I love "It Happened On 5th Avenue" as well as, "The Bishop's Wife". "A Holiday Affair", "White Christmas", "Christmas In Connecticut", "The Man Who Came To Dinner", "The Little Shop Around The Corner". All classics on my list. I watch all of them almost every year. I seem to have OD'd on "It's A Wonderful Life"
I discovered this wonderful movie when I purchased a Christmas movie pack that also included, "Christmas in Connecticut." "It Happened on 5th Avenue" has now moved into my all-time favorite Christmas movies. Thanks so much for the heartwarming review!
Like you, I stumbled upon this film six or seven years ago (maybe on TCM) and have made it part of my Holiday viewing ever since. SO much to recommend it, but Victor Moore takes the spotlight from the beginning and never lets go. His wonderful, off-beat presence gives this unfairly overlooked treasure it's heart & soul. I also never miss "The Bishop's Wife", "The Man who Came to Dinner", "Holiday Inn" and "Miracle on 34th Street". Marvelous, timeless Classics that always put me in a Holiday mood. Thank you for your terrific commentary!
I recently found the Man Who Came to Dinner, also, it was great. I adored the main actor from the Bishop's Wife, it was interesting seeing Bette Davis play a secondary role, but she was great. You ought to find the great one with Humphrey Bogart, and Peter Ustinof, called, We are No Angels. Funny, and sweet, three run away prisoner's find a way to help a family they had intended to rob, but befriend, and well, you have to watch it.
Love it! Love the little dog, love how the hobo is loved by all, so many things I can't begin to name them all. Sorry I found it so late in life, but now enjoy it each time it's shown on TCM.
I found this gem of a movie several years ago on AMC, when it was only old classical movies, no live shows then. I enjoyed it, I knew the young man later from Hazel reruns, the Alan Hale Jr, as you mentioned. I knew the rich man as the father of Mrs. Drysdale, on Beverley Hillbillies, and on Parent Trap. The story kept me entertained and I loved the family atmosphere, and camaraderie among the cast, too. I like to find a good version of the true Christmas Story, of the Nativity. I enjoy the Christmas Carol, and the funny one with Bill Murrey, Scrooged. I watch this when I can find it, Christmas in Connecticut, It is a Wonderful Life, The Bishop's Wife, and We are No Angels. I adore that one, Mr. Bogart was such a great actor, I wish he had done more comedies. Also, the cute, A Christmas Affair, with Robert Mitchem and Janet Lee.
This has become one of my favorites, too, over the last few years. That doesn't mean that I watch it every year -- sometimes I go months without turning the tv on.
My favorite Christmas Movies are:"March Of The Wooden Soldiers","The Christmas That Almost Wasn't","A Christmas Carol","An American Christmas Carol" and"It Happened On 5th Ave".
This film is wonderful and thank you for the fantastic review. I am a huge fan of the casting of this film. My favorite Christmas film is the 1951 British adaptation of Dickens', "A Christmas Carol" (although it was released under the title, "Scrooge.")
Yes!!! One of my absolute favorites!!! Omgeez first time I ever watched it was several years ago, never even heard of it until it i was desperately searching for a movie late late late on sleepless night and it was aired as one of those “you might also be interested in” type of situation 🤩🥹😄👏
Apparently the Harry F. Sinclair House is about where the mansion would be but doesn’t quite look the same en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_F._Sinclair_House
8:38 I am going to order this movie to watch, and buy one as a Christmas gift to a family member this year. I enjoyed this review. My first favorite is the original A Christmas Carol with Alastair Simm as Ebenezer Scrooge. I love watching the original movie, Miracle on 34th Street, The House Without a Christmas Tree (Jason Robards) Christmas in Connetticut, The Shop Around The Corner, White Christmas, It's A Wonderful Life. I also like to watch the movie, starring Fred McMurray that is called The Miracle of the Bells, and lastly The Homecoming a story of Christmas on Walton's Mountain, starring Patricia O'Neil.

Considering all the homeless in our American cities, this seems like a timely film.
