A Serbian film
As Above, So Below... Chatted about it with another patron in the discord this morning. The inspiration from Dante's Inferno is worth deeper conversation. 🖤 Whatever you come out with is gonna be good, so I'm not picky.
Check out "The Loved Ones", directed by Sean Byrne, a real hidden gem!
Good thing the theatrical ending ruins the entire message of the film because test audiences didn’t like feeling bad about themselves! Yaaaaaay!
Yah I am glad test audiences are becoming less of a thing because of that very reason.
Yeah. When I saw this in the theater I walked out pissed off. Why did they throw all that "god this, god that" bullshit into the film at the last minute? And then Neville gets killed off? And then I find out years later that what I saw wasn't even the original ending? I hate when Hollywood does shit like that.
Idk about you guys, but for me the original ending feels much deeper and realistic than the theatrical ending.
Annnnd.... Will Smith kills a dog.
The movie was also clearly made with the original ending in mind. Despite what the marketing would suggest, the movie is rather unconventional tone and pacing-wise for an action-horror movie, clearly aiming for something higher.
The director's cut ending makes me feel a lot better about that movie in hindsight.
Sucks the studio interfered.
the directors cut is the definative version in my opinion
I never understood why they released the uncut version of the film as the "Alternate Cut". Its how the movie was suppose to end.
@Vasilijan Nikolovski I have to agree, a movie NEEDS the proper ending, take SOUTHPAW for example, it's a simple story, pretty good boxing scene, but the ending made that movie something really deep
are you talking about the wi smith version? didnt know there was another cut
When I first learned of this movie and it had Will Smith in it, I thought it was a sequel to I, Robot.
I know better now.
That would have been an interesting movie too.
@@IsaacClodfelter Yeah, we really need a I, Robot sequel.
I'm no fan of Will Smith, but I, Robot was a great movie. The adaptation of I Am Legend starring Will Smith is bullshit though. Last Man on Earth is the better adaptation, although I'd recommend Omega Man over the Will Smith bullshit version.
@@IsaacClodfelter Yeah. Neville finds himself in a brand new world where there is a raise in robots.
You p stupid if you watched I am legend and thought it was a sequel to I robot
They dont have the same name, I am legend doesnt have robots, the movie w will smith explains what happened p well and not once does it mention robots.
70’s horror cinema is literally just “we live in a society, the movie”
yeah people now a days make horror films because they grew up on the classics or just want easy money which is why its so easy to parody cause the tropes and clichés its based on aren't what the original horror films usually not inspired by other horror films were started from aka a basis a real reason to make such horror in the first place ..something like last house on the left is literally about the vietnam war and drugs and government and the way kids were protesting their own parents who just wanted what was best for them yet today a stupid person would watch it and think its a scary film about crazy people...missing the entire set up of the girls doing everything wrong girls back then expressing freedom used to do and thus end up dead...smdh....and again its not even about the plot its about war...notice how stupid the cops are...I wonder why they are written so over the top goofy in such a horror film..oh because the creator wes craven had a message he was sending...but now a days every cop Is dumb in horror films cause its just a thing to do I guess cause a competent cop would end the plot
Asmosis Jones Y-you do know I was just making a meme right?
Not 70s but there actually is a Brian Yuzna body horror/psychological thriller film simply called "Society"😂
Isn't almost everything about society?
@@razkable fuck you for your terrible sentence structure
The director's cut of the Will Smith version is way better then the theatrical
yeah true but it's unrealistic sadly :/
@@charlieblood4581 what does that mean?
Charlie Blood Yeah Charlie, what does that mean?
I love how you can see in the directors cut the main vampire sees how broken up will smith is about his mistakes and realization his whole purpose has been bs and a lie and how he should just leave the broken man alone..thats very relatable....that moment he just kinda looks at him and stops being mad is like looking in a mirror..its brutal...that kind of weight would cause me to commit suicide...to realize your the boogeyman when you thought you had a good reason and better purpose as a nice person is devastating...
Asmosis Jones He actually was doing the right thing, he’s trying to bring back us.
I feel like I should mention that Neville can hardly be blamed for his actions.
It isn't just that he wasn't willing to consider the idea of the vampires being civilized themselves, up until the ending, he had never even seen any rational vampire. The only ones he had ever encountered were either asleep or part of the horde that pestered him from outside his house every night. These ones, while still intelligent enough to speak and attempt strategies like seduction, were so aggressive that they would never have formed a society.
Neville liked mostly
Evil
Vampires
But he killed to many civilized ones to be forgiven he’s not to blame he ended up on the wrong side of history because of circumstance a tell

