Here in the USA you have say Aunt Jemima pancake syrup, it's just sugar and butter flavored corn syrup, no maple at all. I grew up in Northern PA, lots of maple trees, so I always had maple syrup growing up. Actually my father's side of the family had a maple syrup business... butter/sugar flavored syrups are ok, but I guess when you grow up with Maple everything else is just a poor imitation.
Yeah I was gonna say… we like our Real Maple Syrup (tm) here in the northeastern United States too, I’m from New Hampshire and a lot of people in my hometown do syrup making as a hobby, maple products are sold at every tourist trap and museum gift shop… you do still have to pay extra for it at restaurants though which is kinda shitty

They are just using the surplus sausage from the sausage muffins with the buns from their standard burgers is my guess in whatever spare size boxes they have left
@@cjtquk I've seen similar things like this here in the US. As the cost of supplies/ingredients goes up companies have two options, charge more or reduce portion sizes (sometimes they do both). The fact that there's a sticker tells me that they shrunk the portion, but are using what remains of the old container. Then they will come in a new smaller one.
The crisping sleeve's inside is probably a susceptors. From Wikipedia "Susceptors are usually made of metallised film, ceramics or metals (such as aluminium flakes)." so yeah, it's probably metal. There are actually safe ways to microwave metal, which is why some even come with mital racks. Also, just a reminder that the inner walls of the microwave(I'm sure there's a better word to describe it) are completely metal.
the asian landlord showed me how to microwave a metal bowl, and i did so as head chef, and my uncle the owner of the restaurant freaked out because i put metal in the microwave lmao. its ok because its smooth, as he said....
It's mainly sharp or pointed edges which cause a problem in microwave ovens, because they act as focus points, getting extremely hot and converting the microwave energy into visible plasma and sparks. Which is why foil in the microwave is the worst idea - it is extremely thin for a start, and if there are any folds or crinkles, these make hundreds or thousands of these focus points, making sparks all over. Flat metal surfaces with no thin edges or sharp points are fine, because the microwaves just bounce off, like they do from the interior walls of the microwave oven. One of the worst microwave experiences I had was from heating water in a mug - which had one of those shiny iridescent coatings on the outside. The water heated up reasonably well, though didn't get to boiling point. But the coating on the mug got insanely hot because it was essentially a thin layer of metal, which I didn't find out until I tried to pick it up. The heating within the microwave oven is not uniform, because the intensity of microwave radiation varies a lot depending on the position and where the microwaves are bouncing around - this is why microwave ovens often have turntables to try and even out the heating for anything you are cooking. You can determine the pattern of where the microwaves are going with some thermal paper - the type used in fax machines and supermarket receipt printers. This paper contains a compound which turns black when heated, so the printers using it don't need ink, they just have a series of heating elements which are selectively activated in sequence to form the pattern of whatever they are printing out. Just lay some of this paper out on the bottom surface of the microwave oven (with the turntable removed if there is one) and spray in just enough water to make the paper damp. You can fix some to the side walls too if you like, using some paper tape like masking tape. Then run the microwave oven at full power for about 30 seconds. The moisture on the paper absorbs the microwaves and converts them to heat (this is how microwave ovens cook food), and the heat turns the paper black in areas where the microwaves are most intense. This reveals the pattern of where the microwaves are most and least intense.
Can we nominate Ashens for PM please? Consistent?✔ Knows the cost of a pint of milk?✔ Represents the common man? ✔ Talks like a human being?✔ Literally would be more competent than any pm in my lifetime.
If you tosted the buns within a short period of time, subsequent buns can get more toasty because the toaster is preheated instead of heating from cold.
Ashens gets a 10 out of 10 for consistency. This man has been doing the same thing since 2006 (Or 2004 if you count Google Video.) Watching a British man review tat or eat terrible food never gets old
I used to work at a pretty remote company with no canteen and not many nearby shops so one of the guys took to setting up his own tuck shop. He used to sell rustlers for a few quid, but he’d toast the bun, use his own sauce, real cheddar, sliced fresh tomatoes and lettuce. When you do all that, Rustlers are actually a very decent snack!
“I did a review of a cheap microwaveable hotdog and the bun just fell in half and everyone complained to me about it, It fell in half you watched it happened” that made me laugh to much because I remember that video and it bothered me but in a funny way, i love that you mentioned it here
It was because the bun was weak, not that the bun was cut in half, although the driving factor to that bun was that it was cut from top to bottom, we cut it from side to side
The prime minister joke was hilarious, and I'm not even British. Ashen, after 15 years, you are still the greatest entertainer on UA-cam. Hats off, sir.
@@mrwhoannon300 I hate the Tories but sadly at this point they're the best of the bunch. Even though they are terrible. And seem to be going through an especially bad patch. And I'm a lefty really. In my opinion the whole government needs an Overhaul. Boris was a strong leader in my opinion, should never have left. its nice to see ashens actually enjoying food he reviews. i love this channel its always been there for me through the good times and the bad thank you ashens.
Good thing you said "literally". I 'd hate for anyone to think you were speaking rhetorically. Or hyperbolically. Or ironically. Thank you for making that distinction.
I completely understand the way Ashens feels about the rib patties. We got them sometimes for school lunch and that was one of my favorite things they served.
Back when I was a teenager working in a cash & carry, I pretty much lived off of these things. The key with the buns, is to make sure you turn them over halfway through to prevent them going soggy. Sometimes I would even do them separately, for about 30 seconds in total and then add the burger back in after. When the ones with crisper sleeves came out it was a game changer. Oh the good old days 😆
Especially those bbq rib things... you know they're bad in every way and yet they taste phenomenal! Add some mature cheddar for extra taste and minus health points!
I didn't use UA-cam for a few years and recently came across your videos again. a refreshing change to see your videos are exactly the same as where I left off. Love it 😀
I literally still have no clue what people are even angry about. Was it the fact that the bun split completely in two, or was it the way the bun was cut? People seem to not be able to give a straight answer. What Ashens himself seems to think is that everyone got mad that the bun was cut into two halves, but I've seen people say that the problem was that he cut the bun in the wrong way.
@@Mortonbmx Literally everyone in Britain does that, it's the British custom when it comes to hotdogs. A bunch of Americans basically gang-pilled a British guy for doing something British. It just seems like a bit of a silly American-centric nonsense, if you ask me.

