It’s very prowar. It suggests that a ragtag group of kids can hold off a military force for any length of time with a salt bae dash of training. It is laughable, but the joke is on us. The wins that they rack up at first treat it almost like a game. The tide turns, but the true horrors of war aren’t touched on. It is a very sanitized version of war. If they were serious about being anti war, the movie would be gruesome. This movie came out in the eighties. Gremlins, which came out the same year, was more graphic in their gore. And it changed the ratings system.

I agree, love the tone od this because the kids are incredibly miserable, they went from a hs class to watching their family being murdered and having their whole lives changed and not for the better no matter how many Russians they kill or friends they lose
Great movie. Many people would dismiss it as some gung ho Reagan era 80s action movie but it is very moving and portrays war in a way in which everyone ultimately loses.
My brother, dad and I qoute this all the time. "You gotta back your brother's play." "All that hates gonna burn you up, kid." "It keeps me warm." "We's as good as any of you!" "Avenge me son, Avenge me!" And of course "Wolverines!"

But it did in a universal manner with the screen text at the end, it explained what happened afterward. Obviously Jed's brother was killed and Jed likely died from his injuries. The rest is explained in the screen text.

That is when the text comes up on screen and then they pan to "Patriots Rock" which also describes what happens.
Agreed, it's absolutely over the top propaganda in many places, but the "heroes" don't get to ride off into the sunset. It's ultimately a pyrrhic victory if anything for them. It got a lot of flack because it rolls so neatly into every gun-sexual Amercian's wet dream, but in the end, no one wins.
It's a great movie that borders on being a B-movie, the scene where they kill their friend who is a traitor is really well done and very dark for a movie you would expect to just be a feel good patriotic ride.

For example, the scene at the end (spoiler) "Vaya con Dios" where the Cuban general refused to shoot dead the only 2 remaining Wolverines members, because seeing them dying suddenly reminds him of his own guerilla struggle in 1950s Cuba. Then the scene of young Soviet soldier at national park, it's apparent that these soldiers are not cartoonishly evil, they are just normal soldiers with normal life
I heard that as they went through the course in the forest with two green berets and then had Dale Dye as an advisor for filming. It was worded weird but i think that's what they meant

I can remember like it was yesterday going to see Red Dawn in the theater with my father and brother while on summer vacation in Maine. I was 10 years old and everyone in the theater loved the movie. That vacation we also saw The Last Starfighter, Tightrope and Cloak & Dagger. I spent five summers up in Maine and movie wise 1984 was probably the best!
I turned 13 the year it came out, so me & my cousin went to see it in the theater, & were totally blown away, no happy ending either. The remake is wretched in comparison, watched ot once when it came out, tried again recently & couldn't even make it halfway through it.
While a patriotic film, Red Dawn is, without a doubt, anti-war. Red Dawn does an excellent job of showing the brutality of war, and how it affects those who fight it. It shows how war has a tendency to dehumanize those who fight it, as well as the mental, physical and spiritual turmoil that the fighters experience.
They not only loved the country, they appreciated the country. We knew how bad it could be, we knew the horrors of people living behind the Iron Curtain, and we could disagree with people of the opposing party without hating them because we knew the other guy loved America too and didn't want to tear it down. Now, all that has changed.
So damn many of us Americans are waiting for the day that this happens. I really think its more plausible than ever. I've often wondered how the different regions would have their own takes on war.
The main premise for the movie is a surprise parachute drop of Russian special forces somehow conquers America. Yet the airdrop of a few dozen stuntmen in the film went awry with them scattered all over the place and one stuck in a tree and trying to convince paranoid locals that he really wasn’t a Russian paratrooper. Any real Russian paratrooper drop would have been just as disastrous (for the paratroopers)
Real drops are always a disaster, it's even part of the planning. It's called "Little Groups of Parachuters" because everyone is scattered and causing mayhem behind enemy lines.
This movie still has an impact. When Russia first invaded Ukraine in 2022 there were a group of Ukrainians (or foreigners fighting for Ukraine) spray painting WOLVERINES on destroyed Russian vehicles.
Funny how the other actors were intimidated by him, even Eastwood was intimidated by him at first because he is such a real life badass. Eastwood would say that Smith was one of the nicest, most professional people he has ever worked with.

Saw it when it first came out, I was in HS at the time and me and my friends had quite a good chuckle. We were all in ROTC at the time (USMC) and knew quite a bit about the military and various capabilities. One thing we all knew is that it is impossible to invade the continental US from any point. The other is that the US was and is the only nation with global conventional military offensive capabilities. The movie was so impossible we just watched it as a comedy and it was quite good.
Yes you do have to kind of suspend your disbelief on that one subject to enjoy the movie for what it is. It is indeed nearly impossible to directly invade the USA due to its geography...does not hurt that it is also the largest armed populous I am sure, ha. To actually be able to field heavy armored vehicles and MIGs would be quite an accomplishment.
George Lucas, Milius' film school friend, based the character John Milner in American Graffiti, on Milius. So, in less than thirty years, he went from being the cool guy, a proto-Fonz, to Walter Sobchak. Milius was notorious but, imho, never received his due as a filmmaker. Red Dawn and Big Wednesday are both terrific.

