Have you ever thought about how difficult the everyday lives of disabled people are?? She has a spinal cord injury, so everything she does in life is difficult, most especially if her home isn’t modified and very few are. Any food you don’t have to cook tastes better when you typically have to manage in a kitchen where the stove and counters are too high to reach. She probably has people to help her shower at the jail, but not at home….her home is probably a prison, did you ever think of that? And I’m sure she feels a tremendous amount of rage at her situation which probably influenced her behavior when fighting with her sister; it must be hard to watch her living a life she can only dream about. I’m certainly not saying it’s right, just that I understand.

i missed 31 days of school one year in high school. My parents never encouraged me to go to school and would often refuse to take me (we lived out of district so there were no buses). Now, I'm 27 years old and wish someone would have intervened and told me how important it was to go to school. i've managed to get my life back on track and, last year, earned my Master's degree, but a lot of things would have been easier for me if I had someone who made me attend school as a kid.

Very interesting seeing DiSanto dealing with the minors.
Frankly I'm worried for the safety of the two mothers dealing with the sons who won't do, well, anything they're supposed to. The second one, who said she was "losing' him, kept emphasizing how much stronger he was than her. You don't even think about that, unless....you've been thinking about it. In other words, she is frightened, physically frightened by him.
The two boys are going the "I'm tougher than you, you can't make me do anything" route.
The girl is going the "I'm so little and sad, don't be mean to me" route. Though she very well may be anorexic, and have some underlying problem that she isn't able to talk about.
    Which is an alarming thought.

I empathize with the last Mom. It's very hard when you have a child that's as big or bigger than you are, refuses to listen and you feel like you've lost all control. I commend her for saying "I don't want to lose him, however, I don't know what to do". I'm glad the Judge is sympathetic to her and seems to be willing to give her some help. Some might say that if Mom had done her job early on they wouldn't be in this situation. That's not always the case. She spoke about an IEP, which tells me that 1)the son may have some learning challenges and 2) the Mom has been working with the school for a while to get help. I wish her luck and hope she can get some help for both of them.

My mom had to go to court for me. I was dropping out. We both met with the principal, who refused to sign the drop out paperwork (I was under 16, her signature was required.) We went back and forth about it for over an hour before finally leaving a filled out copy of the paperwork with the school and going home.
I was enrolled at the local community college, waiting for the next quarter to start when we got the letter. I hadn't attended high school for 20 whole days! So off to truancy court we went.
When we were called up, my mom explained what had happened. That I was dropping out because the school had argued in court that my restraining order against my ex, who was convicted of threatening to kill me, needed to be amended so he could continue to attend as a senior. It would "irrevocably harm his ability to graduate on time" to have to transfer schools. They didn't care about the harm I experienced running into him between classes.
The judge said to my mom, "ma'am, do you have some time today?" My mom told him she had taken the day off. He said, "Okay, I'm gonna ask you to sit back in court for a bit." And as we were returning to the benches, he turned to the clerk of courts and said, "Can you see about getting the principal down here? I want to hear what she's thinking."
He made her stand up in court and justify herself. It did not go well for her. He signed my drop out papers himself and wished me luck.
After I graduated from community college with an AS in Criminal Justice, I met him again while touring the courthouse... my new workplace. I assumed he wouldn't remember me but he did! He was delighted to hear I wasn't there on a case! He passed right at the beginning of Rona (cancer got him) so they had a zoom memorial service. I was lucky to be one of dozens who spoke about his impact in their lives. He was a good judge.
Anyway, point is. There are lots of reasons people end up in truancy court. Another mom there on my day had a son with leukemia and they were getting treatment in a city 100 miles away. The school knew this, didn't care.

I dealt with this with son 14. Refused to get out of the car at school. I drove to the County Sherrif Department...yes an officer talked to him. He had two choices that day. Get drug out of our car to talk or walk out. He walked with the sheriff a bit who told him he was lucky to have a parent that cared enough and loved him and cared about his educational future. We did homeschool after that with local Homeschool Academy. He graduated with GED testing and firefighting admission degree. We are to parent and be alpha for our children no matter what. He has owned his successful for decades. All we needed was a hard working, kind member of society.

There are a lot of parents who are at their wit's end and do not believe in being physical with their children. There are also a number of parents who are afraid of their children. There is a type of domestic violence that became a big deal 10-15 years ago, when 1 kids essentially controls the whole family, or a specific parent. They will bully, intimidate, and physically attack their own parents. This 'parents want to be friends' line of blame isn't all that common in these court cases, from what I've seen. These are parents that need help, which is why they're in court.

Agreed .. as well as he was hitting a woman, too. He went above just being frustrated -- over something as ridiculous as his fast-food order -- and you wonder what he's like if something really serious happens. It's shameful when someone uses their age as an excuse for their bad behavior, and at his age, he should know even better. As I'm getting older, I get frustrated more, and my anxiety tops off much faster now .. but as I age, I want nothing more than having peace in my life, not causing more strife or using physical abuse to solve things. I think even the Judge got caught up in the poor-old-man scenario .. because if anyone else was standing before her, and they had smoked weed while on probation, they would have had to answer for it good. She is a very hard Judge when sentencing. She doesn't let much go. I was really quite surprised by the sentence she gave him.

My (step)grandson is a truancy case and my daughter is at her wits end with him. She finds it’s very hard to parent him because when he faces consequences he demands to go back to his mothers house 😅 the reason he lives with his father is because his mother wasn’t getting anywhere with him. Sad thing is, he’s a lovely kid but I think he struggles academically and tried to hide it behind a bad boy persona 😓
I might be old school but taking away the ability of parents to give a swift kick to the arse in these cases, has caused a generation of shmucks! With very soft behinds.

All of this! If parents received harsher consequences, they’d make sure those kids got up and went. My fiancé has a 15yr old son who is a raging devil. Fiancé has never disciplined him- he’s been more of a buddy than a father. This kid missed over 69 days last year and failed every class. They still passed him! Finally this school year, he missed so much they’ve put him on probation/truancy. And he CONTINUES to miss. My fiancé will get home from working overnights and instead of putting his ass in the truck and taking him to school he just says “oh well they will get him”… like no. Be the dad. Be in charge. I find is so disgusting when parents let kids call the shots. I don’t care if he’s 6ft tall- he’s 15. Take him to school.
But until they start to punish fiancé, he will continue to have a cavalier attitude. I hope for both of their sakes that they both get in trouble. It isn’t fair to the parents and kids who do make sure they’re in school everyday and doing the right thing!

The last couple generations are more concerned with being their child’s friend and not parenting. The last kid that didn’t show, I think I’d want the kid locked up in juvenile for a wake-up call. If I were her, and he’s refusing, I’d go away from him and call the police. Police intervention may be what he needs.
