that should have been there in the first place but I suppose for SWSH, it feels even more like that.

Well if we consider the Isles placement in the world and the refusal of people there to acknowledge you as champion.
The official statement of the pokemon company prior to release of sword being, “we have no plans to add the national dex, pokemon or areas to pokemon sword via post game dlc. "
And the game freak employees who stated that the dlc was in development a year before the release of the base game.
We can conclude the anti consumer practices at play and the intentional removal of content to push for the release window planned and the repackaging of elements of the core game as dlc.

It’s kinda weird that people defend game freak for not polishing Pokémon. They make so much money and they removed a few Pokémon then on Twitter I get made fun of for wanting a quality game because it’s for kids.

There are just as many people who call the games absolute trash with nothing worthwhile as there are people who say the games are perfectly fine. As long as these extreme ideals exist any opinions that aren't as extreme will be labeled as flat out incorrect.

I wish instead of pushing Hop again they gave more time with your new Rivals, I felt Hop's character arc closed around the Royal Siblings arc at the end, he refound his confidence and Drive to move forward as a researcher.
So that felt like Hop's end and it was a perfect end for his character to do seperate things away from your character.
And I was excited and curious to learn about the new rivals and maybe have them help you with the kubfu thing. But because Hop comes back it feels like these characters are just shelved at the peek of their development.
*sigh* It would of even been better if it was Bede or Marine two characters you saw way less in the base story of the game who can use the development and can bounce off the newer rivals in various ways.

Hop coming back and showing his progress as a researcher was nice since he appears after all of the Armor shenanigans for just the gmaxing. Our DLC rival gets their final loss and is in a 6 month isolation to work hard and do better, and I feel like thats a great pause for them to come back in the next DLC for a bigger role. I do also hope Marnie and Bede get some more time, but it seems likely that they will with how Hop was reintroduced and his mention of what Sonia is up to.
It also would be a bit silly to not have either Hop or Leon come back to Leon's old stomping grounds and talk about it, at least a little. If Leon showed it, it would be really forced and Hop is just clearly the better choice since he still is in Leon's shadow, even if he's currently working on another path.

What progress we all played the game.
All he did was use 4th grade logic to tell us "Honey comes from bees."
There's no moment where he shows the progress cause he JUST started studying.
He'd show progress if we didn't see him all the time.
Not to mention Leon and Hop never bring up mustard nor does the galar region at all. So nothing is lost if he was removed from the story in favor of the new rival stepping in.
Stan hop, but let's not pretend it was valuable or he made any progress when the game connects you both at the hip.
Not buying it myself. The main product wasn't worth the asking price and I will not be paying even more to supplement that. I hope the kind of effort they put here will get put into the next game, at launch, instead of them selling it later like they did here.
Couldn't agree more. The new moves will be fun to mess around with on Showdown, though.
I'm waiting for the almost garaunteed ultra sword and shield like how they shit on everyone who bought two copies of sun and moon right before they dropped the value of it $4 buy back because of ultra sun and moon which was the same exact game but made better. Like they couldn't have waited 4 months to release yalls actually vision. "Ultra sun and moon is the vision of the game we originally had and wanted to do...." then why did you? Oh yea doubling up on sales after already doubling up via two versions of the same game at release....

New formula:
1- Develop new pokemon game,
2- Release the first half of it in two different versions with minimal character differences to justify the two versions.
3- Release the second half in two waves of dlc which to get all the content of players must buy copies of dlc packages 1 and 2 for EACH version of the half baked base game.
4 - finally after sales for both the base and dlc packages have gone stagnant release an ultimate edition of each version of the game which includes the dlc and one exclusive new legendary pokemon and one exclusive outfit for your avatar.
Boom lots and lots of money made that won't be invested into bettering the next addition to the series....

One of the best things about this dlc is that it finally doesn’t force you down a set path that you have to follow strictly. After you beat the rival the first time you can explore the entire island at your own leisure instead of the usual certain areas being blocked off until you progress further into the story.