I still love and wish there were more games about the premise of Red Dawn, such as freedom fighter, and other such games... The idea of being a individual that is under occupation and trying to fight against the invaders is a very fun idea...
Thought Harry Dean Stanton's "Avenge Me" scene is so powerful and Ron O'Neal's portrayal of the Cuban officer Bella is underrated. Basil Poledouris's score is Epic as well. Powers Booth always gives a film gravitas. Lot to like in this film.
I wouldn’t call Red Dawn pro-war. Chiefly for its dramatic moments on how preferably avoidable a warring way of life should be and certainly for very young people. The entire cast was superb. Especially Patrick Swayze, Powers Boothe and Lea Thompson.
What I'm finding even harder to believe than the utterly ridiculous plot is the idea that the final battle scene was filmed in -40° temperatures. I used to live in New Mexico, and while it would certainly get cold thanks to the altitude, the only way it could get THAT cold is at the very peaks of only the tallest mountains.
I enjoyed the remake. It set as a nice contrast under a different set of circumstances and different time. Both movies achieved their goal of putting the possibility of WW III into perspective.

I like watching both films,nice action pieces too. Good movie retrospective review,didn't know all the behind the scenes drama,mishaps and hard training to portray actors as guerrilla fighters. In the decades since the Cold War ended, I've always wondered what sort of movies the Soviets made about us. That being said, _Red Dawn_ takes the silver for 80's ridiculous "Let's play war" movies, only being eclipsed by _Iron Eagle_ .
Red Dawn is such a cool movie, really resonated with me as it reminded me of the plans I use to make of running to the mountains and waging guerilla warfare on the communists if they went dictatorial (always a possibility down here in South America). The musi is great, the action is great, the gunplay, the vehicles, the actors, everything! Based as fuck
When this finally came out on VHS, it was a constant play every weekend in the barracks. Our young. trained, testosterone and alcohol fueled bodies loved it. A few of the younger guys even got "Wolverines" tattoos. By the way, the remake sucked.
I don’t view it as pro war. I feel that any film that portrays war in a realistic way is anti war. I’d imagine this is how people would react if we (the US) were invaded. How effective us citizens would be, who knows.

excellent movie. Big plot hole. How does the Soviet Union get their soldiers to America without us seeing them? Even back in the 80's, our satellite system was good enough that we would have seen them, even if they tried to sneak from Siberia, through Alaska and over Canada. They never answer this. Same with if they tried to rush from Cuba. If anything, that would have been more believable....them hitting Florida coming from Cuba. But this movie came out when I was in 10th grade. So I loved it.
If you watched the movie, Powers Booth's character explained that the invaders flew over in planes disguised as commercial aircraft. My guess likely from Mexico which just had a communist revolution according to the movie.
Milius originally envisioned it as a coastal invasion and the characters as Malibu surfers. He'd been a Malibu surfer himself, as a teenager, and his best movie, Big Wednesday, is about Malibu surfers. The studio thought that wasn't relatable enough for a mass audience and made the setting more middle American and the characters football players. Milius, who wasn't known as a big compromiser, accepted the change. Attacking SoCal would have been at least a little more plausible than Colorado. Higher value target, for one thing.

I felt like that was the point. Our characters story is over, but the war is far from over.
I think the fact that it can go both ways as anti-war or pro-war shows how well written the story is. There's valid arguments for both.

I love the Yadda Yadda of the dogfight where they just show contrails and a cloud because of the limited budget.

I like watching both films,nice action pieces too. Good movie retrospective review,didn't know all the behind the scenes drama,mishaps and hard training to portray actors as guerrilla fighters. You can't actually take either film seriously tho,no one any military parachutes into any area of the US,that's pure fantasy. LOL. But,the films are entertaining to me.

In the decades since the Cold War ended, I've always wondered what sort of movies the Soviets made about us.
That being said, _Red Dawn_ takes the silver for 80's ridiculous "Let's play war" movies, only being eclipsed by _Iron Eagle_ .

Red Dawn is such a cool movie, really resonated with me as it reminded me of the plans I use to make of running to the mountains and waging guerilla warfare on the communists if they went dictatorial (always a possibility down here in South America).
The musi is great, the action is great, the gunplay, the vehicles, the actors, everything!

When this finally came out on VHS, it was a constant play every weekend in the barracks. Our young. trained, testosterone and alcohol fueled bodies loved it. A few of the younger guys even got "Wolverines" tattoos.
By the way, the remake sucked.

I don’t view it as pro war. I feel that any film that portrays war in a realistic way is anti war. I’d imagine this is how people would react if we (the US) were invaded. How effective us citizens would be, who knows.
Liberals/Democrats saying a movie depicting Americans defending their way of life, The Constitution, Liberty, as "PRO WAR" is just a softer version of what they say now about those people = White Nationalist, NAZI, Racists, Chrsto-Facist, etc. etc.
They have always hated America, even back then, it just wasn't so obvious.

excellent movie. Big plot hole. How does the Soviet Union get their soldiers to America without us seeing them? Even back in the 80's, our satellite system was good enough that we would have seen them, even if they tried to sneak from Siberia, through Alaska and over Canada. They never answer this. Same with if they tried to rush from Cuba. If anything, that would have been more believable....them hitting Florida coming from Cuba.
But this movie came out when I was in 10th grade. So I loved it.
They come from South America, thats why there wasnt hust russians but south americans as well.
If you watched the movie, Powers Booth's character explained that the invaders flew over in planes disguised as commercial aircraft. My guess likely from Mexico which just had a communist revolution according to the movie.
Milius originally envisioned it as a coastal invasion and the characters as Malibu surfers. He'd been a Malibu surfer himself, as a teenager, and his best movie, Big Wednesday, is about Malibu surfers. The studio thought that wasn't relatable enough for a mass audience and made the setting more middle American and the characters football players. Milius, who wasn't known as a big compromiser, accepted the change.
Attacking SoCal would have been at least a little more plausible than Colorado. Higher value target, for one thing.