A box (or bag) of frozen pancakes is absolutely a thing here in the US. The reason for the viscosity of the "syrup" might be because in the US, pancakes are more often served with a corn-syrup based pancake syrup, rather than real maple syrup, which can be crazy expensive. As in, way more than five times as much money for the same amount of syrup.
frozen pancakes are a thing in sweden too, and they're honestly exactly the same as fresh ones. Granted these are thin ones, not thick fluffy american ones. We use syrup made from sugar beets, however. Feels just slightly less wholesome than honey.
Yep! Frozen pancakes and waffles are for sure a thing in the USA. It is nice to have when you have a bunch of kids and need to run off in the morning or if you work a lot and need fast breakfast.
Others have already said it, but it really shows Ashens genius in his content creation. His videos are very consistent. Other UA-cam channels are constantly trying to "innovate" which often just means they lose their original charm and alienate their original subscribers. You see it time and time again when the creator of a channel thinks of themselves as more important than the content they create and push more of their personality into their videos, which eventually takes away from the content. You end up unsubscribing because you realise that the channel you subscribed to is no longer the one you signed on for. Never change, Ashens. Found your videos about 12 years ago and I never feel like I've out of the loop when I jump back in.
I've been going through a horrible fever for 4 days but I swear seeing that Ashens uploaded a new video and that there is the word "microwave" in the title just cured me by 50%
One of the few UA-camrs who genuinely makes my day better. Great content, good vibes, funny. Went nuts when I forgot this channel name for a few months, went on a Reddit and Google search hunt until I found this channel again and it's been a nightly ritual watching Ashens.
I’ve been watching this man’s content since I was about eleven years old. I am now nearing the age of 20, and I still do. He hasn’t changed a bit, and I would never want him to. Thanks Stuart, you and your lovely brown couch have practically raised me.
When I was a child I INSISTED my parents buy me a rustlers hot Dog despite the fact we had no microwave (my parents are still slightly afraid of microwaves in the year 2022). My poor parents had to try to cook me this rustlers hot Dog on the stove and grill with no real idea of what they were doing 😂
The crisping sleeve IS "metal-y" - metal is perfectly fine to put in the microwave, especially if it's a high-resistance design like that, and it doesn't have jagged edges conducive to arc formation, and doesn't accidentally make contact with the microwave's inner metal shield. Or some combination of those elements.
You can put cake decorating tips in the microwave. Generally they're not in there long enough to cause a problem, as long as it doesn't touch the sides of the microwave.
@Latest Obssesion First off, FOIL, as related to the conversation is a metal, hammered into sheets and used to cover/protect food. I told you to check the definition RELATED TO THE CONVERSATION, but I guess your reading skills are as quick and as sharp as a butter knife in molasses. Secondly, the crisping sleeves used in microwaves are indeed metallic. They're called "susceptors" and are made of metallized films, ceramics, and metal (such as aluminum flakes).
@Latest Obssesion Congrats on knowing you're wrong! The foil sleeves you cook hot pockets and whatnot in are metal. You may've been sarcastic about it but you're right in that you're wrong.
@Latest Obssesion Dude, give it a rest. I recently purchased a new microwave and the manual explicitly tells you that you CAN put metal (and even aluminium foil) into it, as long as you keep it at least 2cm away from the edges. It even comes with a metal tri-stand like raiser for using the grill and a huge metal pan to heat frozen pizza. (You first start the grill to heat up the metal pan, then put in the pizza and the microwave oven uses both its microwaves as well as the grill to heat up the pizza. That whole "no metals ever into a microwave" was only a thing for the very early/first models and hasn't been a real concern since at least the early 2000s.
I have to admit I love the rib sandwich myself too, though I've found an amazing kitchen hack for that; put the meat-related slab product into a lightly oiled frying pan and cook 'til it has nice bits on it, and toast the bun in the toaster, assemble and it tastes just like real food... :P
I subscribed to your channel for this content and I'm glad it's back! I work at a 7-11 and sometimes these kinds of meals are all I can realistically manage. Even though they often aren't exactly the same over here in the states it's still very educational and gives me a good idea what to look out for.
@@K_ingh16 It is a convenience store/gas station. If you've ever seen Apu's store from The Simpsons, that is a parody of stores like 7-11, if not a direct parody. They have a whole bunch of 'instant meals' and microwavable things of questionable edibility. If you have ever heard of a 'Slurpee' (semi frozen sugary drink) that's where they come from.