I started the dlc by exploring the entire archipelago, catching a few mons, and doing some raid battles. I didnt start the main story until the next day
I fell like Pokemom Sowrd and Shield wouldn't have recieved as much hate if they didnt announce DLC shortly after, or, hold off on releasing the game until they finished the dlc and just included it in the maingame.
TPCI wouldn't let them do that.
Seeing the quality of isle of armor, I think the game wouldn't have had received as much backlash if it just looked and felt like that
Glad that gamfreak finally discovered ps2-era open worlds (hopefully they also will discover ps2 trees too!).
Let's hope that bare minimum open world design is on the base game next gen, and not the DLC.
Or they hire a competent studio to develop it, that way pokemon can be designed like a current-gen game.

Hot take: I don’t blame Gamefreak for SWSH’s problems. I blame the Pokemon company. TPC is responsible for forcing the yearly releases and making the game budgets smaller than they should be, Gamefreak is just working with what they’ve got
Now that I think about it... You right.
Mhm, people need to look at the bigger issues instead of throwing all their hatred at one easily targetable source. Like people assume that because Pokemon is the biggest multimedia franchise that their games must have giant budgets as if most of that money doesn't go into the tons of other media pokemon includes. Could GameFreak as a whole be better, definitely but screaming at them wont solve anything.
Sorry for the long reply but I find this situation pretty interesting.
I'm thinking about looking into it more closely to be honest. Gamefreak are the devs, but as far as I can tell it must be The Pokémon Company that are causing the decline in quality. They control how the franchise is handled and Gamefreak just have to do what they say.
I really think it's down to the Pokémon Company being greedy. I'm sure if they wanted they could bring back that immense flair and passion into the mainline games, but they're raking in the cash either way. It's as if they're spitting on all of the Pokémon fans who have been around for awhile.
Then, shouldn't Nintendo step in? They own Pokémon in general, right? So if they wanted they could reign the Pokémon Company in and give them a kick up the backside. But they don't, and I suppose that's because they're only really concerned about the money, too.
I get that it's all a business, but they are taking advantage of the customer. They could deliver a fantastic product, while still generating insane revenue, but would rather cough up lackluster games to reduce effort and make even more money I guess.
It's hard to tell exactly, because I don't know the structure and intricacies of Nintendo/The Pokémon Company/Gamefreak, but something could be done about this for sure.
I just downloaded Pokémon Home on my mobile earlier so that I'd be ready to receive that Shiny and it makes this even more apparent. Man, that thing is a joke. I tried to see if I could get a simple Litten by trading my Poplio. Selected to filter out mythical/legendary requests and get bombarded by folks asking for freaking Urshifu!
I could go on and on talking about this stuff, but I'd better stop.

It would be awkward to implement it for everyone if they did it any other way.
If only DLC buyers got to walk with Pokemon they would get bitched at by the fanbase for locking it behind a paywall.
If they gave it as a free update, it would force them to edit how the base game works just to add it and people would bitch with either "why didn't we get this in the base game at launch" or "this is so bad why did they even bother" like we're seeing now. Players who purchased the DLC would feel cheated since the pokemon are already free, and then you'd essentially be paying 30 dollars to be able to evolve Kubfu. So either they would have to make yet another thing DLC buyers get (which puts it back at square one) or people bitch about why is an evolution 30 dollars.
Leaving it as an Isle of Armor area only thing was the right choice since it makes the area feel more unique and worth the additional cost than just feeling like more of the same but doesnt take away from the base game players experience in any way.

@@BladeBloodTear Homie, no.. people would bitch no matter what, but I can guarantee you that if they released free patches for the game that made for a better experience (walking pokemons, fixing the jank in swsh, yadda yadda) there would be a lot more people praising them for it. Instead, they threw out the game barely half-baked and are making us pay for glimpses at a better experience that will never come.

