  • Palm oil harvest is an important moment in exploring the results of plantation production. To ensure a successful harvest, there are several preparations that need to be taken into account, especially when the oil palm plant has reached the criteria for being a productive plant™. Here are some preparatory steps that need to be done before starting harvest:
    1. Criteria for Harvest Ripe:
    - Garden owners and harvest officers need to understand the criteria for ripe harvest to avoid mistakes in harvesting immature plants (TBM).
    - The parameters used to determine the criteria for ripeness for harvest include color changes in the bunches and fruit breaking off from the bunches.
    - The process of changing the color of the bunch starts from green to black, then red or orange.
    - The weight of bunches ready for harvest is usually more than 10 kg for 2 bunches and less than 10 kg for 1 bunch.
    - The quality of oil palm fruit ready to be harvested is determined by the ripe harvest fraction which consists of 7 classes.
    2. Harvest Method:
There are two methods of harvesting oil palm based on tree age:
    - Plants less than 4 years old are harvested using a dodos tool 8-10 cm wide and using an iron pipe handle or wooden stick.
    - Oil palm trees that have reached the age of 30 months (generally more than 60% of the trees bear mature fruit) are ready to be harvested.
    3. Harvest Frequency:
    - Palm trees are harvested every 15 days because fresh fruit bunches (FFB) ripen at different times.
    - FFB must be collected daily and delivered to the factory within 24 hours of harvest.
Remember that thorough preparation will affect the effectiveness of harvesting activities and plant productivity. Hopefully this information helps, and hopefully the palm oil harvest in the Sumber Urip farmer group, especially phase 2, goes smoothly!