This man could grab the most basic movie with no deeper meaning in it and add one or find it where we didn't look
Maybe but this is the exact point of I am legend and always has been
It's... not just him. It's the intented meaning anyway.
The Will Smith movie completely turns the message of the book on its head. Every new movie became less accurate and meaningful than the last because Hollywood prefers that its audience does not think about profound issues such as the line between good and evil. Thats why Marvel movies are so successful now because they provide a black and white picture of good and evil. (Also probably why so many SW fans hated TLJ).
Eh most art is political
@@kaanc9344 totally agree, and what always terrified me is how Marvel's Avengers is such a huge success, while, for example, 2009's Watchmen is still very underrated movie, despite having much deeper meaning and message than entire Marvel's cinematic universe. God, what a shame!
This channel has totally spoiled me when it comes to film analysis. 💕

Spoiled to pretentious shitty sudo deep horse shit?
I don’t even *need* to say that the old ending is better than the official one, and that the test audiences who ended up getting it ultimately changed were just.....wrong for the 2007 adaptation.
The original ending DOES speak to the underlying tones, and message that the book/earlier adaptations of the movie(s) are intended to convey.
At the point/In the scene where he exits the locked room with the female "dark-seeker", taking with him no discernible means of defense or escape available.. the viewer is made immediately to feel the very *real* sense of danger he's opted to put himself into in order to make, what he feels is, the correct moral choice.
We *IMMEDIATELY* get the sense that he's mere moments from death. Especially after the female dark-seeker is returned to her -boyfriend- significant other+, the assumed implication is simply that they (dark-seekers) will no longer be held back, and will attack and kill him. We're even shown a glimpse of his "Failure to Cure" wall, and the countless photos taken of the failed test subjects.. Yet ANOTHER reason for the dark-seekers to want to tear him apart....
But.. they don't. They essentially are happy to follow the lead of the alpha..
Implying that it is in fact the creatures are perhaps more human then the actual human himself.
dajosh42069 shut up nerd, you are impressing me.
The test audiences arent wrong, the writers/directors who decided to use test audiences are wrong. The majority is very rarely right. The majority of people like Transformers and other popcorn flicks. The majority of people dont like to think when they watch films.
@@manofhonor1685 Perhaps.
@@purplehaze2358 some of my favorite films are niche films. Like Bladerunner 2049. I like slow paced films that are character driven. I dont like when characters have to tell me things, I want them to *show* me. I appreciate subtlety. A lot of people dont have the patience to sit and watch a 3 and a half hr movie, especially if it's slow paced. And they will say it's bad if there isnt action or sex for a whole hour. That's honestly the majority of people. Of course not in this comment section because people that watch film critic type reviews usually have a deeper appreciation for writing/film.
But yeah TLDR what's good for everyone/majority usually isnt the best written cause most moviegoers are casual.
I am still waiting Guillermo del Toro’s third movie about spanish civil war...It would be great if you can cover Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth
When i was 7 Years Old my parents took me to see Pan's Labyrinth, even though i was too young and innocent to appreciate, let alone understand the conflict of the human characters and the fantasy stuff scared the hell out of me, especially the fucking Pale Man.. Having watched that movie recently on Netflix, i can now say i love this movie as a young adult, Guillermo Del Toro is probably my favourite director by this point.
Guillermo del Toro does a great job with sympathetic monsters!
been askin him to do this for a month or so,,,,and wont stop till he does
honowo and villains.
UberNoodleX He said that he wanted to tell how wounds of Spanish Civil War effected Mexicans without Hollywood’s insistence on a happy ending. That’s why he tell those stories using children as protagonists to emphesize how the most innocent ones were effected by the war. I watch his interviews a lot but can’t quote each and everyone but I believe he said third one is not yet to be done for this triology.
Check out "The Loved Ones", it's a twisted Australian horror film, a hidden gem in my opinion
The Hand with Michael Caine is another forgotten horror movie directed by Oliver Stone, its not a masterpiece but its decent.