If you upgrade the dojo enough, you can get a vending machine that spits out heavily discounted bulk vitamins. Super nice for EV training expediting.
Except EV training with vitamins is completely useless. Go to a Pokemon Center and you can fully EV train your Pokemon for free. If you use the raid den time skips, this could take maybe 20 minutes.

And considering how easy to get money in this game Vitamins is a lot better choice. I make 10 Complitetive team already and i still sit on 7M.

DLC should be a plus to the experience, not what was missing of the release, that's what patches are for and they are mostly for glitches and fixes.
edit: 11:24 and what was that? they couldn't tell it to stop the walking animation when the track ended? they taught me that on 7th quarter of university.
But it's literally a completely separate experience. This doesn't add anything missing.

I think the DLC is competent, but where it shines makes Sword and Shield even more frustrating. Overall, for now, I dont think the game is worth its price.

I think Pokemon could easily be 60 bucks depending on what's done with it. I loved this game, but the lack of Post game content is an issue that I feel like Pokemon has had in it's more recent generations.
If this DLC was released as Post game content, then I think it could definitely be worth 60 bucks, especially depending on how The Crown Tundra turns out. I also wish that they brought back The Battle Frontier, rather than just The Battle Tower and nothing else.
I didn't mind paying 60 bucks because I definitely enjoyed the game, but given that the price is so much higher than it used to be, I really hope that they start expanding upon the formula more. They don't even have to reinvent it if they don't want too, just do more with it.

The thing with this dlc it feels like it should of been in the main game.
Well, it was a pretty large thing, so I don’t agree with that
I feel like it was in the base game but Gamefreak decided to remove it and use it as paid DLC to make more money. There is really no reason logically why it wasn't part of the main gain, I mean, there is no extra story to explain in game why its a separate space from the rest of the region. Even Kubfu has no real backstory. Nothing connecting it to anything else. The tower to evolve it was laughably bad. Just 5 floors battling basic pokemon? Really?! No ncp trainers to battler against or anything.
I will say this, I created a new account on my switch and played the game with the DLC from the start of the game and it felt like it should have been part of the main game. I just got the second badge and went to the isle of armor and it feels better going there during the main game rather than after beating everything first. Now that I have Kubfu, I can go through the main game, get the badges and then evolve it. It just feels like it was a part of the base game that should have been there from the start. Playing it after beating the game like most ppl are doing just feels like even more half assed parts of an already half assed game.
I fully agree. This should've been a part of post game. "What's that? You beat the game? Awesome. Here's a small adventure that gives you a legendary, a place to wander around with your pokemon behind you, and a way to get gigantamax versions of your pokemon."
As is, it feels like paying extra for something was sorely missing to begin with.

Except Kirby Star Allies' DLC updates were actually good and addressed the majority of issues with the base game. The Isle of Armor only adds old Pokemon and a wild area that should've been in the base game to begin with
Meanwhile I am one of those who enjoyed playing Kirby Star Allies even before the updates. Even though I admit it had weak level design.

Depending on its content, Crown Tundra probably should've been the only DLC from the start, but we'll get to that when we get to that.
They kind couldn’t delay the main game actually (spinoff, anime, toys, cards etc already scheduled for release and depend on the main games releasing before they do and delaying everything is a bigger nightmare)

Let's hope that bare minimum open world design is on the base game next gen, and not the DLC.

I enjoyed the base game itself, but once you become Champion you quickly run out of new stuff to do. It hurts the replayability.

I still can't get myself to buy Pokemon S&S, I think I'd feel dirty playing it after all the lies about the reasons why they cut National Dex and then selling parts of the national dex back to you.
At first I was thinking: "Oh well at least the old pokemon are a free update and you can pokebank them in." However! Friends of mine that do play reported that transferring in old pokemon does not mark them off in your pokedex... so they're still strong-arming you into buying the DLC if you're one of the people trying to complete the dex.
It's just more... dirty feels...
Oh and they're not refunding people who bought the wrong version of the DLC for their game.... why are there two versions in the first place?!
But they do register. You just have to put them in the daycare and take them out. So, you are spending about 25k pokebucks on the daycare to register them if you really wanted to.
The not being resistered thing is literally labeled as a bug in Pokemon Home, it's not intended and there are easy ways around it the game just can't add a dex nav entry when a pokemon is just magically written into your save data in the current state.
Me personally, I could care less about the Pokedex situation. Theres over 400 pokemon in the game, atm. Too overwhelming for me at times lol.