We're pretty familiar with fake maple syrup here in North America. Even if you live somewhere that produces maple syrup, it's pretty expensive compared to the maple-flavored imitation stuff. The sort of thing I'd eat with a nice plate of pancakes at a restaurant, not cheap pancakes from a box or something.
@pookapalooka It's not just a specialty store thing. It's something you can buy at Walmart. But it's about 6 times more expensive per ounce than imitation syrup. (7 cents per ounce for the imitation and 45 cents per ounce for the real maple syrup).

i have such a soft spot for microwavable burgers. our elementary school actually had some delicious hamburgers back in the day. i remember being shocked by how good they were and they were the only thing on the school lunch menu (aside from hot ham and cheese) that didn't make me sick. i went years trying to find something similar and sure enough tried a frozen burger for grins and it tasted so similar to the school lunch burger of my childhood.
I absolutely swear by Rustlers' Chicken Subs. They are quite honestly the best thing you can eat out of a microwave from a fridge. Asda have their own brand of these and they are alarmingly similar - identical taste, setup, everything - and they taste just as good.
There are actually some newer style Rustlers burgers that come in a cardboard box that you place into the microwave without unpacking it. They're actually not too bad
I really enjoy the magic of these videos, for over 7 years now, these videos can make me eat lunch, or violently skip it. Don't ask, the violence is the magic... Just go with it, and I mean, it can be any meal.

I love these videos for some reason, i lost your channel some years ago when i lost a phone and had to make new accounts. Its sort of the same thing i get from those MRE videos. I love seeing the cheapo "is it worth buying? Will i get sick?" or like military industrial complex shelf stable food from other countries. Ive eaten my fair share of gas station burritos and burgers, they used to be a guilty pleasure of mine especially after getting off work in the middle of the night when all other shops are closed, most places like quick trip and 711 sell such a massive variety of food and some of it can be microwaved 3 feet from the shelf they are displayed on. Oh my god one of my favorites was this spicy chicken sandwich that had like pepper jack cheese on it, its so good in its own mushy microwavable way.
I live on the east coast US and I buy huge cheap packs of frozen pancakes like those. I actually enjoy them and they are fast. They don't indicate the option for toasting in a toaster, probably due to the danger of moisture. They come wrapped individually in packs of 3. You get a whole pile of the packs in one big pack. What I do is spray some nonstick on a plate, pour some egg substitute on it and lay the pancakes out over the eggs, microwave for about 2:30-3 minutes, and put on butter and syrup (or honey or jam). Wonderful fast breakfast. The spray is for the eggs. That stuff sticks to the plate in the microwave like gorilla glue.

Those chicken subs are gorgeous, especially you add some barbecue sauce to them in conjunction with the supplied mayonnaise. I'm sure that the crisping sleeve helps.
I find it hilarious when he mentions that one hotdog video. I'm 100% positive that he cut the bun in the wrong direction on purpose so that he could make everyone mad and then joke about it years later. I've heard him mention it twice now, about how the bun just supposedly fell apart on its own, and the first time I actually went back and checked because I thought "oh, wow, I hadn't realized that, I thought it was him but apparentely I was wrong!". When I watched it back, I burst out laughing at how unebelievably obvious it was that the cut was made by him.

The danger comes when there's places for an arc to form. Microwaving a spoon will do basically nothing, but the same with a fork is a bad idea
@@ALYZZAOFDEATHThunderbolts and lightning! Very, very frightening to me!
the asian landlord showed me how to microwave a metal bowl, and i did so as head chef, and my uncle the owner of the restaurant freaked out because i put metal in the microwave lmao.
its ok because its smooth, as he said....

It was because the bun was weak, not that the bun was cut in half, although the driving factor to that bun was that it was cut from top to bottom, we cut it from side to side

Yeah, but people generally use a lot less of the real stuff because the flavor is so much richer. Comparing them one-to-one isn't fair.

Yes, you can put a spoon in a microwave typically, or a knife, it's forks or crumpled aluminum foil that causes the arching.
I’ve been watching ashens since 2013/2014. Never change man

We're pretty familiar with fake maple syrup here in North America. Even if you live somewhere that produces maple syrup, it's pretty expensive compared to the maple-flavored imitation stuff.