I actually adore the 2007 movie - original ending, of course. It's a movie that made me feel lonely. The dog, man...
Please read the book.
Samantha😪😪😪
Fck the dog
The dog hits almost everyone in the soft spot, it’s one of the greatest scenes that I hate watching R.I.P 😭
John wick understood how Robert felt
I rewatched this movie so much as a kid. I really never picked up on the whole “Man is the real Monster” thing.
I just really loved the survival aspect of it all. It was kind of a budding survivalist fantasy. Scavenging a deserted and eerily quiet cityscape. Avoiding the dark and only moving during the day. Fortifying your home and rigging all sorts of traps and defense systems.
So many zombie shows and movies focus on the human character drama and push that other people are the real enemy, not the zombies (I.e. The Walking Dead).
But I actually really liked how the conflict in this movie was actually between one man and the mutant vampire zombies around him.
The only other humans in the plot are actually friendly, and there is barely any dialogue. Mostly action and visual storytelling.
It was a really cool movie in my eyes.
Your description reminds me of enjoying a survival video game
Guys, I beg you to read the book. It is so much better than the movie. It's timeless and absolutely haunting.
And it is such a short read too, it took me barely two hours to finish, while it stayed in my thoughts for much longer
The short stories at the end were also wonderfully horrifying.
@@TheWerewolfKnight Yeah, I picked it up at the airport to read on the flight. One of the nicer surprises I've had in buying books at the airport

Danny Boyle actually said another sequel to 28 Days Later is likely it was reported a couple of months back. Him & Alex Garland have an idea for it they called "really good" so I would say it's only a matter of time until it happens.
I’ve been wanting another one for a long time. I actually liked 28 weeks later as well and imo, it had the best opening in the zombie movie genre
Maybe they'er waiting a couple of decades, to make a "28 Years Later"!
@@morlockmeat Yeah after "28 Months Later" obvi
One of the best openings in film, not only horror.
28 Weeks obviously takes a bit of a dip after the amazing opening, but it still stands out as one of the few good sequels in the genre.
I want to 28 Months Later to be in French since the final scene of 28 Weeks Later showed zombies ravaging all over Paris.

I always hated scary movies as a kid, even though my cousins always loved them. Once I saw night of the living dead and house of a thousand corpses I started to see them for the alternative way to crazy cinematic experiences instead of a masochistic past time.
Honestly I'd recommend Dead Set. It's on Netflix and is kinda like 28 days later just shorter and just more hopeless. Give it a watch cause it's only a couple hours long in total and it's pretty good
well now that you've mentioned Cormac McCarthy you have to talk about his work. Probably one of the greatest writers of our generation.
If you like Cormac McCarthy check out The Sunset Limited, there isn’t a single ounce of fat in that script. It’s a low budget HBO movie, but the performances by Samuel L Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones are unforgettable.
I am so tired of seeing people think the creatures were zombies. I'm so glad you mentioned the book and the fact they were vampires. This book was so creepy and I still enjoyed the movie even with it's ending.
High Tension. It's early 2000's French horror. It's so brutal!
God i remember that movie. I watched the French version way back when i was in elementary school. Really stuck with me to this day.
That’s a great one. But I still couldn’t figure out some of it to this day...I think it has some pot holes or something...but still a great one. Always recommended

I was pretty young when I watched I am Legend. Never saw it that way. Good video Ryan! Keep it up! You never fail to surprise me!
Dun Dust My dad rented it off Netflix when I was young, and it came in the mail. We watched it right before I went to bed. I had nightmares
Charlie Dude Damn dude! Same!
My dad also rented the movie from a video rental shop.
One of my favorite books of all time. Thank you for focusing on the book and not so much on the movies, so that the discussion could be about the actual meaning of the story.
I grew up with The Omega Man so I'm partial to that version.
The Terror would make for an interesting video.
Terror season one is incredible. I love it.
I would be 100% down for a video about "The Road", I love everything about it from the colour pallet to the story and the characters. The themes of preserving innocence and joy in an otherwise bleak and inhospitable world are beautiful.
The book is amazing, super underrated. It was one of the inspirations for Stephen King’s career. That’s definitely saying something about it. Honestly if you have never picked up this book, do yourself a favour and give it a read.
There were some really great cartoon shorts related to the 2007 release that I actually liked as much as I liked the movie (with the director's cut ending). Love your channel!
I still like "I Am Legend", yeah the CGI is weak but don't let that stop you from enjoying the movie, there are so many things they did right. At least he managed to make a sequel to I, Robot.
The problem was never the cg though, it was the story. It took the semi complex story of "could man be the monster" and answered it "nope, isn't Will Smith awesome"
I'm fine with that, doesn't bother me.
R.i.p doggy. Animal deaths tear me up. Good book and movie. I do enjoy the alternate ending better.
Especially when a dog goes out defending his human or the dog's human has to put his dog down. Will Smith's had both . Brutal.
Except the deaths of tasty animals. amirite?
Now I absolutely cannot wait for your "The Road" video. One of my favorite post apocalyptic books, and the movie did it so much justice.