Also, the thing about having 2 versions of the DLC and not refunding it is some of the worst business practice I have heard in my life. If they did it maliciously then they are just as bad (if not worse) than companies like EA. If they did it without thinking about how bad of an idea it was, then it just further proves how they are unqualified to continue making AAA games unless they see radical changes.

@@bulbasaur15 Either version, though the DLC is included by default in SotFS. The conondrum is that the default game was really divisive, but the DLC was commonly considered great, so players who wanted to experience the great DLC had to play the rest of the game too.
For the record, I didn't think DS2 was much worse than 1. A lot of others disagree.

I wouldn’t say it’s fantastic but I did enjoy it. Urshifu is a neat Pokemon and you can gmax any Pokémon that’s able to now which I think is neat. Pretty good overall

that's basically pokemon company ever since the last 2 generations, especially with this current gen. We are the problem here as consumers. WE are the ones who keep buying the product, WE are the ones who keep putting the millions of dollars into Gamefreak's bank accounts. WE as a community need to change and stop supporting them and not buy these half assed pokemon games. The base game and DLC have been largely disappointing for me.

The average casual fan/kid/mom buying said kid a birthday present will likely buy anything with Pokemon on the box, and they'll never think twice about whether or not they're getting their money's worth, as long as the kid enjoys it.

I think we're all in agreement that the Crown Tundra looks AMAZING compared to Isle of Armor. Isle of Armor feels like baby's first DLC and Crown Tundra is like "ohhhh we in with the big boys now." what with all the den exploration, the legendaries, the deep lore....oh yeah. Kubfu is cute and I LOVE Urshifu. He's so broken lol. I think when it all comes together the DLC as a WHOLE will be worth the 30 bucks but I can see why they released it separately. I think this is the route to take for Pokemon in the future rather than just "oh here's the same game but just a little different". Which is what the third game is: Crystal, Yellow, Emerald, Platinum, Ultra Sun and Moon, etc....They're all the same story just a little different. Here at least it's VERY different and I appreciate it.
Of course now the full gaming experience costs 180 if you want both games with dlc. Great i love the road pokemon is headed down.....

I recommend watching Lockstin Gnoggin he has very good videos on the lore of Pokemon. And it's one thing that GameFreak does VERY well-the lore of the world is amazing. @@deltalord6969 well let's look at it like this: Pokemon Diamond was released in 2007-and if I remember right cost around 35 bucks. Platinum was around 40 bucks. That's 75 bucks. Pokemon SwSh are 60 bucks. DLC is 32 bucks after tax. 92 bucks. So 92-75 that's only a 17 dollar difference. You don't need to buy it for BOTH games if you have both just pick one-though I'm sure some people WILL get it for both. And it's not like you have to REBUY Crown Tundra it's already gonna be ready to download on launch day.

When you spend an UNGODLY amount of watts, you can battle Honey after the most on-the-nose cutscene ever - she calls the Pokemon league and asks if you can battle other regional champions, and then they freaking say NO.
So you battle Honey.
Spend more, and you get to go on a walk with her. Cool stuff.
Edit: for competitive players, it's kinda nice though. You can get some discounted supplements. I was pretty excited about it

It's too bad they don't give us a Daycare at the island. The Isle of Armor is so optimized for competitive players that it should have been a no-brainer. It would be loads of fun to bike around the island trying to hatch eggs.

