- Led by Justine Rinnooy Kan, former Dorset Curatorial Fellow at the National Gallery, we explore the story of Rembrandt's iconic work, 'Self Portrait at the Age of 34' .
Here, Rembrandt carefully illuminates the skin of his face, portraying the early signs of aging and imperfections that add a sense of realism to the portrait.
Join us as we unravel the enigmatic layers of his self-portrait, a captivating piece that stands as a testament to the Dutch master's exceptional talent.
Rembrandt's 'Self Portrait at the Age of 34' is on loan to Brighton Museum & Art Gallery in 2024 as part of our National Treasures programme.
To celebrate our Bicentenary, 12 paintings from the collection are being lent to 12 venues across the UK. See various locations and visit: www.nationalga...

Rembrandt is one of my favorite artists.
I went to see Rembrandt's self portrait aged 63 when it was loaned to Kendal's Abbot Hall gallery in 2016. I found it so mesmerising it was all I could do to pull myself away from it.
I really like these close looks. There are so many things I'd never notice by myself.
Loved every moment of this. Learned something new with twenty seconds. Thank you.
Very enjoyable and informative video, thank you.
I went to Rembrandt's house and studio in Amsterdam, well worth a visit.
Excellent presentation! Succinct and engaging. Well done to all involved. Rembrandt was truly special.
Wonderful video - thanks for sharing
Excellent explanation of one of the finest self portraits of the great Dutch master!! This self portrait depicts the very best of Rembrandt!! The artist at the full height of his prodigiously gifted skills and talent!!😊😊❤❤
What a pleasant novelty, to have a Dutch-speaking curator who can pronounce the Dutch names properly (is that how one pronounces 'Huygens'? Sadly I'll never be able to emulate that convincingly...) Very informative.
Geweldige analyse!
Groeten uit Amsterdam ❤️
Extremely well done. Very well organized and presented. 7 minutes well spent, but given the quality I wish it was a full hour-long program. So many questions to ask and be answered even about his self-portraits. Clothing, expression, lighting, pose: How do these compare across his self portraits, and across his portraits of others? Which used so-called Rembrandt-lighting? And which did not? How does the sequence of Rembrandt portraits compare with the sequence of Dürer portraits from (a bit more than) a century earlier? Etc.
Rembrandt is a great artist
Doubtlessly, though not a personal favorite of mine. I prefer his drawings and etchings over his paintings (Rembrandt is one of the greatest draughtsmen I've encountered).
👏👏👏👍Magnífico!
The narrator is an articulate speaker in English, which may be her second language (I don't want to presume). Yes, he exudes confidence in this painting. Thank you!
Rembrandt:
The master of the shadows .
OH MY….He looks like he could walk right out of his pose …..
Okay. Thank you very much.
And what about his arts out of
the important time with
Saskia…?!
We know it too.