Oh dear God ! Thank you SO much for making this! I understand the whole story way better now!
I personally think that The Book Of Eli is a great post apocalyptic movie too. Great story, and a good look into how religion has affected people, and always will.
When I first watched the 2007 film I had no idea there was 2 endings and the one I watched was the directors ending, and I don't think I would have liked the film as much if it was the studio ending
Also, “Wake In Fright”. Always love your videos. Thanks for the great content.
Loved the video. It once again makes me long for a true/truer adaptation of a story I love
Gotta do “The Road”.
I really enjoyed the loneliness aspect of the Will Smith movie. His dog is the only thing keeping him sane in a completely dead city, minus the infected that roam the streets at night. After the dog dies what little sanity he had left died with it. I really think a video game based on the Will Smith movie would be really interesting. I've always wanted to explore a dead city like that, going into what was once people's homes and seeing their lives based on their belongings.
I'm a writer and I Am Legend is my favorite book. I read it every few years. The book is weird, but has a great sense of loniness. The movies are ok, but the book is great. No story has topped it. Great video.
Unfortunately they never made a video game on I Am Legend. An open world game where Neville must keep on experimenting, finding food and resources, while he searches for survivors with Sam. It would have been great.
They pretty much did..they called it 'dying light.' 🤔
Ive read the original book 5 times over. Its so good

Really great one, Ryan!
What a profound video. I really enjoyed I Am Legend when I was younger. And appreciated the directers cut ending far more.
I am legend is an amazing book. I have a copy back home. again, it's amazing.
Neville is a hard character to root against, we see him try very hard to just survive and how much willpower it takes from him.
How his past haunts him, how he has to deal with several of them at his door teasing him every night...
the dog chapter is specially heartbreaking, because of how much effort he puts into making the dog trust him, but in the end it was too late and the only company he had, after being alone for a long time, is gone in the turn of a page.
this is one thing that was handled really well in the Will Smith movie imo. Him singing to his dog while she's turning and he can't do anything to stop really brings out the onion cutting ninjas you know?
Never watched the other 2 adaptations, so I can't comment on them.
I Am Legend is a great book. The copy I had also had some creepy short stories in it.

aw man I was away last week (up north in fact!) and thought the Jacob's Ladder video had only gone up yesterday and I'd have to wait a week for the next one so this was a really nice surprise to come home to.
Talk about TREMORS!!!
While the movies projected large scale global social issues of their time, I think the book was more of an intimate statement about the pressure to conform to conservative 1950's standards, a time when something as simple as Elvis' gyrating hips was seen as provocative. I'd argue that in the book Neville is still the good guy, right through until the end. A relate-able character struggling with stress, depression, anxiety, and the pressure to simply give in to the horde that surrounds his house nightly. Rather than seeing him as the villain for seeking out vampire nests during the day, and testing out experimental cures on unwilling subjects, I'd argue that it's an example of stoicism - staying the course despite the consequences. I've always viewed the books ending as the ultimate rejection of conforming to social norms, an ending that would have been equally suited to A Clockwork Orange if Alex were given the opportunity.
See, that's why I'd argue the opposite point: his viewpoint is inherently conservative. He wants to return things to how they used to be and impose it on everyone. He doesn't believe they should have that choice because their thoughts and feelings aren't worthy of consideration. He will murder and torture them if he thinks it will make them "normal" (like some kind of therapy, to convert them) . That's not how hippies ever acted. That's how extremist conservatives act. The premise under this reading is that the hippies won, and this is the self-aggrandising narrative the old guard tells himself to excuse his behaviours.
Think about it - who imprisoned people they deemed a lower type of person, tortured them, experimented on them, murdered them for daring to care about their crimes? It wasn't radical progressives. It was the institutions.
Neville is what happens when you refuse to reexamine your worldview, when it's clear to everyone else that your "superior" race that you claim is the sole civilised people is disproven.
yo, im loving this channel
I am watching this today, on April 1, 2020, and the ideas presented in this video are very more crystalized since covid-19. Isolation, what being totally alone feels like, this frightening "thing" (which is a virus that has scientific basic, but we don't know how it works exactly) outside, haunting us and our world changing. Thank you for all your effort and your brilliant body of work.
I actually liked the theatrical ending of 'I Am Legend' better than the directors cut version. I thought him killing himself was more fitting for the depression slide he was going on, since he had found the cure but lost everything he loved, there was no point in living any more. I understand the second ending is deeper, but I find it very out of place when the film (in my eyes) was about Robert as a person going through the loss of being immune and alone, just trying his best because no one else could. Plus he felt he had to give back to the world for letting things get as bad as they did, so him sacrificing himself is a bitter sweet ending.
I love 'I am legend' but I still think the creatures should of been practical
I agree. the cgi did not age well and it even looked hooky then . Makeup and prosthetics would have been a better deal