@@ISAAC607 The Digging Pa gives you an outrageous amount of watts for 7 Armorite Ore. I'd say that's the quickest way. Hop on Raids and collect Armorite Ore, then go to him and start digging.
I did really enjoy the DLC, although it really should've been in the main game. I liked the new rival (Klara for me) and I thought the whole Kubfu thing was cute. Going in, my main team was lv. 100 but I did have another team I needed to level so luckily it wasn't as brain-numbingly easy as I thought it'd be.

I know you didnt evolve Kubfu, but after you do, there is a small thing with Hop and Using Max Mushrooms on Urshifu, with a little twist or whatever. I liked the DLC, although it was kinda short.

Too short. And the watt upgrades after the vitamins are a pointless timesink. It's a nice dlc but it was short and pathetically easy. Like.... REALLY easy. No scaling. No difficulty. However, the characters are wonderfully characterized. And the returning Pokemon is a plus. But overall, I didn't like it. To me, the dlc was just a big "pay to get mons back sidequest". I did like the story despite it being short tho.

The biggest general issue seems to be:
This feels like it should've been in the base game, not DLC while it might not add enough to justify being DLC due to it being short and ultimately anything new gets 5 seconds in the spotlight then we all walk away. Almost like when you obtain Mewtwo in the original games. Great you have them... but now what? DLC doesn't fit the style of Pokemon.
Ironically the re-release fixes these issues offering a slightly changed plot with new things/fixes. You play through the game so the new things have sticking power due to literally playing through the game and having use for them. You start at level 5, work your way through things, and reach an end state.
I figured it would do this, Pokemon isn't a series that works with DLC. This isn't a PvP game where match to match provides unlocks, progression, and such where DLC has general use in new maps or tools. It doesn't have a deep enough story to expand on issues or plots with DLC in this generation. (Think Black 2 and White 2... or even how in Ultra Sun/Moon the legendary from the past version was expanded on.)
This was designed to capitalize on the issues the game had and encourage people to buy it. Even limiting things following them in the mainland... it can look really bad in what is suppose to be a super family friendly game.
This was, at its best, what the base game should've had and with the draw of a single Pokemon being added for it... it makes this even worse.
I feel like if you play competitively you get a ton more out of this package. I play ranked and feel like this DLC is well worth every penny.

If I can be frank, this DLC left me feeling really disappointed in the end. I heard from other sources that the levels for the training era would scale with me, so I went in thinking there was gonna be some interesting battles in there for me to experience. I also went in thinking that there was gonna be more story in it than there was.
But after playing through it, I was just left with a feeling thinking...
"Really? Was that really it?"
While I like having the new wild area and all, for someone like me who already has access to plenty of the Pokemon there from Home, there really wasn't much for me to do in it. It just kind of exists. It's not a bad thing, but it's there. All I really get out of it is having access to the new items, services, and moves it offers.
My bigger gripe really comes from the returning Pokemon we've got. Gamefreak just won't stop with their bias with Gen 1 and it shows here. Gen 1 had far and away the most amount of returning Pokemon in this part of the DLC, with one of my favorite gens, Gen 3, only getting a small 6 returning Pokemon here. I really can't stand how much they like to push Gen 1...
Honestly, I'm kind of wishing I didn't buy the DLC; the few things it does offer to me is little more than convenience for me in the end. The content is does have felt just kind of empty to me, and I'm left just feeling entirely unsatisfied and disappointed with it.

Also, they need to add more incentives to explore and keep playing. After you’ve built your team, there is little incentive to “catch them all”. All you can do is catch Pokémon and find items.
They also need to crank up the difficulty, add intense battle towers (or more gyms) and have areas that limit how many healing items you can bring in. Maybe introduce more RPG elements like a stamina meter where you can’t spam the same attacks, etc.

Just wanted to add, it seems to have two "scales" either you beat the game and it scales to 60 or it is level 15. If you go right after Milo it's level 15 and if you go after the 6th gym and getting the water bike it is STILL level 15.

