as a Malaysian, i really like how the Singapore film/shows industry is unafraid to explore wider topics. i remember they made a show about baba nyonya, another show about a love story between 2 immigrant workers (Filipina and Bangladesh), and a film about a Malay babysitter/nanny who groomed the Chinese boy under her care. although small, the Singapore film/show industry is quite diverse.

As a huge fan of Indian cinema, I'm really glad that you talked about Tumbbad...that one is a real gem ! Thank you for the other suggestions as well, can't wait to watch them all.
Tumbbad has such amazing atmosphere, lighting and soundtrack, even beyond just the horror aspects, the storytelling is so good, it's about generational greed and how it's a corrosive behavior that destroys men and breaking that cycle. It's one of the few Indian movies that feels more like international cinema, this movie is not like other traditional Bollywood movies and I'd recommend people give it a chance
Thank you for mentioning the Filipina domestic helpers who worked abroad as my mom was among them when I was an '80s kid. My two sisters-in-laws, three former classmates, and several of my female neighbors are presently domestic helpers despite all of them are high school graduates. I am so happy to see Tumbbad here. India has a rich history of horror stories, and good camp horror/thriller films. In the past decades the quality of these stories had gone down significantly. And Tumbbad was a breath of freshness, it took the story back to India's horror roots.
Tumbad is based on Stephen King's story Gramma. Hastur was a witch in it. It is kind of ironic to claim India having a rich history of horror stories when the story does not have Indian roots. It didn't even follow the regular Hindu folk lore style and is clearly written by an atheistic POV, with little regard to the fact that Hindus actually worship a goddess of wealth..

Hey! I highly recommend watching Hotel Mumbai (2019). Its an international film, around the the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Its a truly beautiful film, its cinematography is excellent and navigates the theme of social hierarchy really well.

The question of morality is not because they persue treasure but because they are showing willingness to do everything for treasure like protagonist leaving dough behind when other person comes for treasure knowing he doesn't knows ways to avoid danger and will fall prey to it.

Thank you so much for giving out information about the Philippines OFW (overseas Filipino workers) insight. There are lots of real horrifying stories of abuse, rape, murder, mistreatments and discrimination towards them esp to those who are poor and living on a knife's edge to support their family here. That right there is horror itself what they've been gone through. Edit: Btw, I cried at the end of Tigers are not Afraid scene. Such a powerful and thought-provoking film.
Tumbbad's theme was basically "Lobhe paap, paape mrityu" (Greed is a sin and the result is death). The massge was not that "Greed is bad" it was that the evaluation of "What is greed?". The father went into the mansion looking for gold but it was a necessity more than greed, but that greed had a limit, he knew the limit of how much he would take in one time that's why he cold come back alive every time. Yet the son didn't have any limit, that was greed and they faced the consequences. The pandit should have been happy with whatever he would get but he went to that masion looking for that gold, that was greed. The movie didn't condemn the man for wanting wealth, he was safe and sound all of the movie, yet in the end he paid the price of greed of his son who was greedy and he also by his influence became greedy as well. Wanting wealth so that you can live comfortably is not greed, it's what you deserve but wanting more that what you can have and decieving others for that is greed and the movie's massage was that.

Tumbbad is set in 1930's and 1940's India, specifically, remote region of Bombay Presidency. It was a budget film that did recover its budget and more at the box office but have become a cult classic once it came to OTT. It's storyline, theme, constant rain of the Western Ghats at remote location and its haunting cinematography has been praised by everyone.
Dark fact - the main character of the tumbad movie was going to sacrifice his son to save himself from hastar in alternate ending. They wanted to make tumbad a triology.
There's a recent horror movie surrounding children called "The Innocents", very realistic portrayal of children's behavior and it also has some supernatural elements.
A horror gem: Goedam. A korean miniseries of 15 minute horror stories that are some of the most visually gruesome and grotesquely beautiful things I've ever seen. It's available on Netflix.
Mexico has some awesome horror movies because we are mostly still in contact with the supernatural, we never turned our backs on it. I recomend "Supernatural" (yes, the word is the same in spanish and english), "Somos lo que hay" (not the piss poor US remake), the ancient wonder of "El Escapulario" and of course the movies of Enrique Taboada, the mexican grand master of horror.

Normilazation of violence is something my parents told me about, there was an 7 year long civil war in their country before they moved to europe and the violence, gunshots and sounds of artillery became so common that the avarage civillian was so desensitized that they went about their lives amidst the chaos in the last few years of conflict they went about their prewar lives as if everything was fine, they tried to work as normal and shops opened again all while neighbors had to be buried.