Apparently Star allies learned from their mistake we are due for a New Kirby game and theres still no sign of one they aren’t rushing it.
At least Kirby DLC was free. The complete experience is worth 60€. The complete Sword/Shield experience most likely won't be worth 90€.
I do think Sw/Sh were more disappointing, but both tried to deliver more content with DLC that could have, and should have been in the base game

I think the only most infuriating point of this DLC is that this Is litterally 15 bucks to GET BACK 150 pokemons and only 2 WHOPPING new pokemons for the entire DLC, piled up with the fact that DLCs were all along in mind (meaning that the cut was part lie) it really makes the DLC just have a cash-grabby, greedy look.
You do realise that literally every generations since the 4th had you transfer Pokemon in from previous games that aren't available in the main game? You don't have to buy the DLC to transfer those Pokemon, it just works the same as it always did, but now without buying a 60 dollar third version. You can criticise SwSh en the DLC about a lot, but 'locking previous Pokemon behind 25 dollar DLC' is not one of those points.
You do realize that the “150 pokemon you get back” are still free to get, if you have friends. It seems like you don’t since you are acting irrationally

The Isle of Armor seems to be made specifically for competitive VGC in mind. From the interesting moves from the Move Tutor, the few Pokemon introduced, and the pokemon returning (Politoed, Volcorona, Amoonguss), it's all seems to be all geared for VGC in mind. I think your mileage may vary when it comes up this.

There's this one awesome moment in the forest area where an Emolga glides between trees and rests on each one. Even if there's nothing else like that it gave me so much hope for what the future might bring.

It looks as empty as I imagined. Im surprised most people dont have enough foresight to see how predictable these games have gotten.
As a former fan now just an observer, I see a better realization of what the wild area needed to be but is otherwise just big and empty and doesn't really have much in the way of goals or activities that people other than completionists would enjoy (dex cut withstanding...). This DLC feels like a singular sidquest that has one oversized area to go with it.
The rest of the issues you already mentioned so I wont be redundant, but I will reinforce how lame it is to have to pay to unlock something as basic as pokemon following you just to also restrict it and not even give any meaningful interactions as they used to. From all the footage I see all they do is follow you but you can't talk with them. To many it would seem like they gave people what they want but really they gave only a fraction of it.
the wild area will improve, just slowly. So that Nintendo can milk it's evolution of the formula for as long as they can

Even if they'd had an extra year to develop that wouldn't fix all the problems. There are several endemic design flaws (awful bottom-of-the-pile Pokémon designs, the wild area, the music, etc.). These are deliberate decisions that they thought were acceptable. Compared to that the bad graphics and poor balancing are relatively minor.

Plus people's main complaint with the wild area are the graphics, which are worse then the main game so yes, more time would have improved it, not quite sure how it wouldn't.
@@Whispernyan It's "subjective" in the sense that some people have bad taste. I hadn't even heard the music until last week, it's embarrassingly bad in comparison to even the first generation. Most of the designs aren't just lacklustre (ie. Lumineon), they're physically disgusting to look at. Grimmsnarl actively ruins the franchise by its existence. Coalossal, Eternatus, Flapple, the fossils, Chewtle, Blipbug, Inteleon, Sirfetch'd... none of these should continue to exist after these games. Pull a reverse SwSh and delete them from the code.
My complaint with the wild area is that it's just a copy of Poni Plains. A big empty field with a bad render distance. It's not "open world", it's lazy. Real routes would have been preferable.

Grimmsnarl look menacing and look like how a Troll or Goblin should look. Chewtle is cool or cute in the normal sense, but in his own kind of dorky way, he's cute. Flapple is a creative design I like. And Sirfetchd is about what I figured an evolution of Farfetchd would look like. Inteleon is cool, I like the spy motif with him. And Eterantus, well..... Its probably one of my favorite Pokemon in the game in it's normal form. I don't care for the Gigantamax form, it looks really weird. But I'vethough the Dynamx and Gigantamax thing was really gimmicky. Blipbug might not look great, but the actually origins behind the line are actually pretty cool. My issues are with more toward the story, some of the choices for things like just not having Pokemon from other games usable at all. I'm fine with not natdex, just let me use my Pokemon. The whole chosen trainer thing kind of bugs me, I like being the nobody in the storyline. It made becoming champion more worth while. It made catching Legendaries cooler, I earned that Legendary. It wasn't just given to me, or I caught it because I'm the "Chosen One". I beat, and I caught it with my own hard work. I'm also not a fan of Mega Evolutions just disappearing. I think it could have been reworked to be usable, I liked the idea of the bond between trainer and Pokemon unleashing a new powerful form. I will say, I don't like the Fossil Pokemon designs, they have a cool origin behind them, but they're really weird looking. The wild area could have been designed better, that much is true.

(jk) That fucking duck is the reason there are earthquakes in Japan. God is punishing us for having the hubris to think we could match his creation. I have never felt so strongly about bad Pokémon designs, even the garbage that they put in Gen 1 is better. Ball with eyes is a superior character design to 60% of the designs in SwSh. The idea that they cut out Pokémon like Blastoise, Krookodile and Mismagius because there "wasn't enough time/room" but they decided to include Barraskewda makes me physically sick.
Now, unless your enjoyment of the designs can match my absolute disgust/horror, I think it'd be better to send them all back to the drawing board.

I felt like this DLC is a step in the right direction for Pokémon. The world is more vibrant, the story is simple and works, and the characters are really great.

I agree. If they make the dlc quality content of sword and shield into the next gen games for free and improve the graphics, then much more people would not love it, but still, it would be pretty cool.

I'm happy for dlc instead a new game, but the lack of challenge, puzzles, and basic animations screams that Gamefreak was doing the bare minimum to get by. I sort of agree with you the fan base it is divided, but that's 1 humanity in general and 2 what naturally comes with a fan base so large. The more people you have involved in something the more of a chance it has to go wrong and have differing opinions. I think that Gamefreak doesn't really know how to make a game that the fans want, but since they still sell well there safe for now. The interesting thing will be what happens in the next generation. I LOOOOVE Pokemon , but this SWSH experience has done enough damage to make me more patient when Pokemon comes out next. If the next game comes out I'm gonna withhold and wait to see if it's more of the same. I think a good portion of the older fans are gonna feel the same way. Hopefully Tem Tem and Kindred Fates can fulfill those desires like bug fables did for paper Mario. Unfortunately Tem Tem seems to be hitting a snag at moment.

I'm finding the following incredibly underwhelming here. From the angles I'm usually in during gameplay, I can't even typically see the Pokemon following me. When I turn the camera to look, they usually aren't anywhere near me.

its the same animations used in pokemon camp, so its not /really/ built for following pokemon directly, but its either that or make 500 new running animations for all the pokemon and that's excessively too much work for any studio.
12:27 there's still quite a bit more story after the tower like you get to battle mustard and some other stuff even if you don't care about kubfoo id still recommend doing it

There are still issues to be sure, but the DLC is already a solid step up from the base game. If anything, it makes the base game feel even more rushed.
Honestly, the DLC was great, if the story is very short. I feel like Shield players *really* got shafted with Avery, since Klara is so much better written, and...feels better than all the dumb psychic move inserts.
Also, the scaling thing...isn't great. Its either "Beaten the game" or "not" and there's no inbetween for scaling whatsoever.

I definitely didn't care for Avery at all. Klara definitely seemed more sinister. Her shenanigans in the battle arena also are more impactful than Avery (not that either makes the fights hard at all).

Story isn't really over until you do the Kubfu stuff, there's a couple more little arcs after that and the game actually gives you a proper "The End" screen at the end.
After the Kubfu story, you can get more challenge towers were you can only use a specific type
And fully upgrading dojo leads up to secret battle with Honey.
If you spend enough watts, you get a secret boss fight, actually.