You should try seeing Kanthaara movie(recent release). It has supernatural elements related to God.
How?
totally it suprised me
@@utkarshsingh-rp2dq easy , cause I can't name any other hinduism based fictional story in that category
I don't think kanthara is out for digital release yet
@@Kpoping727official it's coming on Amazon Prime soon.
Zhang: *Describing the uncanny and terrifying world of Tigers are not Afraid*
Me, who grew up in Latin America: ...Wait that's just growing up in Latin America
I just want to say that I enjoy your videos very much. I have just come across two of your videos today and they are very well put together, witty and informative. Well done and keep up the good work 💯
9:57 That scene sort of reminds me of Deep Root Disease from Gemini home entertainment. It’s an analog horror video series right here on UA-cam. You should watch through it if you haven’t already done so.
Tigers are not afraid, although a horror, cuts you deep emotionally. The end where she meets her, almost made me cry.
Tumbaad is great, should recieve more recognition.
Will watch The Maid
Using horror to tell moral stories are surprisingly good.
From Thailand, there were a few good blockbuster films as you mentioned Shutter . The other worth mentioning is Nang Nak , the ghost wife. It was a box office success, not only it had some eeriness,it's also touching and a good storyline. Give it a try.
Oh man I got a bit scared when I first saw the video and it had the comment section locked, anyways, I'm happy to see Tigers on this list, fantastic film I have yet to found it in physical form.
I just stumbled upon your channel. Saw the Kung Fu Hustle video. I love movies and I love your love for movies. You have wonderful taste and a master of disection. Thank you, you made a fan for life and I'll be binging your videos. Thank you.
Another excellent essay, as to be expected from this channel.
Are you dumb movie collect 3x money 😂
Dark fact - the main character of the tumbad movie was going to sacrifice his son to save himself from hastar in alternate ending.
They wanted to make tumbad a triology.
There's a recent horror movie surrounding children called "The Innocents", very realistic portrayal of children's behavior and it also has some supernatural elements.
Thanks for some interesting Halloween picks.
hope you have a happy halloween dude
A horror gem: Goedam. A korean miniseries of 15 minute horror stories that are some of the most visually gruesome and grotesquely beautiful things I've ever seen. It's available on Netflix.
Really looking forward to see the CINEMA talk about The Fog Hill of Five Elements
Thank you for bringing these to my attention! I'm checking these out. Tigers is on shudder.
Love the whole video, especially your conclusion (always enlightening)!! 👍👍👍
YOOOOO SINGAPORE REPRESENT thank you for featuring our stuff :)
Thank you for the discoveries
"The scariest thing isn't the ghost, [but] is the human heart"
late to the video but you comparing Tumbadd with Junji ito clicked a switch in my head! even as a kid junji ito was my favourite comics and my favourite movie was tumbadd, it just fascinated me so much I just never made the connection between them. Video is great analysis and introduced me to movies I previously did not know of such as Tigers are not Afraid, thank you!
As a fellow subscriber i would like to recommend you a psychological horror movie called 'Manichithrathazhu'(1993). It is a movie from mollywood industry. And this movie has cult classic following.
The writting and research for this film alone took 3 years. And has a great visuaI representation to the character and their mental state it is still kind of rare to see such films. I think you will love this. When you get the time, give it a watch
I'm so excited to see you cover hispanic films as well, thx!
i love this essay so much! and tumbaad is the best indian horror movie I've ever seen
If you see this, I highly suggest you do a review on Nang Nak, a Thai horror which was remade as Mae Nak the more popular horror/comedy. It's slightly outdated with cgi but its a great watch!
Tigers Are Not Afraid and Tumbbad are so good. Everyone should watch them.
Tuumbad was great. Loved it.
I have seen The Maid, one of the best expositions about the Chinese Hungry Ghost Month. I have heard of the other two and am interested in seeing both.
You tell a horror movie to such a beautiful scene. enjoyable.
I was wondering if you'd do an essay on the early episodes of tmkoc (it's now available with english subtitles) it's arguably the single most iconic tv show in India.
Normilazation of violence is something my parents told me about, there was an 7 year long civil war in their country before they moved to europe
and the violence, gunshots and sounds of artillery became so common that the avarage civillian was so desensitized that they went about their lives amidst the chaos in the last few years of conflict they went about their prewar lives as if everything was fine, they tried to work as normal and shops opened again all while neighbors had to be buried.
Tumbbad was incredible and an amazing soundtrack
thank you for talking about the problem happening with Filipino Domestic helpers. As a filipino, its really sad
Yes I watched The Maid in the cinema back then. A good watch.
Awaiting the take of the Thing, whilst seeing the essay from Halloween 2022.
Omg, vuelven! is my favorite movie, is so horrowing and Idk if i can ever watch it again because of the situation. Thank u so much for talking about México!
vuelven is the name of tigers are not afraid in méxico
Alessandra de Rossi, who portrayed the maid, is a Filipino actress. She's really good.
So glad you had a Dracula cameo. Love this channel
Tumbad is an excellent movie a must watch.
Oh my, I would never thought that a mexican movie will be in this channel, it makes me so happy and proud to see that a film made in my country would receive this attention.
I knew it, the one from SG must be The Maid. IIRC, it's one of two SG movies I've ever watched and I truly love it(I forget about the other movie's title). It's up there on my list as one of the best ghost horror movie.
Tumbbad looks promising. I'll try to find it and gives it a watch.
the dark story more horror than the ghost either the jump scare. if we have to choose, which one is more horror, got visit by ghost or some ppl quitely get inside with weapons?
Sad fact: even though storywise & cinematogry wise tumbbad is so great, it barely earned profit and didn't even nominated for oscars from India, that just shows how rigged the Indian bollywood is, the same year they sent a shit movie. Just bcoz the director of tumbbad was a new comer.
Thanks for shouting out Mexican cinema! It has a rich history many people overlook.
Alessandra Derossi from my country (Philippines) did so well in that movie! I hope it gets restored with a better quality so many could watch.
Tigers Are Not Afraid is 👌
Gonna have to see the other two.
If you talk about horror movie, there is a good horror movie from Indonesia. The title is "Pengabdi Setan", in English is "Satan's slave".
Thank u so much for add tumbadd
Seen all three. Great films ~ Tumbbad was especially good. Great analysis
holy crap, it feels nice to see a filo actress on your channel!