@@sammydray5919 If people are expecting a challenge going into a pokemon game from the story, they are playing the wrong game. This is why competitive battling exists.
Isle of Armor feels like supplemental content meant to add on to your current playthrough. The story itself is obviously short but it clearly segments itself in a way that says “Hey, if you want to put a pause here and return to your journey in the main game then you can do it now.”. The level scaling is also dynamic enough to allow you to go back into it at any point in the main story and will be scaled to your current point in the game. But of course, you can even blow through half the stuff and get Kubfu before even setting foot in Motostoke. So while Isle of Armor is short, it is flexible enough where you can progress at your leisure if you are playing from the start of the game. And I think that is what GF was trying to aim for.
I'm glad you liked the expansion, makes me wonder if they can incorporate that into the overall mainland, biomes and other visuals, I wonder if they could patch that in to the game.

Honestly, I love a lot of the conveniences that come with this DLC and they make it SO worth the $15 price tag imo. You find a lot more items like Mushrooms and Nuggets and Star Pieces that can be sold off for profits, as well as different Nature Mints so that you can alter your Pokemon's stats. And they respawn daily, so there's incentive to keep playing. Once you give Honey enough Watts to refurbish the Dojo, she buys a second vending machine and stocks it with the stat-boosting vitamins like Protein, Iron and Carbos, and you can bulk buy them for half the price of the normal Wyndon Pokemart where you buy them on the mainland. On top of the Restricted Sparring that allows you to grind up BP a LOT faster and easier than doing the Battle Tower.
There's this small section you do about getting urshifu to gigantamax with hop as well. Not to mention the ability to give any gmaxable pokemon the gmax factor. Having pokemon follow also has extremely efficient friendship boosting value.
There's also special training where you can only use three pokemon and they all have to have a common type, and you can only rest them like three times through the training. It is available at the end of the urshifu gmax thing (or maybe partway through that? I found it at the end, but honestly hadn't checked) and a special league at the end after you've filled the dex. Dunno what the special league or its rewards are yet, but i think the trailer showed something about a double battle league.
The dojo upgrades include some discounted bulk purchases of ev training items, a fight with someone you otherwise never get to fight at 1 million watts, and then something else that i dont know of and dont want spoiled at like 3,280,000 watts.
I may have enjoyed the game but I feel this first half of the DLC, personally, doesn't convince me to get it yet. Hopefully the second half can fix that.
Not worth. If you did not buy sword and shield yet, don't, theres like nothing to do but catch pokemon.
@@dugtrioramen It's almost like it's a Pokemon game and that's literally all it's ever been (story wise) lol. Competitive battling is where it truly shines.
There's still a bit more content unlocked after evolving Cubfu, including what I'd say is the most difficult battle in the entire game. There's also a ton of new minor features that seem to really push for people to get into Competitive Pokemon.
Is it more difficult than the final gym battle? Right now I find that to be the hardest and I was really caught off guard by it.
"Most difficult battle in the entire game"... Well maybe if you're evenly leveled with it. Admittedly the guy did KO my level 100 Rowlet but... it was a level 100 *Rowlet.* Its level advantage was somewhat negated by the fact that it was a first-form starter with a ton of weaknesses.
@@thelordstarfish yeah obviously going in with a full team of level 100 pokemon is gonna make any battle easy, but I went in with a team ranging from high 70's to low 90's and still got pretty rekt.
hey arlo, there's actually a larger section to the dlc after you complete the towers- maybe another 2+ hours? when you actually get kubfu i would say you've only really reached the half-way mark. i would actually finish it until making a final decision about how you like it.
I can say, after playing the full DLC too, I accidentally bypassed the Kubfoo scenery quest. I sorta did a Competitive Player mindset and went to EV Train mine right away against equal leveled Pokemon back in Galar. Then when I got back, I tried to visit the spots but I got the quest marker telling me I already got Kubfoo happy enough to return to the dojo. So if you want to avoid that scene side quest, just battle with Kubfoo outside the DLC with a Soothe Bell.
